#CNNBlackmail. The hashtag, which had been used an inordinate amount of times online, was quietly 'hidden' by the social media giant.
The tides of censorship continue to engulf speech.
Those following the ongoing backlash against CNN for going after a Reddit user over a meme, have likely noticed a fairly common hashtag (
#CNNBlackmail), being implemented by both mainstream media outlets as well as regular users. Twitter however, has decided to hide the hashtag, removing it from trends despite it being used on a massive scale.
Primarily centering around CNN's 'KFILE' staff, the hashtag aggregated numerous pieces of embarrassing information relating to the mainstream media outlet, becoming extremely popular in a very short period of time.
Despite the overwhelming usage, the hashtag does not appear in Worldwide trends, on Twitter. Nor does it appear on United States trends.
Mainstream media outlets have also used the hashtag in their article titles relating to these events, so traditionally, this should make the hashtag much more visible over time.
This isn't the only time Twitter has been caught engaging in censorship, as recently as late June of this year, the platform was sharply criticized in an op-ed at
Business Insider which marked further instances in a long history of clamping down on speech.
