Palm Oil Giant IOI And The Destruction Of Forests In Indonesia

Deforestation now reaching record levels in Indonesia despite government attempts to halt it

By Annisa Rahmawati

IOI – one of the largest palm oil companies in the world – is having a difficult time right now.

Sejahtera (IOI) oil palm concession
Not only has it recently lost its sustainability certification, but as a result its customers are leaving in droves. And with good reason: a new report from Greenpeace International shows how IOI’s operations have led to the destruction of forests and peatlands in Borneo, despite repeated promises to protect these areas.

Since the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) withdrew IOI’s sustainability certification in March, its share price has tanked and its credit rating has been placed under review

Most damning of all, every one of the major brands featured in our recent palm oil scorecard that was buying palm oil from IOI is in the process of cancelling their contracts.

The most recent of these is General Mills which, after receiving tens of thousands of emails from Greenpeace supporters, announced last week it will be phasing out its purchases from IOI. General Mills also stated that it won’t consider renewing its custom until the palm oil giant demonstrates real progress in protecting and restoring the areas it has damaged.

This aspect is key because IOI has made many commitments to good environmental management but has failed to carry them out on the ground.

The new report lists a string of broken promises, most notably a commitment in January 2014 to refrain from draining all areas of peat on its land. But there is clear evidence that since then canals have been dug to drain peat in PT Bumi Sawit Sejahtera (PT BSS), one of IOI’s concessions in West Kalimantan, part of Indonesian Borneo. Dry peat is extremely flammable, and it’s no surprise that large parts of this concession went up in smoke in both 2014 and 2015. The impacts of this drainage extend far beyond the boundaries of the PT BSS concession.

Surrounding areas also drain and dry out, making them more vulnerable to fire and subsidence as the peat collapses in upon itself. Yet IOI fails to recognise the damage being inflicted on the whole landscape.

IOI has also ignored efforts by the Indonesian government to prevent a repeat of last year’s devastating fires, including ministerial instructions to block drainage canals and refrain from planting oil palms in burnt areas. Field investigations in April revealed that in PT BSS, canals still flow freely and the green fronds of newly-planted palms wave above the scorched earth.

Deforestation in Papua

IOI is clearly concerned about loss of its RSPO certification and the customers it’s losing hemorrhaging as a result. It has even resorted to legal threats, launching a case against the RSPO itself, despite being a founding member with a seat on the board.

Earlier this week, it dropped the case raising the distinct possibility that it hopes to use today’s RSPO European Roundtable in Milan as an opportunity to lobby for its suspension to be lifted so it can woo back its customers.

IOI has produced a new action plan which it claims addresses the RSPO complaints. Yet it’s little different from existing policies and plans. It’s lacking on many levels, including: weak proposals for mapping peat and forest areas; no measurable goals or timelines; no plans for ending peat drainage and restoring drained areas; and no plans to publish maps of all its concessions.

Many of the customers IOI has lost are also insisting that if it wants their business again, IOI has to go beyond the comparatively weak standards of the RSPO. Given its track record, many are deeply suspicious of any new commitments or policies produced by IOI, so it needs to demonstrate it can put words into practice and make changes on the ground – blocking canals, restoring drained peatlands, and producing public maps of the forests and peatlands in its concessions.

Until that happens, the RSPO should keep IOI’s suspension in place and buyers should definitely beware of any claims IOI makes about its commitments to protect Indonesia’s forests.

British Security Company G4S Confirms That Florida Shooter Is One of Their Own

G4S did not have any choice in the matter as they were quickly exposed by independent media investigators despite CNN and MSM attempts to cover for them

The international security company G4S has confirmed that Omar Mateen, who slaughtered 50 people in the Pulse LGBT nightclub, was one of their employees.

“We are deeply shocked by this tragic event,” said the company's North America CEO John Kenning. “We can confirm that Omar Mateen had been employed by G4S since September 10th, 2007. Mateen was off-duty at the time of the incident. He was employed at a gated retirement community in South Florida.

“Mateen underwent company screening and background checks when he was recruited in 2007 and the check revealed nothing of concern. His screening was repeated in 2013 with no findings.

“We are cooperating fully with all law enforcement authorities, including the FBI, as they conduct their investigations. In 2013, we learned that Mateen had been questioned by the FBI but that the enquiries were subsequently closed. We were not made aware of any alleged connections between Mateen and terrorist activities, and were unaware of any further FBI investigations.

“Our thoughts and prayers remain with the victims of this unspeakable tragedy, and their friends and families.”

G4S claims expertise in vetting and screening employees: “A robust employee screening programme helps organisations minimise the risk of making inappropriate recruitment decisions,” G4S tells potential customers. “We have a wealth of experience in developing and implementing background checks and security clearance for companies in the private and public sector.”

G4S does bangup job of protecting Orlando

But time and again racist, misogynist and otherwise dangerous people have slipped through the company’s own screening process and been given power over vulnerable people. Repeatedly the company’s readiness to act in response to warnings has been found wanting.

Khanokporn Satjawat — Murdered By G4S Guard, November 2012

In November 2012 a 42 year-old pharmaceutical worker from Thailand took part in a conference about HIV treatment at Glasgow’s Clyde Auditorium. Her name was Khanokporn Satjawat

Khanokporn Satjawat
A G4S guard checked Satjawat’s ID. He didn’t like her manner. Later he followed her into the toilets and bludgeoned her to death with a fire extinguisher.

At the High Court in Glasgow in October 2013, Clive Carter was found guilty of Khanokporn Satjawat’s murder.

The court heard that the huge G4S guard (six foot five) tended to become enraged when women contradicted him.

In a police interview his wife described the 35 year-old as “violent and manipulative”. His GP had referred him for anger management counselling.

Khanokporn SatjawatA few days before the killing, Carter had knocked on a woman’s door at the Holiday Inn Express hotel, carrying a fire extinguisher and claiming there had been a report of a fire.

CNN fraud, corporate cover-up artist Chris Cuomo tries, fails to cover for G4S: "Hell, I didn't know..."

In response to my questions after the murder verdict, a G4S spokesperson said:

“Clive Carter passed screening in May 2010, following receipt of two employment references and two character references. He had a Security Industry Authority license and therefore went through Home Office screening including a criminal record check.”

The company went on:

“His instability only became apparent after the murder... The incident at the Holiday Inn was not reported to G4S and only came to our attention during the trial. Had we received any complaint concerning him at that time, we would have immediately launched an investigation and if necessary suspended him from duty whilst that investigation was underway.”

But G4S’s readiness to act in response to warnings of risk has repeatedly been found wanting.
Jimmy Mubenga unlawfully killed by G4S guards, October 2010.

Jimmy Mubenga
In July 2013 in London an inquest jury found that G4S guards had unlawfully killed Jimmy Mubenga during an attempted deportation in October 2010. Jimmy Mubenga was a healthy 46 year old and the father of five children.

After the killing, on a British Airways plane at London’s Heathrow airport, police checks on guards’ mobile phones revealed numerous racist texts that were extremely offensive

Assistant deputy coroner Karon Monaghan QC said that the quality and number of racist texts, and the fact that they were circulated widely among G4S guards, suggested not a couple of “rotten apples” but evidence of “a more pervasive racism within G4S”. [PDF here].

The Coroner wrote: “For example, one message read as follows: ‘fuck off and go home you free-loading, benefit grabbing, kid producing, violent, non-English speaking cock suckers and take those hairy faced, sandal wearing, bomb making, goat fucking, smelly rag head bastards with you.’”

The racist texts were withheld from jurors who found three G4S guards not guilty of manslaughter in December 2014.

G4S, among other UK government contractors, had for years been warned about the dangers of excessive force and guards’ racist abuse, most resoundingly in a dossier compiled by medics and lawyers entitled Outsourcing Abuse, published by the charity Medical Justice in July 2008, more than two years before the killing of Jimmy Mubenga.

G4S man Danny Fitzsimons Kills 2, August 2009

Another G4S employee approved by the company’s screening process was Danny Fitzsimons, a former paratrooper passed fit for work in Iraq while he was on bail for firearms offences and suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Ahead of Fitzsimons’s deployment in 2009, a fellow worker sent a series of emails warning G4S about the man’s instability.

“I am alarmed that he will shortly be allowed to handle a weapon and be exposed to members of the public,” wrote the whistleblower, signing one email “a concerned member of the public and father”.

Another email warned:

“Having made you aware of the issues regarding the violent criminal Danny Fitzsimons, it has been noted that you have not taken my advice and still choose to employ him in a position of trust. I have told you that he remains a threat and you have done nothing.”

Within 36 hours of arriving in Baghdad’s Green Zone in August 2009, Fitzsimons had shot and killed fellow security contractors Paul McGuigan and Darren Hoare.

In 2011 the Karkh Criminal Court of Iraq sentenced him to life in prison for the murders.

His parents said he was suffering from PTSD and should never have been employed in a war zone.

Clive Stafford Smith, director of the charity Reprieve, said:

“If G4S had done the proper checks and risk assessments when Danny applied to work with them, they would have quickly seen that he was suffering from serious PTSD, a consequence of loyally serving his country. Instead they conducted minimal checks and sent him off to Iraq. Now Danny could spend the rest of his life in a hostile prison hundreds of miles from home, when he should be receiving psychiatric treatment.”

Reporters at BBC Scotland who revealed the emailed warnings also discovered that the company had carried out two audits five months before the shooting which found shortcomings in its screening and vetting systems.

Gareth Myatt, 15, Dies “Under Restraint” By G4S guards, 2004

In 2004, a boy called Gareth Myatt was restrained to death by G4S guards at Rainsbrook child prison near Rugby, England. He was 15 years old, of mixed race, small for his age and weighed just 40kg.

Gareth Myatt
One of the guards involved in the restraint was six foot tall Dave Beadnall, who weighed 100kg. An inquest held in 2007 heard that when Gareth complained: “I can’t breathe”, Beadnall responded: “if you can talk then you can breathe.” When Gareth said he was going to defecate, he was told: “you are going to have to shit yourself”, and the restraint continued.

Gareth MyattThe inquest heard that one year before Gareth died, David Beadnall had been investigated for overuse of pain-inducing ‘distraction techniques’. Beadnall told the inquest he had no recollection of that.

G4S training documents listed guards’ nicknames. They included “Clubber”, “Crusher” and “Mauler”.

An inquest jury ruled that Gareth’s death was “accidental”.

After the inquest, the coroner, Judge Pollard wrote personally to then justice secretary Jack Straw to ensure that no other child should be harmed by improper restraint methods, and to highlight the remarkable failure of G4S’s management to act on reports of abuses. (The coroner refers to Rebound, the division of G4S responsible for Rainsbrook).

“Inadequacy in the monitoring of the use of Physical Control in Care at Rainsbrook by Rebound management caused or contributed to Gareth’s death,” wrote the coroner. “We also wish to record that there was a problem with the lack of response by Rebound to the information from Rainsbrook.”

G4S criminally responsible for Orlando attack

Three years ago I revealed that since Gareth’s death Dave Beadnall had been promoted and was working as health and safety manager for G4S children’s homes. A G4S spokeswoman told me: “His current role does not involve any direct contact with young people.”

Questions regarding the company’s culture and competence are frequent and grave.

In October 2013 the South African prison authorities took over management of the Mangaung maximum security prison run by G4S after the security company “lost control” of the prison. G4S strongly denied allegations that it had forcibly administered medication and electric shock treatment to Mangaung inmates.

In England this year Kent police have made 11 arrests in relation to abuse allegations after the BBC’s Panorama programme broadcast undercover footage of children at Medway Secure Training Centre being subjected to physical and emotional abuse by G4S guards.

WAYNE MADSEN: Austrian Election Mixes Old And New CIA Skullduggery

Obama's murdering CIA continues the spread of chaos and death unchecked

By Wayne Madsen

The recent Austrian presidential election, in which a pro-migrant and open European borders Green Party candidate defeated in a razor-thin vote a traditional Austrian nationalist, may have been influenced by old-fashioned CIA "Gladio" skullduggery with more modern "election engineering" tactics.

There had been an 11 point difference in pre-election polls showing right-wing and anti-European Union and anti-migrant Austrian Freedom Party candidate Norbert Hofer comfortably ahead of his presidential election run-off rival, Alexander van der Bellen, the Green Party candidate who was running as an independent.

The May 22 election was the closest in Austrian history and the outcome was based upon where election fraud always seems to occur: the counting of absentee ballots.

It was the absentee ballots that shot van der Bellen ahead of Hofer in capturing 50.3 percent to Hofer's 49.7 percent of the vote. Significant questions about George Soros-style election flipping have arisen in Austria. For example, one Austrian town had a 149.6 percent turnout. Soros-financed "civil society" groups claim to be upholding the principles of democracy, when, in fact, they train provocateurs and activists to upend elections, in addition to duly-elected governments. And many of Europe's Greens, people like van der Bellen, are mere pro-EU and pro-austerity spoilers for Soros and his global banking and investment colleagues.

However, something far more sinister than election malfeasance may have been at play in Austria before the presidential election run-off. At about 3:00 am on election morning, a shooting incident in the small Alpine town of Nenzing, not far from the Liechtenstein border, made national news. A local motorcycle gang called "The Lords" remained at an outdoor concert when a man, said to have gotten into an argument with his girlfriend, opened fire with 30 rounds on a crowd of about 150 people who were still at the concert. The shooter used a modified Yugoslavian Kalashnikov AKSMU, a semi-automatic assault pistol known as the Zastava M92. Two people were killed and 10 wounded before the shooter, identified by the police as 27-year old "Gregor S," turned the weapon on himself.

Zastava M92

The M70 assault weapons used in the deadly jihadist terrorist attacks in Paris, in which 130 people were killed, were also Zastavas. The Zastava M70 modified Kalashnikov AK-47s used in the attack were manufactured at the same state-owned Yugoslav factory in what is now Serbia. In the 1980s, today’s Zastava Arms Company was known as the "Zavodi Crvena Zastava" factory.

The infamous NATO "stay behind network" known widely as OPERATION GLADIO in Italy, Germany, Belgium, Turkey, and the Netherlands, but by other code phrases such as ABSALON in Denmark, PLAN BLEU in France, and SHEEPSKIN in Greece, cached away weapons in secret armories located throughout Europe that were to be used by stay-behind guerrillas and partisans kin the event of a Soviet invasion of Western Europe during the Cold War. GLADIO also extended to Europe. Originally, the stashed weapons were of Western manufacture.

By the late 1970s and 80s, GLADIO altered its weapons procurement criteria. In order to ratchet up Cold War tensions with the Communist-ruled countries, the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency began procuring weapons from countries like Poland, the Soviet Union, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Romania, Bulgaria, and Yugoslavia and storing them in GLADIO caches and armories. Various right-wing terrorist groups and "false flag" paramilitary units were permitted to obtain these Communist bloc weapons in order to carry out terrorist attacks that were then blamed by NATO governments on "leftist" groups like the Italian Red Brigade, the West German Red Army Faction, and the Belgian Communist Combatant Cells.

When the Eastern European-made weapons, particularly the ubiquitous Kalashnikov assault rifle and its various clones, were discovered by police, the blame was naturally cast by NATO and the CIA on the Warsaw Pact countries and Yugoslavia.

The fact that Zastava weapons from the 1980s were used the jihadist attack in Paris last November and the more recent reputed "neo-Nazi" attack in Austria, in addition to confirmation that a number of 1980s-vintage Zastava weapons have been found in the hands of CIA-supported jihadist rebel forces in Syria, points to CIA and other Western intelligence "false flag" operations not only in France and Austria but possibly in other countries. Modified Zastava assault weapons were also believed used in the January 2015 Paris attack on the office of the satirical magazine "Charlie Hebdo."

Western news media reported that the Zastava weapons likely originated in the weapons bazaar’s in the Balkans and were smuggled past pan-European Schengen security controls into Western Europe. This sort of news "meme" would be spoon-fed to the media in order to mask the use of GLADIO arms already cached inside the Schengen Zone.

One of the Zastava weapons that was used in the November terrorist attacks in Paris was traced to a Delray Beach, Florida firm called Century Arms. The Florida firm supplied weapons to the CIA-backed Nicaraguan contra guerrillas in the 1980s. During the 1980s, a number of Zastava rifles available on the CIA-connected black market found their way into the hands of the Irish Republican Army (IRA).

Some Austrian voters went to the polls on the morning of May 22 with the belief that the Nenzing assailant, a member of the neo-Nazi motorcycle gang "Blood and Honor," was in some way connected with presidential candidate Hofer. After he participated in a 2005 attack on a punk rock concert, Gregor S. was prohibited from carrying any weapon. Gregor S. was also declared a psychotic by state medical authorities. Gregor S. faded from the public view -- until election morning in Austria.

After the shooting, police "conveniently" discovered neo-Nazi literature, as well as grenades and standard military ammunition, in Gregor S's home. Where did the shooter, barred from owning any weapon, get the gun and ammunition?

The Nenzing shooting had all the signs of a Gladio-style false flag operation. Although Gladio was a CIA/NATO Cold War creation -- a program to leave weapons and ammunition scattered throughout Western Europe for the use by paramilitary "stay behind" personnel to engage in sabotage against a Soviet invasion force -- elements of the network are very much alive today. If there was a Western psychological warfare operation designed to plant the seed in the minds of Austrian voters of a link between the Nenzing shooting and the right-wing Hofer certainly paid off. Van der Bellen made up 11 points in pre-election opinion polls to narrowly defeat Hofer in a razor-thin election. Austrian supporters of Hofer certainly have a good case when it comes to questioning the validity of the presidential election.

Austrian Freedom Party leader Heinz Christian Strache has filed a legal challenge to the outcome of the election. Strache cited "irregularities" with postal absentee ballots that may have affected as many as 570,000 votes. With over a half million dubious votes being counted, the Freedom Party has a valid case. Strache said it is clear that Hofer would have been comfortably elected president without the questionable votes being counted in favor of van der Bellen, the stooge for George Soros and his gang of "open borders for additional migrants" advocates. The Austrian election may have seen the future strategy in Europe in tamping down the national sovereigntists: an injection of high-tech election tampering with the sudden shock of a GLADIO-era "false flag" terrorist attack. In any event, it is a recipe for disaster.

We have already discussed in the first part of this analysis how the American geography dooms whoever controls the territory to being a global power, but there are a number of other outcomes that shape what that power will be like. The first and most critical is the impact of that geography on the American mindset.
