From Iraq To The Brexit Referendum: Tony Blair’s Toxic Legacy

The Hague War Crimes Tribunal awaits Blair, Bush, Cheney and the rest of the Iraq and Afghan war criminals

STRATEGIC CULTURE FOUNDATION

Anthony Charles Lynton Blair currently back in Britain, cast a dark shadow over those campaigning to stay in the European Union in the 23rd June referendum.

Bush attempts to sanitise fellow war criminal
Blair with phoney "peace medal"
Inflicting himself on the Britain Stronger in Europe group, he spoke at every opportunity – reminding even the most passionate Europhile of the last time he assured: “I know I’m right” – Iraq.

If the “Remainers” had an ounce of sense Blair should have been ditched in a nano-second. He is not “Toxic Tony” for nothing.

However, since the long awaited Chilcot Inquiry in to the Iraq invasion is to be published just thirteen days after the referendum (6th July) it is worth revisiting more of the mistruths of which he is capable.

On 18th March 2003, Blair stood in Parliament and listed the times Saddam Hussein’s government had said they had no weapons of mass destruction (1) dismissing them all, including the 11,800 pages or 12,200 pages of accounting of that which they did not possess and delivered by the Iraqi delegation at the UN to the UN UNSCOM offices on 8th December 2002.

Lest it be forgotten, the reason for the uncertainty of the length of the volume is that the US delegation simply appropriated it and returned less than 4,000 pages so heavily redacted as to be indecipherable – and without the hefty index at the back listing the Western arms companies who had, prior to the first Gulf war, sold them weapons.

Colin Powell during his infamous UN Iraq WMD speech

Blair told Parliament loftily:

“… the 8th December declaration is false. That in itself is a material breach. Iraq has made some concessions to co-operation but no-one disputes it is not fully cooperating. Iraq continues to deny it has any WMD, though no serious intelligence service anywhere in the world believes them … We … will back it with action if Saddam fails to disarm voluntarily.”

Iraq of course, was telling the truth. Blair had appointed himself Judge, jury and executioner.

And here is a real whopper: “I have never put our justification for action as regime change.”

This Iraqi child did not die from lack of food and medicine
And another: “Iraq is a wealthy country that in 1978, the year before Saddam seized power, was richer than Portugal or Malaysia. Today it is impoverished, 60% of its population dependent on food aid. Thousands of children die needlessly every year from lack of food and medicine.”

What he omitted was stated in a piece I wrote back in 1998 (2) addressing the ever repeated propaganda. The conditions were caused directly by the US-UK driven embargo, overseen by Blair’s envoy to the UN, Carne Ross, who headed the Sanctions Committee after the August 1991 imposed embargo:

“In 1989 the World Health Organization recorded Iraq as having 92-per-cent access to clean water, 93-per-cent access to high quality health care and with high educational and nutritional standards.

“By 1995 the World Food Program noted that: ‘time is running out for the children of Iraq’. Figures – verified by UNICEF – record that 1,211,285 children died of embargo-related causes between August 1990 and August 1997. A silent holocaust in the name of the UN. These numbers are similar to those lost in Pol Pot’s genocide in Cambodia. It is three times the population of Kuwait in small lives.”

War criminals Bush and Blair actually believe they will avoid trial at The Hague

‘ “After 24 years in the field, starting with Biafra, I didn’t think anything could shock me,” wrote Dieter Hannusch of the World Food Program in l995. “But this was comparable to the worst scenarios I had ever seen.” ‘

The day after Blair’s address to Parliament, Operation Iraqi Liberation began, to which he had committed the country in his visit to George W. Bush’s Texas ranch in April 2002, without telling Parliament.

Moreover, in 2009 The Mail on Sunday disclosed (3) that: “Attorney General Lord Goldsmith wrote (a) letter to Mr. Blair in July 2002 – a full eight months before the war – telling him that deposing Saddam Hussein was a blatant breach of international law.

“It was intended to make Mr. Blair call off the invasion, but he ignored it. Instead, a panicking Mr. Blair issued instructions to gag Lord Goldsmith, banned him from attending Cabinet meetings and ordered a cover-up to stop the public finding out.

“He even concealed the bombshell information from his own Cabinet, fearing it would spark an anti-war revolt. The only people he told were a handful of cronies who were sworn to secrecy.

“Lord Goldsmith was so furious at his treatment he threatened to resign – and lost three stone as Mr Blair and his cronies bullied him into backing down.”

The then Prime Minister did not alone ignore the Attorney General’s legal advice. In November 2002 “six wise men” gave Blair “bloody warnings” as to the outcome of an attack on Iraq. (4) They were: “ … all academics, expert on Iraq, the Middle East and international affairs. They had been called to the Cabinet Room to outline the worst that could happen if Britain and the United States launched an invasion.

“This was a meeting that could have changed the course of history and, with better planning for the aftermath, saved countless lives – if only the Prime Minister and his advisers had listened and acted on the bloody warnings on that day in November 2002.”

Dr. Toby Dodge, then of London’s Queen Mary University foresaw with extraordinary clarity the near certain outcome, warning: ‘… that Iraqis would fight for their country against the invaders rather than just celebrate the fall of their leader. A long and nasty civil war could follow. “My aim that day was to tell them as much as I could, so that there would be no excuses and nobody saying, ‘I didn’t know.’ ”

Others who shared their extensive expertise were Professor George Joffe of Cambridge University, Sir Lawrence Freedman, Professor of War Studies at King’s College, London and a Blair adviser, Professor Charles Tripp of the School of Oriental and Asian Studies, Steven Simon, Director of the International Institute for Strategic Studies, and Professor Michael Clarke, then of Kings College, London. Before the gathering they were warned: “Don’t tell him not to do it. He has already made up his mind," Dr. Dodge told The Independent.

Blair and his Cabinet had: “…no plan for what would happen after the invasion. The approach was, ‘The Americans are heading this up. They will have a detailed plan. We need to follow them’ ”, said Professor Joffe. However in reality, a year’s planning by the State Department for the invasion’s aftermath: “was junked. They were making up policy on the hoof.” Professor Joffe also explained the complexities of Iraq’s power structures with Tony Blair seemingly disinterested in the potential cultural, societal and political minefields, responding with kindergarten simplicity (re Saddam Hussein) “ But the man is evil isn’t he?”

A chameleon-like absorption of George W. Bush, his political circle and his Generals’ simplistic “good guys”, “bad guys” rhetoric.

Steven Simon had little faith in bringing democracy to Iraq at the barrels of guns and deliveries of 30,000-pound bunker busters: “If everything had been done differently, there might have been some small shot at avoiding disaster. But only a small shot.”

Incredibly, according to Professor Joffe: “The people who were put in charge in Iraq had very little knowledge or experience of the Middle East.”

Professor Clarke commented that Blair’s attempt to justify the invasion was mistaken: “We knew there was no nuclear stuff in Iraq.” Moreover, he believed: ‘Blair did not actually decide to go to war on the basis of intelligence, but made it look as if he had with his two “dodgy” dossiers. “He presented the case to the public as if they had incontrovertible evidence that Saddam had weapons of mass destruction. That was rubbish. They were ridiculous documents, both those documents.” ‘ (Emphasis added.)

Late last year, Blair made what was described as a “qualified apology” for “mistakes” made in Iraq – among them: “our mistake in our understanding of what would happen once you removed the regime”. In the light of the above, blatantly untrue.

Blair’s dodging and weaving over the years since 2003 – in spite of his millions, numerous properties, jet (seemingly leased) and a yacht, accrued from advising some of the world’s most despotic leaders – seems to have worn him down a bit, though.

In an extraordinary television outburst (5) attacking Labour Leader, Jeremy Corbyn who said of Blair on BBC’s Newsnight last August:

“If he has committed a war crime, yes (he should stand trial.) Everybody who has committed a war crime should.” Blair responded: “I’m accused of being a war criminal for removing Saddam Hussein… and yet Jeremy is seen as a progressive icon as we stand by and watch the people of Syria barrel-bombed, beaten and starved into submission and do nothing.”

No mention of the US’ illegal “coalition” which includes the UK which has made 4,024 strikes to 1st June this year, according to the US Department of Defence. Strikes remarkably inept at affecting the countless foreign terrorist groups, but which have caused devastation to the Syrian people whose plight was caused by US plotting (6.)

46,615 bombs and missiles have been dropped Syria and Iraq in the seeming non-fight against ISIS and other criminal groups. (airwars.org)

Apart from his ongoing economy with the truth, Tony Blair also seems to be well past his sell by date. In Northern Ireland, probably the only place on earth which has a tenuous reason to give him some credit for the “peace process”, where he went to speak on the referendum at Ulster University, he was less than welcome.

Derry anti-war campaigner Frankie McMenamin said the former Labour leader was “not welcome” in Derry, telling the Derry Journal:

“I was involved in protests about the Iraqi War which Tony Blair was responsible for, Tony Blair is hated throughout the world and he has blood on his hands over Iraq.

“I will be voting for the U.K. to remain on June 23rd but I think someone like Mr. Blair (urging the stay in vote) will put a lot of other people off.

“Tony Blair is not welcome in our city and the people who organized this visit obviously knew this” – the meeting had not been publicly advertised and the address was to a specially selected audience. The co-speaker was Blair’s former Chancellor, Gordon Brown, near equally unpopular, who wrote the cheques for years of UK bombings before the invasion and then for the invasion’s destruction. Had the meeting been publicly advertised, assured Mr McMenamin, protesters would have been out in force.

On 17th June, Blair was a signatory to an open letter, signed by two former deputy Prime Ministers and a number of MPs and public figures urging voters to stay in the European Union. It included the words:

“…public life, whether in politics or elsewhere, should be about something else – something better.

“It should be driven by a desire to bring people together when it would be easier to tear them apart. A wish to build bridges rather than erect walls.” To promote that which is “Peaceful, tolerant, compassionate.”

As he added his signature, did he reflect on Iraq’s destroyed bridges – literally and metaphorically, on a nation of walls erected by US and UK troops over one of the most open landscapes anywhere to be found and on the accompanying destruction of peace, tolerance and compassion at the hands of US and UK policies aided by his ignorant determination and “ridiculous documents.”

Philippe Sands QC, Professor of international law and Director of the Centre on International Courts and Tribunals at University College London, has said (7) ‘he believes, unequivocally, that the 2003 invasion was illegal under international law. “In the UK, beyond those associated with the government’s effort, I cannot think of a single international lawyer who thinks the war was lawful. Not a single name comes to mind. That’s got to be telling.” ‘

It can only be hoped the Chilcot Inquiry’s findings deliver Charles Anthony Lynton Blair and his cohorts in a tragedy which will be his and George W. Bush’s place in history. A sharp and chilly return to reality.

Indonesian Lawmakers Seek Seizure Of Unapproved Vaccines

Evil abides in counterfeiting drugs; may the demons that perpetrated these crimes Terbakar di Neraka

Police smashed a criminal syndicate last week accused of selling fake vaccines for more than a decade to health clinics across Indonesia, a vast archipelago of 255 million people.

Sixteen people, including a married couple believed to have masterminded the scheme, have been arrested over their alleged involvement. They are accused of distributing fake boosters for diseases including tuberculosis, hepatitis B and tetanus. “Based on the culprits’ confessions, the fake vaccines have been distributed across Indonesia since 2003,” Agung Setya of the Indonesian police told local media. Two of the suspects reportedly said they distributed fake vaccines to hospitals and community health centers. The case has caused nationwide concern and condemnation, with Indonesian President Joko Widodo demanding the harshest punishment possible for this "extraordinary crime."

Indonesian lawmakers on Monday urged authorities to seize from hospitals and health clinics all vaccines made by unapproved manufacturers, after police exposed a syndicate selling fake child vaccines for more than a decade.

In a country where counterfeit drugs are widespread, the case deals a blow to government health regulators whom many believed to have kept a tight leash on the distribution of vaccines.

Authorities have shut some private health facilities after police smashed a drug-making ring last week that sold fake and potentially harmful booster vaccines for measles, hepatitis B and other viruses in Jakarta and the island of Java. Police launched investigations this year following reports of several children becoming ill after vaccinations.

"This is definitely an emergency," Dede Yusuf, chief of a parliamentary panel on health issues, told reporters before a hearing with government health officials. We don't know what the effect of this medication is. And if it has been going on since 2003 as reported, what is the status of the children who have received it? We want to know the answers."

Health Minister Nila Djoewita Moeloek sought to reassure parents that nearly all vaccines were from government-approved manufacturers, adding that she had received no reports of illnesses related to fake vaccinations.

"The Ministry of Health ensures that the vaccines circulated in the health service units are safe and are not harmful," the ministry said in a statement.

It is alleged that the circulation of the fake vaccines are not more than 1 percent in Jakarta, Banten and West Java.

Parents could have their children re-vaccinated if they are suspected to have received the fake drugs, the minister added.

"We are working with the national food and drugs agency to collect data and take all measures necessary," health ministry spokesman Oscar Primadi told AFP.

"If vaccinations need to be redone then we will do it, it's not impossible."

The Indonesian Pediatric Association said parents unsure if their child could be affected should ask their hospital or health clinic about the origin of their vaccines.

The scandal was brought to light after a major pharmaceutical company alerted Indonesian authorities that some of its products had been counterfeited. Police uncovered the syndicate after a pharmacist in Bekasi, near Jakarta, was arrested in May for selling medicine without a license. The drugs turned out to be fake and led to the arrest of 14 distributors and makers of the fake vaccines, whose ingredients included the antibiotic gentamicin and saline.

ANDREW KREIG: Two Potential Democratic VP Nominees Come Out Swinging

VP potential nominees for both candidates make themselves known

Secretary of Labor Thomas Perez and Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey delivered hard-hitting speeches at the National Press Club last week that showed why each is regarded as a top option as the Democratic vice presidential nominee.

Perez, born in Buffalo, NY and shown in our photo at right, described how his family’s immigrant roots in the Dominican Republic helps inspire his implementation of the Obama administration’s policies, including a presidential order enabling estimated 4.2 million workers to qualify for overtime.

Booker, shown below in a file photo, spoke on “The Search for Equal Justice.”

He was reared in a prosperous New Jersey suburb that his parents desegregated, and after a stint as mayor of the 95 percent minority nearby city of Newark won election to the U.S. senate in 2013.

Each spoke on June 22 at the press club, which is located in downtown Washington, DC. This editor attended both talks as part of our ongoing understanding of the 2016 election campaign and other national issues. We focus both on mainstream and little-reported issues in the contest between prospective Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton and Republican Donald Trump.

The Labor Secretary's talk was entitled, Building the Best America, with quotations below from the prepared text, which closely paralleled his talk as delivered.

“A few weeks ago,” Perez began, “the New York Times asked, “When did optimism become uncool?” I must confess that – as a chronic, relentless optimist – I took it a little personally. I know my teenage kids think I’m uncool. I get that.

"But the Times hit on something darker within our politics – the fact that some politicians find it expedient to exploit people’s worst fears… to accentuate the negative and eliminate the positive… to turn people against each other instead of toward each other."

A New Intervention In Libya

Pentagon, DOD, CIA now evacuating remnants of their decimated Syrian ISIS thugs to Libya in order to justify new invasion, continue bogus "war on terror"

STRATEGIC CULTURE FOUNDATION

Something very unusual happened last spring at the White House: the president of the United States admitted that America’s 2011 incursion into Libya, which led to the overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi, had been a mistake.

The now very dead Ghaddafi with his "friend"
Obama
And yet the US decision to intervene in Libya had certainly not been a spontaneous or hasty move. It was carefully thought out and intended to achieve at least two goals.

First of all, the aggression against Libya was supposed to halt the successful economic expansion of Libyan Jamahiriya in Africa. That expansion threatened to undermine the dominance of the old colonial powers – Great Britain and France. For this reason, America’s NATO allies in Europe took the lead in the armed intervention.

Second, Western financiers were reacting with overt displeasure at the prospect of Libya introducing its gold dinar. Since there was a good chance that the countries of the African Union might also adopt that currency, the gold dinar could have undermined the dollar’s position and caused considerable damage to the international usury of capital.

After destroying the existing political apparatus in Libya, the US and its European allies gave little thought to what would come along to replace it. In a country with a tribal social structure, the overthrow of a stable authoritarian regime that had been the glue holding the Libyan people together naturally led to a clash between the various tribes and clans – to a "war of all against all" – and that environment immediately raised the stakes for the Islamist radicals.

There are about 1,700 armed groups active in Libya today that divvy up the power in this Arab country.

On June 11, it was announced that the Libyan port of Sirte and its oil terminal had been liberated from Islamic State (IS) militants. It is significant, however, that the liberators were militants from the Misrata clan, who are no less radical than IS. It was rebels from Misrata, along with members of the Benghazi clans, who spearheaded the new Libyan "revolution" in 2011. At that time, clans from Cyrenaica and Misrata were seen as proxies for Qatar. Doha, which was eager to dominate post-Gaddafi Libya, bet most of its chips on them. However, once chaos erupted, it was clear that when it came to oil, everyone wanted a piece of the pie but there was not enough to go around. Thus the clans splintered.

Abdelhakim Belhaj, the governor of Tripoli and a former leader of the local al-Qaeda affiliate, offers a vivid example. In 2011, he served among the ranks of the rebels as the chief agent for Qatar’s policies in Libya. But when he did not receive his expected remuneration from Qatar, Belhaj at first refocused his efforts in the direction of South Africa’s leaders, and now maintains a very close relationship with the Algerian intelligence services. He exchanged the camouflage of a field commander for a three-piece suit and became a respectable businessman.

Abdelhakim Belhaj now owns Libya’s biggest airline, as well as insurance agencies and import-export firms in Libya, Tunisia, Sudan, and Turkey. Belhaj currently has his sights set on gaining control of Libya’s National Oil Company, the Central Bank, and the Libyan Investment Authority. The latter is interesting because it holds the legal right to Gaddafi’s frozen assets in the West. Because of the current chaos in Libya, the US and EU are refusing to allow the Libyans access to those funds. It is not difficult to imagine what sort of battles might still erupt there over the possession of that money.

Disappointed with the opportunities for an alliance with the tribal sheiks, in the end the Qataris placed their Libyan bets on the Islamic State. But Libya is not Iraq. In Iraq, the popularity of IS among the Sunni community was boosted by the presence of a common enemy – the Shiites. But there is no such enemy in Libya, and inter-tribal conflicts are much stronger there, so Daesh divisions have been unable to hold much territory.

Today the situation in Libya is increasingly dictated by the escalation of foreign intervention. During the battle for Sirte, British special forces were working right alongside militants from the Misrata clan. There are also foreigners within the armed divisions under General Khalifa Haftar, the biggest rival to the fighters from Misrata. In early June French special forces took part in General Haftar’s triumphant assault on Benghazi.

That general, who commands the army loyal to the House of Representatives headquartered in Tobruk, also enjoys the support of Egypt and the United Arab Emirates – plus Saudi Arabia backed him until recently. As a reminder, there are two governments and two parliaments operating in Libya: the House of Representatives in Tobruk and the General National Congress in Tripoli, which is made up of Islamists. In December of last year their leaders reluctantly agreed, under pressure, to form the Government of National Accord.

The situation is now changing. The Saudis have begun to actively work with the field commanders from Tripoli and Misrata, winning them over with financial inducements and thus weakening Qatar’s position. One could cite the examples of Ibrahim al-Jathran, the leader of a Zuwaya tribal militia, and also Ismail al-Sallabi, the field commander of the Martyrs Brigade and brother of Ali al-Sallabi, the spiritual advisor to the local affiliate of the Muslim Brotherhood. These actions are being taken under the guise of support of the Government of National Accord of Fayez al-Sarraj, which is headquartered in Tripoli.

There are some very compelling hypotheses about why Egypt, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia on one hand, vs. the Western powers on the other, are pursuing different objectives in Libya. The Saudis are eager to establish a viable government in the country that would force Libya’s economy and politics under Riyadh’s control. But Britain and France would not be against a new colonial partition of that nation. Prior to independence, Libya was a conglomerate of provinces, with Cyrenaica under British control, Tripolitania – under the Italians, and Fezzan – under the French. Even now there is no guarantee that the same blueprint for partitioning Libya won’t reemerge.
