WAYNE MADSEN : Obama’s New (Old) Iraq War

Obama determined to spark WWIII

By Wayne Madsen

President Obama has announced he wants new Congressional authorization to commit U.S. troops to ground combat in Iraq but wants the role of such troops limited. Mr. Obama wants to scrap a 2002 congressional authorization for then-President George W. Bush to use military force in Iraq but leave in place a more-encompassing 2001 post-9/11 authorization for the use of military force (AUMF) that Obama has used to carry out drone strikes in Yemen, Somalia, and elsewhere. Far from retreating militarily in the Middle East, Mr. Obama’s troop limiting measure in his proposed replacement for the 2002 AUMF appears little more than window-dressing to assuage critics of further U.S. military involvement in the Middle East.

Obama’s request for his own AUMF is the first during his presidency. Some lawmakers fear that any such authorization could be misused by Obama’s successor, whether he or she be a Republican or Democrat. After all, Obama saw no reason to avoid using the two war authorizations granted to George W. Bush, so the legislators reason, why would Obama’s successor feel under any constraints not to use Obama’s own open-ended war authorization from Congress?

The U.S. president seeks to use necessary and appropriate military force against the Islamic State or "associated persons or forces." What constitutes "associated persons or forces" is a "catch all phrase" that has some members of Congress concerned. However, the new proposed AUMF would not authorize any "enduring offensive ground combat operations."

The AUMF does permit military rescue operations, targeted attacks on Islamic State leadership, the "enabling" of airstrikes from military ground spotters and targeters, and the provision of military advice and assistance to "partner forces." It was such assistance to "partner forces" by the United States in the Libyan and Syrian civil wars that gave rise to the Islamic States who now claim to govern large portions of both countries.

Those members of Congress opposed to greater U.S. military involvement in Iraq and Syria are outnumbered by those, mainly Republicans, who want more U.S. "boots on the ground" to attack Islamic State for Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) forces in Iraq and Syria. ISIL reportedly occupies a third of the territory of each of those nations. Calls for greater U.S. involvement have grown since ISIL’s reported burning alive of a Jordanian pilot and the death of Kayla Mueller, a U.S. aid worker taken hostage by ISIL.

What Obama is not asking authorization for is something he has been doing for quite some time: introducing clandestine Central Intelligence Agency operatives and U.S.-financed guerrilla forces into the combat zones of Syria and Iraq. The Obama policy of covert assistance to so-called "moderates" in the Syrian opposition, as well as secretive assistance to Kurdish peshmerga forces in northern Iraq was masked by the king of U.S. clandestine activity, CIA director John O. Brennan.

Obama’s secret wars in Syria and Iraq are matched by his current covert military and intelligence support for Ukraine’s regular army and its irregular battalions. Obama constantly understates U.S. military involvement in battle zones like Ukraine, Iraq, and Syria and overstates his reticence over greater U.S. military involvement in the conflicts. The sad truth is that the conflicts in Syria and Ukraine are all of Mr. Obama’s making. These wars of choice were crafted by neo-conservative Bush holdover operatives like Assistant Secretary of State for European Affairs Victoria Nuland and former State Department top Near East diplomat and now UN Deputy Secretary General for Political Affairs Jeffrey Feltman.

The United States is now prepared to extend its military stays in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Obama administration has announced plans to maintain over 5500 U.S. troops in Afghanistan after the previously-announced withdrawal date of the end of 2015. Plans are afoot to maintain U.S. bases at Kandahar airport and other locations. Obama is expected to convey his wishes to a more-than-receptive Afghan President, Ashraf Ghani, when he visits the White House in March.

Plans are also underway for the U.S. to establish a major airbase near Erbil, in Iraqi Kurdistan. The base will be used to conduct anti-ISIL surveillance and bombing missions in Iraq and Syria as well as facilitate similar operations by allied countries. There is no information as to whether the base will continue in operation if ISIL is soundly defeated.

There is a clear neo-conservative playbook being enacted by the Pentagon from Ukraine, where incoming U.S. Defense Secretary Ashton Carter wants to send U.S. "defensive" weapons to Kiev in order that they may engage Russian-speaking and ethnic Russian federalists in the eastern part of the country, to Iraq and Afghanistan. The United States has no desire to disengage from what amounts to the restoral of the old Cold War-era "Central Treaty Organisation" or CENTO. CENTO, originally called the "Baghdad Pact," was composed of Britain, Pakistan, Iran, Iraq, and Turkey, with the United States forced to be an "associate member" due to the opposition to American involvement from the Israel Lobby. CENTO was aimed at the then-Soviet Union. CENTO, like the Southeast Asia Treaty Organization (SEATO), became defunct with the recognition of new global realities. Today, the new "CENTO" can be said to include Iraq, Afghanistan, Turkey, Ukraine, Georgia, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and the Gulf states. But like the original CENTO, Obama’s "coalition" against ISIL includes some of the very countries that have been helping to aid and abet Islamist terrorists and guerillas.

For example, in November 2014, it was reported that a Russian "federalist" sniper shot and killed in Ukraine the so-called British "White Widow," aka Samantha Lewthwaite, while she was fighting against Russian-speaking forces in eastern Ukraine. The presence of the ground commander for the Islamist attack on a Nairobi shopping mall in Ukraine served as the best evidence to date of Islamic State collusion with the Kiev government. Lewthwaite was serving as a sniper with the Aidar Battalion, which receives support from Kolomoisky, the billionaire Ukrainian-Israeli dual national governor of Dnipropetrovsk. Kolomoisky provides money and logistical support to several pro-Kiev paramilitary units. They include, in addition to the Aidar Battalion, "Blue Helmet" ex-Israeli Defense Force commandos, the Azov Battalion, the Donbass Battalion, and the 2,000-strong Dniepr-1 (or Dnipro-1) Battalion. A number of neo-Nazi Ukrainian nationalists from the west of the country serve with the battalions in the east.

The "Obama Doctrine" for the Eurasian arc that extends from Turkey and Ukraine in the west to Afghanistan and Pakistan in the east appears fraught with contradictions and the mismanagement of neo-cons like Nuland, who also has responsibility for Eurasian affairs. The U.S. includes Turkey in its calculus for fighting ISIL, even though the Turkish government has supplied ISIL units fighting against the Bashar al Assad government in Damascus. Saudi Arabia, a nation with documented links to ISIL and Al Qaeda, is also a member of Obama’s polyglot coalition. The U.S. includes Afghanistan in its sphere of influence even though coalition member Qatar maintains close relations with the Afghan Taliban, which has declared war on the U.S. military presence in Afghanistan.

Obama’s proposed AUMF also risks authorizing further U.S. involvement in what amounts to civil wars in Yemen and Somalia. Only uninformed Republican rhetoric refers to monolithic "threats" from Islam. What is occurring in Yemen is far from an Islamist uprising, it is about the restoration of rights for the minority Zaidi Shi’as in a country long-dominated by the Sunnis, as well as the restoration of the independence of South Yemen. Both are opposed by the neocons who want any excuse to see Yemen under a pro-U.S. regime that permits American military bases at such ports as Aden, Hodeida, and the strategic island of Socotra. The Somali wars have more to do with conflicts between a weak federal transitional government in Mogadishu and independent governments in Somaliland and Puntland than in any menace from Islamists, whether they are called Al Shabaab or the Islamic State.

Once again, an American administration is seeking to spread the U.S. military very far and wide without a well stream of popular support. It is a scheme doomed to failure.

Litvinenko Killers Left Radiation Trail Across London, Inquiry Told

Polonium used as weapon to terrorise whistleblowers whereas a gunshot to the head would have been far easier and more efficient

By Luke Harding

The two Russians who allegedly poisoned Alexander Litvinenko left a massive trail of radiation in “multiple locations” across London, and were immediately noticeable because of their ex “excessive” jewellery and “comical” dress sense, the inquiry into his murder has heard.

Andrei Lugovoi and Dmitry Kovtun flew from Moscow to London on 16 October 2006. They checked into the Best Western hotel on Shaftesbury Avenue, the inquiry heard. They are accused of trying to poison Litvinenko for the first time later that day – and of succeeding two weeks later when they slipped radioactive polonium into his tea.

Giving evidence, the hotel’s manager, Goran Krgo, said he spotted Lugovoi and Kovtun the moment they arrived. “I remember these guests quite vividly,” he told the inquiry on Wednesday.

Asked to elaborate, he said: “We found them to be quite comical on account of how they were dressed and the excessive jewellery they were wearing.”

Krgo said he advised the two men to go to a nearby cafe since their rooms weren’t ready. They came back and checked in, reappearing in the lobby half an hour later, having swapped casual clothes for business gear.

“Kovtun was wearing a silver polyester suit and Lugovoi a dark grey check. They had colourful ties. We were laughing. The girl working behind the desk was amused and making comments.”

Krgo added: “The colours didn’t match. The suits were either too big or too small. They didn’t look like people used to wearing suits. They looked more like a donkey with a saddle.”

Det. Insp Craig Mascall of the Metropolitan police said forensic experts later found large quantities of polonium in both Lugovoi and Kovtun’s hotel rooms. In Lugovoi’s room, 107, the highest reading came from the bathroom plughole, leading to the suspicion he may have thrown the polonium away. Polonium was also found in Kovtun’s room, 308, on a chair and coat-hanger.

Later that afternoon, the pair met Litvinenko in the fourth-floor boardroom of Erinys, an oil and gas exploration company, in Mayfair.

Experts found “substantial contamination” here too, on chairs and a green fabric cover. On one corner of the table there was “full scale deflection” – an off-the-scale reading of alpha radiation.

The inquiry was told that there was no indication Litvinenko had been contaminated before his meeting with Lugovoi and Kovtun. The three men went for a meal at the Itsu sushi bar in Piccadilly, where polonium was also detected. Litvinenko threw up once that evening but survived this first botched assassination attempt, the inquiry heard.

More polonium was found in Pescatori, an Italian restaurant where Lugovoi and Kovtun ate that evening, clocking up a bill of £214.20. They had dinner with Alexander Shadrin, a Russian emigre.

They rounded off the night with a visit to Dar Marrakesh, a Moroccan restaurant. Polonium even turned up on the shisha pipe which Lugovoi smoked on its terrace.

Bozo assassins Andrei Lugovoi and Dmitry Kovtun

Call records showed that hours after trying to murder Litvinenko Lugovoi called “female A”, a woman whom he had “met informally” during one of numerous trips in 2006 to London. “Female A” declined to see him, Mascall said.

The following morning, Lugovoi and Kovtun left their hotel a day early and checked into the Parkes Hotel in Knightsbridge. Polonium was found in their new rooms.

The inquiry also heard that the Russian authorities deliberately blocked an attempt by British experts to examine the two aircraft used by Lugovoi and Kovtun to fly to and from London on 16 and 18 October 2006. The pair flew with the Russian carrier Transaero. Russia’s public health minister, Gennady Onischenko, assured the British embassy in Moscow that no radiation contamination was found on either plane.

Experts, however, managed to test the second London-Moscow plane at Heathrow airport. They discovered polonium traces on the seats – 26E and 26F – where Kovtun and Luovoi had been sitting. The Russian authorities then cancelled a scheduled flight to London of the other plane. It has since never come back to UK airspace.

A photograph taken by UK border police was released to the inquiry, showing Lugovoi and Kovtun arriving at Gatwick airport on 16 October.

Giving evidence, Det Con Spencer Scott said he stopped both men at immigration control. He said: “I thought they were of interest.”

He questioned them for 20 minutes. “They were very evasive as to why they were going to the UK,” he said, adding they “gave one-word answers”.

Scott said he let them enter the country after confirming that their business meeting was genuine. “I was given advice I should allow them to go through,” he said.

Pentagon Prepping Forces To Assist Ukraine’s National Guard

Already stretched to the limit by multiple deployments in Obama's bogus "war on terror" and the back-door draft of "Stop Loss," U.S. military personnel are now used once more in illegal, insane Pentagon attempt to spark WWIII

By Maggie Ybarra

The Pentagon is preparing to send troops to Ukraine to train its nascent national guard on how to operate as a professional security force in the face of escalating violence in the eastern part of the country.

U.S. troops will begin training about 600 Ukrainian guards in western Ukraine next month, military officials said. The international coaching lesson comes just as President Obama said Monday at a meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel that he’d consider providing lethal weapons to the struggling military as a last resort if diplomacy fails. The Pentagon devised its military-to-military training plan to address what Ukraine sees as a gap in its internal defense operations, said U.S. European Command spokeswoman Lt. Cmdr. Alana Garas.

But some analysts see the personnel investment as a quick-fix approach aimed more at satisfying a Congress urging more U.S. support in the Ukraine than a real solution to Ukraine's military issues.

"They need to check the ‘We’re training Ukraine's military‘ box,” said Michael Kofman, a Russia specialist at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars and a consultant to the Pentagon. "That way, when they go up to do testimony, and people ask them, ‘Why aren’t you training the Ukraine military?’ they won’t have blank looks on their faces.”

Pentagon officials are under pressure to move forward with that training, analysts say, because the Obama administration is legally required to report to Congress by Feb. 16 on the progress it is making on training and equipping Ukrainian security forces.

That report must contain a detailed list of the defense services and military training the U.S. government expects to provide to Ukraine and a time line for delivery of those services and training, according to the Ukraine Freedom Support Act of 2014.

But even though the report is due next week and the military-to-military coaching lesson is slated to begin in western Ukraine in March, Pentagon officials are still undecided on some of the basic elements of their training plan, such as how many troops will go there.

What Pentagon officials do know is they plan on sending soldiers from the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team in northeast Italy to teach Ukrainian security forces how to strengthen their law enforcement capabilities and maintain "rule of law,” said Pentagon spokeswoman Air Force Lt. Col. Vanessa Hillman.

The Ukrainian government specifically requested that type of training, in part because it will help it move toward reforming its police forces and establishing its national guard, she said.

Now that service is actively fighting pro-Russian rebels near the industrial city of Donetsk in a portion of eastern Ukraine in a tit-for-tat firefight that has turned suburban neighborhoods into a sprawling battlefield.

So to further bolster the growth of the nascent military service, the U.S. government has invested millions of taxpayer dollars on a "do something” approach, said Mr. Kofman.

"We’re doing something to help, but is this going to be decisive for Ukraine in any way? No. It’s not,” he said. "Does it solve any of Ukraine’s real problems? No. Not really. It helps if you have to look at it from the perspective of ‘everything helps.’ But Ukraine’s problems in scale are so large that training 600 men here or there isn’t going to do it.”

Still, there are analysts who say that something is better than nothing.

Any gesture of support from the U.S. government during a time of hostile discord and continuous suffering sends a message of encouragement to the Ukrainian people, said Kimberly Marten, a professor of political science at Barnard College, Columbia University.

The most important takeaway for them will be that "the hard process of change is worth the effort,” Ms. Marten said.

"Of course U.S. training alone can’t overcome corruption or organizational disarray,” she said. "But anything the U.S. can do to strengthen Ukrainian institutions — including the national guard— is money well spent. U.S.-funded security training programs around the world have been very successful in recent years in raising the technical quality of forces and enhancing their ‘esprit de corps.’”

Ukraine, on the other hand, is still trying to win an uphill battle with limited military assistance from the U.S. government, which irks such lawmakers as Sen. John McCain, Arizona Republican and chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee.

McCain courting Ukrainian neo-Nazis

Following Mr. Obama’s joint press conference with Mrs. Merkel, the Arizona Republican blasted their "more of the same” diplomatic strategy and described it as "doomed to fail” because it doesn’t arm the Ukrainians with the weapons they need to defend their country.

Arming the Ukrainians is the only way to show Russian President Vladimir Putin that his attempts to take control of the eastern part of the country will not be tolerated, Mr. McCain said.

"Defensive lethal assistance to Ukraine will raise the risks and costs Russia must incur to continue its offensive,” he said. "And it will pierce the veneer of the Kremlin’s cynical and false narrative that there are no Russians in Ukraine. As Russian soldiers fail to return home from Ukraine, Putin will be challenged to sustain a war that he has told his people is not happening.”

The U.S. government committed $320 million in 2014 to providing aid to Ukraine and spent another $118 million on non-lethal military assistance.

In January the U.S. military delivered two light-armored trucks and one forklift to the national guard, said Pentagon spokesman Army Col. Steve Warren. This week, military officials plan to deliver to security forces 62 radios and 18 water purification units, he said.

MIT States That Half Of All Children May Be Autistic By 2025 Due To Monsanto

Multitudes of simple-minded, unquestioning slave workers for U.S.  criminal corporations and armies of mindless military cannon fodder

By Janet Phelan

A senior scientist at MIT has declared that we are facing an epidemic of autism that may result in one half of all children being affected by autism in ten years.

Dr. Stephanie Seneff, who made these remarks during a panel presentation in Groton, MA last week, specifically cites the Monsanto herbicide, Roundup, as the culprit for the escalating incidence of autism and other neurological disorders. Roundup, which was introduced in the 1970’s, contains the chemical glyphosate, which is the focal point for Seneff’s concerns. Roundup was originally restricted to use on weeds, as glyphosate kills plants. However, Roundup is now in regular use with crops. With the coming of GMO’s, plants such as soy and corn were bioengineered to tolerate glyphosate, and its use dramatically increased.

From 2001 to 2007, glyphosate use doubled, reaching 180 to 185 million pounds in the U.S. alone in 2007.

If you don’t consume corn- on- the -cob or toasted soybeans, however, you are hardly exempt from the potential affects of consuming glyphosate. Wheat is now sprayed with Roundup right before it is harvested, making any consumption of non- organic wheat bread a sure source for the chemical. In addition, any products containing corn syrup, such as soft drinks, are also carrying a payload of glyphosate.

According to studies cited by Seneff, glyphosate engages “gut bacteria” in a process known as the shikimate pathway. This enables the chemical to interfere with the biochemistry of bacteria in our GI tract, resulting in the depletion of essential amino acids.

Monsanto has maintained that glyphosate is safe for human consumption, as humans do not have the shikimate pathway. Bacteria, however, does—including the flora that constitutes “gut bacteria.”

It is this ability to affect gut bacteria that Seneff claims is the link which allows the chemical to get on board and wreak further damage. The connection between intestinal flora and neurological functioning is an ongoing topic of research. According to a number of studies, glyphosate depletes the amino acids tyrosine, tryptophan, and phenylalanine, which can then contribute to obesity, depression, autism, inflammatory bowel disease, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

Monsanto disagrees. The food and chemical giant has constructed a webpage with links to scientific studies pronouncing the safety of glyphosate.

Other science writers have also taken up the Monsanto banner, scoffing at the scientific studies that prompted Seneff to make her claims. “They made it up!” pronounced Huffpost science writer Tamar Haspel, in an article thin on analysis but heavy ondeclarative prose.

Others, such as Skeptoid writer and PhD physicist Eric Hall, take a more measured approach, and instead focus on the studies which prompted the glyphosate concerns. According to Hall, Seneff is making an error known as the “correlation/causation error,” in which causality is inaccurately concluded when there exists only the fact that two separate items—in this case, the increased use of glyphosate and the increased incidence of autism—may be observed but are not, in fact, directly related.

A little common sense goes a long way

Seneff’s pronouncements focus specifically on the glyphosate issue. As we know, there are other potential tributaries which may be feeding the rise in autism and also causing age-related neurological conditions, such as Alzheimer’s. These may include contents of vaccines, aluminum cooking ware as well as other potential sources for chemical consumption.

Some individuals, such as M.D. and radio host Rima Laibow have speculated on the intentionality behind this ostensible chemical siege against our gray matter. Laibow believes that the impetus may be to create an entire class of autistic individuals who will be suited only for certain types of work.

This harks back, eerily, to Aldous Huxley’s classic Brave New World, in which individuals were preprogrammed from “conception” for eventual placement in one of five groups, designated as Alpha, Beta, and so on down to Epsilon, based on their programmed brain power. In Huxley’s dystopian world, this class delineation by intellectual ability enabled society to function more smoothly.

Whatever may driving the autistic/Alzheimer’s diesel train, one thing is for certain: the spectre of half of our children coming into the world with significant brain damage constitutes a massive and undeniable wound to humanity.

Perhaps a new Amendment to our Constitution is in order

The rate of autism has skyrocketed from roughly one in every two thousand in the 1970’s to the current rate of one in every sixty eight. Alzheimer’s has become almost universal in the elderly. Seneff’s predictions can only be ignored at grave risk to the human race.
