The United States Declaration of Independence which adopted by the Continental Congress meeting at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on July 4, 1776 was saying: "We hold these truths to be self-evident: That all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed."


That 1776 Declaration of Independence from Britain’s King George by the United States of America has been echoed by many US Presidents, and Mr Obama reiterated the sentiments by saying that "We believe in human dignity — that every person is created equal."

The Declaration is an inspiring document. If the world had embraced its tenets we would be living in paradise. But mankind is a defective species and the Earth is now a place which generations of humans have allowed and even encouraged to become a heaving swamp in which aggression, insult and confrontation have defeated the pursuit of happiness. In the field of international relations it might be expected that such a supporter of human dignity as Obama would refrain from expressing himself in a bellicose fashion and take a more dignified and less confrontational approach than he has adopted in the past six years.


In March 2014 Obama declared that "although Russia has legitimate interest in what happens in a neighbouring state that does not give it the right to use force as a means of exerting influence inside of that state." While we can ignore his blatant lie in alleging that Russia used that if there had been the slightest indication of any such operation, the story would have been headlined on page one of the New York Times) we can’t overlook the fact that Obama enthusiastically approved the use of shattering military force as a means of exercising influence within other countries that were far from being neighbours of the United States.

Such moral tap-dancing is known as hypocrisy.

As he said in March 2011 in his White House apologia for initiating the US-NATO ruinous blitz on Libya, "There will be times... when our safety is not directly threatened, but our interests and values are». And he brought up the all-embracing justification for armed intervention by invoking the usual mantra that «the United States, as the world’s most powerful nation, will often be called upon to help."

The fact that this was utter humbug became clear when he proclaimed that "there is no question that Libya—and the world—would be better off with [President] Qaddafi out of power. I, along with many other world leaders, have embraced that goal" — although he included a phrase about achieving it "diplomatically" before his cruise missiles and rockets smashed into Gaddafi’s compound.

The US-NATO air assault on the Libyan government involved 246 cruise missile strikes and some 30,000 attacks by hundreds of aircraft over seven months. It resulted in destruction of the country’s economic infrastructure and achieved Mr Obama’s goal of killing Gaddafi — who was murdered by people being supported by US-NATO airstrikes. As reported in the media "someone filmed the gruesome shot of what seemed to be a mortally wounded Gaddafi, an image that would quickly be broadcast worldwide." That speedy conveyance to all quarters of the globe by international media of a grisly murder was probably the beginning of the practice now in such common and effective use by the savages of Islamic State. Their instant transmission on social media of their acts of hideous barbarism is a most effective propaganda tool.

As noted by the UK’s Financial Times in April, "Libya‘s civil war has left much of the country in chaos. The vacuum has allowed the Islamic State, or Isis, to get a foothold in the country and halted faltering efforts at staunching the flow of migrants, drugs, weapons and extremists across Libya’s sparsely populated desert terrain. Underscoring the dangers, Isis released a video showing its militants beheading and shooting a group of Ethiopian migrants, ostensibly because they were Christians"

Well done, Obama.

In April Obama told reporters that "We are consistently looking where terrorist threats might emanate, and Libya, obviously, is an area of great concern." He "urged Gulf nations to help calm the chaotic political situation in Libya, saying that outside military action would not be enough to help reduce tensions in the war-ravaged North African country."

But in 2011 Mr Obama was all in favour of "outside military action" against Libya. Military operations were justified, he said, and would "support the aspirations of the Libyan people" and have the result that they "will be able to determine their own destiny, and that is how it should be."

As his airstrikes on Libya began in March 2011 the Los Angeles Times reported his declaration that "the US had an 'important strategic interest' in preventing Gaddafi from overrunning the opposition forces because a massacre would have driven thousands of refugees across Libyan borders and put a strain on the transitional governments in Egypt and Tunisia and on American allies in Europe."

Which is exactly what has happened in 2015. The massive surge in numbers of refugees crossing the Mediterranean from North Africa has created problems in Europe which, although of no concern to Washington, are critical and perhaps unsolvable. All thanks to a war that was begun because although as Obama said "our safety is not directly threatened" he considered that Washington’s "interests and values" were at risk.




Obama claims he deplores interference in other nations’ internal affairs and says that "bigger nations should not be able to bully smaller ones" but proudly pronounced that "America is training and equipping the Syrian opposition to be a counterweight to the terrorists of ISIL and the brutality of the Assad regime" — Just as he did in Libya, which is now as chaotic as Iraq and Afghanistan, two other countries invaded and reduced to anarchy by a bigger nation that bullied them. There is little evidence of "Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness" or of the "human dignity" so desired by Obama in any country that has been subject to or influenced by America’s wars.

The crowning piece of hypocrisy in Obama’s stance about the war on Libya was his ludicrous attempt to avoid responsibility for the catastrophe he initiated. On March 28, 2011 he announced that "Our most effective alliance, NATO, has taken command of the enforcement of the arms embargo and the no-fly zone. Last night, NATO decided to take on the additional responsibility of protecting Libyan civilians. This transfer from the United States to NATO will take place on Wednesday." 

It is unlikely that even Obama could had forgotten that the Supreme Allied Commander Europe, the military head of NATO, is always a four-star American general.

That is Five Star Hypocrisy.

An “insatiable” demand for analysts of drone intelligence is driving the US military to hire private contractors, with 1 in 10 analysts now a civilian, says a new report. Civilian analysts describe their work as “gambling,” with innocent lives at stake.

a defensive rather than offensive war against them
The Bureau of Investigative Journalism (BIJ), a UK-based nonprofit, conducted a six-month probe into the US military’s contracting of drone data analysts, using specially designed software to sift through some 8 million transaction records published by the Pentagon between 2009 to 2014. They also interviewed some of the contractors, who asked to remain anonymous.

The BIJ investigation estimates that one in 10 analysts of drone data is currently a civilian contractor. However, they say that the data available to them covered only the US military. CIA contracts, which involve the controversial operations in Yemen and Pakistan, remain classified.


According to the investigation, US military drones and spy planes gather 1,100 hours of video data every day, which has to be analyzed, often in real time. Military officials say the need for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance – ISR, in military parlance – has spiked since the campaign against Islamic State was launched last summer.

“We’re seeing just an insatiable demand signal,” said Colonel Jim Cluff, commander of the drone squadrons at Creech Air Force Base in Nevada. “You cannot get enough ISR capability to meet all the warfighters’ needs.”

Contractors interviewed by the BIJ, speaking on condition of anonymity, say they are usually former military. They say they have more knowledge and experience than the uniformed airmen, who are often fresh high-school graduates.

“You cannot identify something unless you’ve seen it before,” said one full-motion video (FMV) analyst.

The civilians review live footage from drones and spy planes surveilling the battlefields of the Middle East, and advise uniformed operators whether the people they spot are civilians or potential targets. 


While the contractors never pull the trigger themselves, their advice shapes the thinking of military operators and commanders.

“As a civilian I don’t have authority to arrest someone, but if I call the police and say ‘this person’s doing something,’ and say ‘I think that guy’s dangerous’ … the police are going to turn up primed to respond to the threat, they’ll turn up trusting my statement,” said one analyst, who asked to be called John. “It could be argued that I was responsible, but I’m not the one shooting.”

Every call he makes is a gamble, John explained, with the stakes being the lives of innocents. “That is a motivation to play as safely as I can, because I don’t want someone who wasn’t a bad guy to get killed,” he said.




“It is critical to understand everything that happens, happens in real life. When you mess up, people die,”said another analyst, adding that the main role of FMV analysts is to ensure such mistakes do not happen.

At least 6,000 civilians have been killed in US drone strikes across the world, according to a group of 45 US military veterans who appealed to drone operators to stand down and “save your soul” in an open letter circulated last month.

While the Pentagon declined to comment on the report, a spokeswoman for the US Air Force told BIJ that ISR operations were “vital to the national security of the United States and its allies,” and in “insatiable demand” from combatant commanders. She said the increase in demand was the reason for using contractors, describing it as a “normal process within military operations.”

The role of contractors in processing, disseminating and using ISR is governed by procedures of the Air Force’s Judge Advocate, she said, adding that “oversight is accomplished by Air Force active duty and civilian personnel in real time and on continual basis with personnel trained on the implementation of procedural checks and balances.”

One contract singled out by the BIJ report was with Zel Technologies of Hampton, Virginia, which the USAF asked to provide experts “in the areas of the Horn of Africa, Arabian peninsula, Somalia, Syria, Iran, North Africa, Trans Sahel region, Levant region, Gulf States and territorial waters.”

Other contractors named in the report were MacAulay-Brown of Dayton, Ohio; L-3 Communications of New York, NY; Intrepid Solutions & Services of Reston, Virginia; TransVoyant of Alexandria, Virginia; Worldwide Language Services of Fayetteville, North Carolina; Booz Allen Hamilton of Tysons Corner, Virginia; and the UK-based BAE Systems.

Greece's Tsipras Challenges Party Bailout Critics To Showdown

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras challenged hard-left rebels in his Syriza movement on Thursday to put their opposition to new bailout negotiations to an immediate membership ballot, as he seeks to assert his control over the ruling party.

of Greece: "You don't argue with God!"
At a meeting of Syriza's 200-member central committee held in an old cinema hall with a giant red backdrop, Tsipras defended his decision to accept harsh bailout terms as the best deal anyone could win for Greece.

Greece narrowly averted an exit from the euro zone for now when it struck an 11th-hour deal with lenders this month, but that cost Tsipras the support of a quarter of his lawmakers who accuse the party of betraying its anti-austerity roots. In a defiant speech, the prime minister said his preference was for Syriza to hold an emergency congress in September to deliberate on strategy. 


If members wanted to challenge his course sooner, the central committee should order a vote by party members in three days.

"We are telling the Greek people, loud and clear and with no remorse, that this is the deal we managed to bring to them and if there is someone who thinks that they could have achieved a better deal, let them come out and say that," he told the session that included dissenters like parliament speaker Zoe Konstantopoulou.

The deepening crisis within Syriza is the most serious political challenge to Tsipras, who otherwise enjoys unrivalled domination of Greek politics and remains popular despite his sudden U-turn to accept stringent bailout terms.

Failure to quash the far-left revolt could plunge Greece back into turmoil and risk derailing talks now quietly underway in Athens with the European Central Bank, International Monetary Fund and the euro zone's rescue fund on a new 86 billion euro loan package.

In another potential setback for the talks, the Financial Times reported that IMF staff had recommended to the Fund's executive board that it should not take part for now in a third bailout, because of Greece's poor compliance record and the unsustainable level of its debt.

Only if Athens improved its track record of implementing reforms and its euro zone partners agreed to a substantial debt restructuring would the IMF consider joining the program at a later stage, the FT report said, citing a confidential summary of a board meeting held on Wednesday in Washington.


An IMF official said the Fund would approve new loans for Greece only if Athens reaches a deal with European governments that would ensure it can pay its debts, and there was "no expectation" that talks over the next couple of weeks would get to the point where the Fund could approve a new program.

Greek Finance Minister Euclid Tsakalotos is due to hold his first meeting with senior representatives of the nation's creditors, including the IMF, in Athens on Friday.

Germany, Greece's biggest creditor, has insisted on IMF participation in any further aid program.

DAMAGED RELATIONSHIP

In his speech, Tsipras threw down the gauntlet to Syriza's Left Platform faction, which has become increasingly vocal in its defiance, by challenging the central committee to call a party member vote for Sunday. He called such a vote a "referendum", although only party members would be polled, not the general public.


Tsipras received accolades from master terrorist Juncker for a job well done

Left Platform leader Panagiotis Lafazanis said the bailout deal betrayed the party's principles.

"Syriza is at risk of humiliation because of the bailout transformation," he told the meeting. "In this country there is no democracy... but the dictatorship of the euro."

As the all-day Syriza meeting proceeded in a rare public session, party officials spoke openly of a widening rift between those who want the country to stay in the euro area despite painful sacrifices, and leftists who would prefer a return to the drachma currency. 

"At the moment there are two different strategies competing in the same party - one that wants Greece inside the euro and the other that wants Greece outside euro," Olga Gerovasili, the government spokeswoman told reporters as she arrived. 




"These two can't exist together at the government level."

Deputy Prime Minister Yiannis Dragasakis said the hardliners were behaving like a party-within-the-party, and suggested the time may have come to part ways.

"You reap what you sow and I hope that we are heading for the refoundation of a new party." 

While most speakers criticized the bailout and government actions, many said the left should move on and not waste the historic opportunity of being in power. 




Left Platform is demanding Syriza abandon talks with lenders immediately and hold an ordinary party congress to determine the party's course. A regular congress would favor the far-left, with the same members who attended two years ago returning to vote on Syriza's future.

Tsipras would benefit from holding an emergency congress instead, which would enable him to bring in new members and capitalize on the wider public support he has secured over the past two years, making it easier to defeat the far-left camp.

A decision between the two options was expected later on Thursday evening.

Forced to rely on opposition support in parliament to pass austerity and reforms packages, Tsipras is widely expected to call early elections to consolidate his grip on the party once he has agreed the third bailout package with lenders.




His government wants to wrap up negotiations with lenders on that package in time for a major debt payment due on August 20, before moving on to sorting out his party's troubles.

"Our priority is the (bailout) deal," Gerovasili said. "After this we can deal with party issues."

The deal with creditors was “not of our choice,” Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has said, adding that Greece faced the dilemma between a difficult compromise and disorderly default.


Tsipras cashes in on Greek apocalypse 
Speaking to the Syriza committee in Athens Thursday, Tsipras tried to defend Greece’s €86 billion bailout deal with the international creditors, saying that Grexit was not a choice. It would have forced Athens into devaluation and going back to the IMF for support, he added.

“If someone believes another government could have brought back a better deal they should say so, ”Kathimerini newspaper quoted Tsipras as saying.



The PM added that Syriza’s efforts had managed to stir up the EU.

“We created the first cracks in Europe's neoliberal hegemony. We have to give a definitive answer on whether a leftist government can exist in a liberal, conservative Europe,” Tsipras said.


Greek money laundromat already in operation

This month, Tsipras reached an agreement with the troika of creditors on a €86 billion 3-year financial aid deal. The offer demands further austerity including tax hikes and raising the retirement age.




Many members of Syriza, including former finance minister Yanis Varoufakis, openly consider Alexis Tsipras’ policy contradictory to the results of the July 5 referendum, in which 61 percent voted against austerity. 

The lack of unanimity in the Greek parliament may put an end to the coalition and thus lead to new elections.




The Greek parliament has already adopted two packages of changes, which allowed Athens to kick off negotiations with creditors on unlocking the bailout.

Greece intends to finish the talks by August 20, when a €3.2 billion bond repayment to the ECB is due.




"There is a viewpoint the blackmail (by creditors) was not real, and there should not be an agreement. This view cannot wait until the extraordinary congress,” Tsipras said, suggesting a ballot on the issue on Sunday.
