Abused Indonesian Maid In Time 100 As Trial Opens In Hong Kong

The death penalty for abusers of Indonesian maids, women

THE MANILA TIMES
04/25/2013

HONG KONG -

Time magazine has named an Indonesian maid allegedly tortured by her Hong Kong employer as one of the world’s 100 most influential people, putting the spotlight on the city’s treatment of its migrant workers.

Erwiana Sulistyaningsih was horribly tortured by employer
Erwiana Sulistyaningsih, 23, reportedly suffered months of abuse in a case which has renewed concerns over the treatment of domestic helpers in the southern Chinese city and sparked angry protests.

Time magazine hailed Sulistyaningsih’s bravery in speaking out against her employer, and pushing for laws that better protect maids in Hong Kong.

“It is brave women like her who speak up for the voiceless who will create lasting change,” Cambodian activist Somaly Mam said of Sulistyaningsih in the list published on Thursday.

“Erwiana is advocating for better laws to protect others who may share her fate, placing a spotlight on the plight of a vulnerable and often invisible population,” Mam said.

Police escort Lo Wan-Tung to her home for further investigation
Time’s recognition of Sulis–tyaningsih brings international attention to the treatment of migrant domestic workers in the city, Hong Kong-based Asian Migrants’ Coordinating Body spokesman Eman Villanueva, a Filipino, told Agence France-Presse on Friday.

“The inclusion itself only proves that the issue of migrant domestic workers, the slavery, the exploitation and abuse is something that the international community should pay attention to,” Villanueva said. He described the situation as “ripe for abuse” in the city, where maids are required to live with their employers.

Villanueva also said Erwiana’s actions and her inclusion on the list will help empower more victims to speak out.

“This would encourage and would strengthen the resolve of many other victims to come out in the open and fight for their rights and seek justice,” he said.

Law Wan-tung, a 44-year-old Hong Kong mother-of-two has been charged with causing grievous bodily harm to Sulistyaningsih.

Prosecutors have alleged that Law turned household items such as a mop, a ruler and a clothes hanger into “weapons” against Sulistyaningsih.

She was also charged with common assault and four counts of criminal intimidation — charges related either to Sulistyaningsih or to her two previous Indonesian domestic helpers.

Erwiana Sulistyaningsih faces a long rehabilitation, recovery
The trial has been adjourned to April 29, with officials awaiting the maid’s medical records from Indonesia.

Sulistyaningsih was admitted to hospital in Sragen, on Indonesia’s main island of Java, in critical condition after returning from Hong Kong in January.

The Asian financial hub is home to nearly 300,000 maids, mainly from Indonesia and the Philippines, and criticism from rights groups over their treatment is growing.

Amnesty International in November condemned the “slavery-like” conditions faced by thousands of Indonesian domestic helpers in Hong Kong and accused authorities of “inexcusable” inaction.

Time magazine’s list also included Pakistan’s Malala Yousafzai, who survived a Taliban attack in 2012 when she was shot in the head by the militants for campaigning for girls’ education.

Santiago Slams Lack Of Good Faith In Signing Of Defense Pact As Obama Slams China

No war to big or small, Obama will start them all; BBC liars say recent poll shows "85 percent" of Philippine citizens approve of treaty:  BBC, CNN, CIA Al Jazeera continue to ignore Philippine protests against Obama, U.S.

PHILIPPINE DAILY INQUIRER

MANILA, Philippines —

By letting their subalterns sign the defense deal, President Aquino and visiting US President Barack Obama showed lack of good faith, Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago said on Monday.

Not buying it:  Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago
The Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) would not make the Philippines beholden to the United States but would antagonize China, she said.

That the agreement was signed by Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin and US Ambassador Philip Goldberg came as an “unfair surprise” to the Senate, she said in a statement.

“This contretemps does not indicate good faith on the part of the two presidents,” said the chair of the Senate foreign relations committee.

Santiago has argued that such an agreement should first be submitted to the Senate, which she said shared the treaty-making power with the President.

Since the Senate has not been furnished a copy of the deal, Santiago said she had no basis for assessing whether the deal was “positive for my country.”

“The Senate has not been given the courtesy of being furnished a copy,” she said. “I feel as if I have been slapped or ordered to melt into the wallpaper,” she said.

Philippine anti-U.S. protesters burn effigy of Obama

“America cannot have it both ways. It cannot tie down the Philippines to a mutual defense treaty and yet hope that it will not ruffle the feathers of China,” she said.

The senator doubted that the deal would oblige the United States to rush to Philippine aid if attacked by China, which has been aggressively asserting its claims to the West Philippine Sea (South China Sea).

BBC, CIA Al Jazeera frauds, Obamaite shills ignore protests
“For one thing, the MDT (Mutual Defense Treaty) does not define what is a ‘metropolitan territory’ of each state. For another thing, the MDT provides that the United States will come to the aid of the Philippines only after the issues have been passed through US constitutional processes, meaning that it is subject to open-ended debate in the US Congress,” she said.

Hundreds of protesters marched from Liwasang Bonifacio to Mendiola in Manila to express their anger and disapproval at the Obama visit and the EDCA.

Members of the militant groups Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan), Karapatan and Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas burned a giant effigy of President Aquino and Obama in the form of a dog pulling a chariot, which they claimed signified the US pivot to Asia.

“Obama’s visit in Manila is a reaffirmation of the more than a century of colonial and neocolonial relations, and the Filipino people do not stand to benefit from his presence and from more US troops in the country,” said Bayan secretary general Renato Reyes.

About 20 militants staged a similar protest at the Subic Bay Freeport Zone.

A suspected bomb was found inside the Bayview Park Hotel in Ermita, Manila, just across the US Embassy. Police confirmed that a device from a suspicious package taken from the fifth floor of the hotel was harmlessly detonated. It was unclear if the incident was linked to the Obama visit.

“The Aquino government’s decision to bank on a US-led militarized response to the conflicts in the West Philippine Sea is exceptionally foolish,” Akbayan party-list said in a statement, echoing the sentiment of leftist groups in the House of Representatives.

“Even the much-touted ‘Asia pivot’ strategy that the EDCA will represent in the Philippines does not guarantee that the United States will defend us from China’s bullying in the region,” it noted. Saudi Prince Hails Confined Princesses

Isolated in the Middle East, Saudi despots will now pay for their crimes against women

In a post on his Facebook page, Prince Khalid Bin Farhan al-Saud praised Princess Sahar and her three sisters for their support for the uprising by “the oppressed people of the city of Qatif” in Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia.

Prince Farhan defected from the royal family in July 2013, saying that the Saudi regime “does not stand by God’s rules.”

His remarks came only days after the 42-year-old princess called on people in the kingdom to continue their anti-regime demonstrations.

“Greetings to martyrs and to free men in jail. It is an honor for me to learn the meaning of freedom, rights and dignity from you revolutionary people,” she said in a video message posted on YouTube.

“We promise to follow in your footsteps and not to let go of your hands,” she also said.

Sahar, Maha, Hala and Jawaher Al Saud are the daughters of Saudi King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz, who are reportedly being confined in a royal compound.

Protests against the Al Saud family have intensified since November 2011, when security forces opened fire on protesters in Qatif in Eastern Province, killing five people and leaving scores more injured.

Activists say there are over 30,000 political prisoners in Saudi Arabia.

Tremendous Gulf Between Obama’s Empty Threats, Actions

Obama's gamble in Ukraine a dismal failure; attempts to bluff his way out trounced by Putin

PRESS TV
04/28/2014

President Barack Obama’s foreign policy is under fire because his administration’s rhetoric and actions are different, according to an American political commentator.

Obama headed for impeachment
“There is a tremendous gulf between the Obama administration’s rhetoric and its actions,” James George Jatras told Press TV on Monday.

“On the one hand, its actions appear more moderate than the action’s of the predecessor Bush administration and that is one of the things that prompts the attacks by critics, especially from the Republican side that Obama is weak, he’s not standing strong enough internationally,” he added.

“At the same time, the rhetoric of the Obama administration is essentially the same as the Bush rhetoric and that we hear from the Republicans that the United States must lead, we will threaten other countries with military actions and sanctions,” the analyst said.

The US president has been criticized over his decisions regarding the crisis in Ukraine.

A number of Republican lawmakers said Obama’s sanctions against Russia are weak and ineffectual.

During a press conference in the Philippines on Monday, Obama announced new economic sanctions, targeting the assets and trade relations of 17 companies that are owned or controlled by allies of Putin.

Critics say the sanctions stop short of targeting entire sectors of the Russian economy.

“There is this disconnect between what Mr. Obama and his peoples are saying and what they’re doing. I think what is lacking is a coherent strategic vision that defends American national interests without attempting to impose a global dominance on other countries,” Jatras said.

EEU Will Return Russia to Superpower Status

Obama's failed CIA coup in Ukraine now in full blowback mode; White House criminals, NATO, EU, UK, IMF bluff called by Putin

NEW EASTERN OUTLOOK
By Viktoria Panfilova
04/29/2014

The presidents of Russia, Belorussia, and Kazakhstan, Vladimir Putin, Aleksandr Lukashenko and Nursultan Nazarbayev, respectively, are planning to sign into existence the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) until the end of May. After the ratification by the national parliaments on January 1st, 2015, the founding treaty will take effect. Armenia and then Kyrgyzstan may soon align themselves with these three leaders. Meanwhile, an anti-Eurasian forum recently took place in Almaty, the participants of which expressed the opinion that the EEU is for Russia not as much an economic as a geopolitical project, which reinforces her role as a superpower. That is why Moscow is accelerating the signing of the treaty.

In doing so Russia is obviously reacting to the EU’s accelerated signing of an association agreement with Ukraine and Moldova.

The signing of the EEU founding treaty, originally scheduled to take place in the fall of this year, was expedited to June and is now being discussed for May.

The events in Ukraine have certainly played a role in the changes. “Russia is trying to mobilize supporters of Eurasian integration and use existing and anticipated advantages for the purposes of propaganda, including doing so in her relations with Western states,” Natalia Haritonova, research fellow at Lomonosov Moscow State University, stated in an interview with the author. She pointed out that the official goal of the EEU is economic integration. In this sense “Union” is the next stage of integration after the formation of the EurAsEC (EuroAsian Economic Community) and Customs Union. “We’re talking about creating a common economic territory. It’s pretty clear what’s going on. However everyone knows that the economic basis in the form of a united economic area, even throughout its establishment, will have to take on a decidedly political and ideological-humanitarian nature as well. That’s unavoidable,” reports Haritonova.

NATO's CIA stooge Anders Fogh Rasmussen in deep trouble
Opponents site precisely this fact as their main argument against Eurasian integration. They strictly disagree with members of state unions sharing sovereignty, especially political sovereignty. Any integration requires the creation of supra-national structures, on behalf of which participating states hand over a portion of this sovereignty. This explains the poor results of earlier attempts at integration, starting with the Commonwealth of Independent States.

A portion of Kazakhstan’s population in particular sees integration with Russia as a threat of losing their government sovereignty and turning Kazakhstan into a colony of Russia’s neo-empire. For example, Kazakh community activist Serikzhan Mambetalin remarks that integration within the framework of the Customs and Eurasian union would mean the end of Astana’s multi-vector politics and a geopolitical shift towards Moscow: “We can’t integrate with Russia to the point of forgoing the opportunity to develop independently, without looking at Russia, our relations with China, the European Union, the USA, and other regional powers.”

The deputy general director of MSU’s Center for Research and Information Analysis of post-soviet space Yulia Yakusheva does not agree with this position. She especially noted that “concerns such as these have appeared as a result of poorly thought-out declarations by certain Russian politicians and experts, who advocate extending the future union with a political component as well.”

“In Russia almost no one notices such declarations, but in Kazakhstan they are taken in a very unhealthy way. On the whole, people in Kazakhstan to a large extent take anti-Eurasian sentiments in a very subjective and emotional way. From this point of view, the results of the anti-Eurasian forum in Almaty are extremely telling: the movement against Kazakhstan’s participation in the EEU is small, unorganized and unconsolidated,” Yakusheva says.

According to expert opinion, the first thing that captures one’s attention is the lack of clear-cut arguments. The Customs Union (CU) and the United Economic Space (UES) turned out to be scape-goats for literally all the country’s economic problems. To a certain degree the still unresolved problem of competent handling of the informational aspect of the integration project explains these tendencies, that is, the carrying-out of a wide-spread elucidative work amongst the many societal groups, business and political circles of Eurasian countries. However, recent polls in Kazakhstan show that about 85% of the people are for joining the EEU. “I think this data reflects the high level of trust in the direction Kazakhstan’s leadership is taking, as well as confidence in the efficacy of the Russo-Kazakh partnership. Under the circumstances, Russia has made an essential choice – she’s refused to introduce a political component into the project,” Yakusheva said in an interview with the author. According to her, world history provides many examples of erosion of an organization’s goals seriously slowing its growth and development. “At this point there’s no sense in forcing the creation of a political aspect within the Union. First we must build an effective economic organization. Notice that one of the words in the union’s title is “economic.” Moreover, in the EEU all parties will have an equal representation and voting rights, which excludes the possibility of Moscow dominating the other members of the alliance,” Yakusheva pointed out.

Yerevan is not expected to agree. Armenia is a potential EEU member. However, in May Armenia is not likely to sign the EEU’s founding treaty, given the fact that the appointed time for Armenia’s entering the CU has been postponed since March 5th 2014 and it’s still not clear when this will take place. “Armenia was refused and this is not only because Armenia failed to complete all the measures laid-out in the “road map,” but because Russia did not guarantee safety from damage that can come to Armenia’s economy as a result of an increase in customs tolls. That’s why on March 5th they announced, well, it’s alright, right now you’re not becoming a member of the CU, but later on we’ll discuss the possibility of joining the Eurasian union,” Stepan Safaryan explained to journalists.

However Russian deputy minister of foreign affairs Vasili Nebenzi in an Interfax interview noted that “a road map for entrance into the Customs Union and United Economic Space has been prepared for Armenia, which she is following with great success.” The completion of the road map will serve as the basis for an agreement for Armenia’s entrance into the Customs Union and UES and later joining the Eurasian Economic Union. The road map for Kyrgyzstan is under development and I admit the possibility that it will be passed at the Surpreme Eurasian Economic Counsil meeting April 29th ,” he said.

Institute of Economics research fellow Aleksandr Karavaev, in an interview with the author, expressed doubts as to whether every participant in the free-trade zone or member of the Customs Union will be able to join the EEU. “It all depends on which country we’re talking about. It’s possible that task won’t go to the Kremlin until the EEU’s existed for a long time. However, in terms of development for the CU, the appearance of new members is not surprising. Armenia is already entering the CU. Kyrgyzstan, Vietnam, Egypt, and Israel are, in various phases and levels, negotiating a free-trade zone with the CU. Switzerland and New Zealand suspended negotiations after anti-Crimea sanctions went into effect. Negotiations are taking place for the creation of a working party between the CU and India. The EEC is developing a series of working contacts in South America, who could eventually enter negotiations,” Karavaev said.

Neo - Nazis March In Lvov 'In Honor' Of Ukrainian Waffen SS Division

Obama, CIA fascist supporters and enablers engineering Nazi comeback in Ukraine

RT
04/28/2014

Hundreds took part in a march to mark the anniversary of the formation of the Ukrainian SS division, which fought for the Nazi’s against the Soviet Union during World War II, in the city of Lvov in the western Ukraine.

Around five hundred neo-Nazi supporters took to the streets in the center of the city on Sunday to celebrate the creation of the 14th SS-Volunteer Division ‘Galician’ on April 28, 1943.

Many of the participants wore embroidered national Ukrainian shirts and held SS Galician divisional insignias (a yellow lion and three crowns on a blue background) in their hands.

The demonstrators made their way from the monument to the Ukrainian nationalist icon of Stepan Bandera, and to the local cemetery where a memorial to the Galician soldiers is erected.

Bandera was the head of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN), which collaborated with Nazi Germany, and was involved in the ethnic cleansing of Poles, Jews and Russians.

The action went on despite calls from the local administration to abstain from public gatherings on the day as it “may harm the unity of the country.”

The march was staged by ‘Native Land’ and ‘Student Brotherhood of Stepan Bandera’ – radical organizations, supported by local motorcycle enthusiasts.

Despite the organizers promising that the rally would be a silent one, there were a lot of nationalist chants heard in Lvov.

However, slogans like – “SS Galician Division!” “People of Lvov are the strongest!” “Glory to the nation – death to enemies!” and “Bandera and Shukhevich are heroes of Ukraine!” – weren’t welcomed by many of the city’s residents, the UNIAN news agency reports.

It resulted in the route of the march being shortened and the organizers apologizing to those who were offended by the chants.

Around two hundred policemen provided security during the march, which proceeded without serious violations of public order.

None of the actual participants of the SS Galician Division were noticed taking part in the action, RIA-Novosti reports.

The Nazi occupational forces picked the SS Galician Division from volunteers in western Ukraine in order to tackle Soviet and Polish partisans.

The military formation, which became well-known for its ferocity, existed for over a year before being crushed by the Red Army in July 1944.

During the Nuremberg trials, all those who were officially acknowledged as SS members were labeled war criminals, and the Nazi organization itself was banned.

Blasts, Fierce Fighting In Donetsk Between Kiev Demostrators - Videos

CIA, "MSM" CNN, CIA Al Jazeera, Euronews spies need to be rounded up by GRU and summarily shot

RT
04/28/2014

There's gunfire, explosions and brutal clashes in the city of Donetsk in eastern Ukraine as fighting erupted between pro- and anti-govt protesters, RT’s stringer reports from the scene.

14 people have asked for medical assistance, with several hospitalized, after clashes in Donetsk, the regional administration told Interfax-Ukraine news agency.

According to Novosti Donbassa (Donbas News), eight people have been taken to the city’s Kalinin hospital after violence broke out.

The website also reports of a policeman being shell-shocked due to handmade grenade exploding near him.

Pro- and-anti-Kiev protest rallies took place simultaneously in the city.

According to RT’s stringer Graham Phillips, there were plenty of masked young men on both sides, and they were clearly looking for a fight The police failed to contain the crowd as protesters clashed with each other, using firecrackers, smoke grenades, baseball bats and sticks.

A group of about 1,000 “neo-Nazi thugs” has come to Donetsk from Dnepropetrovsk on Monday to cause provocations, the press-service of the self-proclaimed People’s Republic of Donetsk told RT.

“We were expecting an attack. We had objective information. Really, the guys arrived with baseball bats, sticks and rods. Those were the ultras from Dnepropetrovsk, FC Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk supporters. According to our info, there were also people from FC Dynamo Kyiv fan base. I have no information of any Right Sector involvement,” Vitaly Ivanov, a press-service member, who was at the scene, stressed.

Initially, there were about 200 local anti-Kiev activists, who went out “to meet them halfway in order to regain the initiative”, he said.

“More and more people joined us at an incredible pace as we made our way… When we reached them [pro-Kiev radicals], there were around 1,000 of us,”
Ivanov said.

According to him, the ultras were “surrounded by the police, which was brought, especially, for the occasion” as the officers on the scene were from Kirovograd region, but not from the Donetsk force.

“We were received with aggression. Smoke grenades were thrown at us. Several people got injured. Then there were a couple of small scuffles with the ultras. And then they just dispersed. They didn’t expect such a rebuff; that there’ll be so many of us,” he said.

There were around 2,000 pro-Kiev demonstrators, who were marching on one of the main streets of the city, RT’s Paula Slier reports from Donetsk.

When they crossed paths with a smaller rally of anti-government protesters, violent clashes erupted, she said.

“I was among the group that is anti-Kiev. What I saw was both sides with their faces covered. There were Molotov cocktails and stones being thrown... Among the anti-Kiev crowd people were shouting: ‘Crimea! Donbass! Russia!”
Slier reported.

U.S. Troops Land In Estonia For War Games On Russia’s Doorstep

Obama plays with WWIII using our troops as decoys - and Putin is about to give it to him

PRESS TV

Amid escalating crisis in Ukraine, the United States has sent about 150 American troops to Estonia that has a mutual border with Russia.

Putin's gift for Obama, EU, NATO fascists
The troops from the 173rd Airborne Brigade landed at the Amari airbase in western Estonia on Monday as part of a contingent of 600 to participate in a series of military drills throughout the year.

"The transatlantic link is not something that Estonians take for granted. Rather, we see it as a vital element of security in an unsecure world," said Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves, who welcomed the soldiers.

"This is why we so appreciate Allied boots on the ground here," he added.

At least 450 US soldiers already arrived in Latvia, Lithuania and Poland over the last week for joint war games, according to the US Department of Defense.

Meanwhile, four British fighter jets landed in Siauliai airbase in northern Lithuania on Monday, the first of 12 fighters scheduled to be deployed in the three Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.

"Clearly we are here to reassure our Baltic allies that we are able to protect their airspace, should it be needed," British Royal Air Force commanding officer Simon Hulme told reporters in Siauliai.

The Western military build-up at Russia’s doorstep has raised concerns of a direct confrontation between the NATO military alliance and Moscow over Ukraine.

Russia has also begun extensive military maneuvers near its border with Ukraine, saying the escalation of violence in eastern Ukraine and the militarization of the region by the US and its allies have forced it to react.

A military operation has been launched against anti-Kiev protesters in eastern Ukraine, which includes 11,000 Ukrainian soldiers, 160 tanks, 230 armored carriers, and at least 150 artillery pieces.

In an interview with Press TV on April 19, American political commentator Don DeBar noted that the US is “placing the military resources into the theater for an attack on Russia.”

He added that the Russians are apparently being encircled by the US military.
