U.S. Risks Becoming Unworthy Member Of Global Community : Analyst

America - thanks to Bush and Obama passed that point long ago

PRESS TV
02/21/2014

The United States risks becoming an unworthy member of the community of the nations if it reneges on its obligations agreed under a preliminary deal between Iran and world powers, a political commentator says.

James Fetzer, professor emeritus at the University of Minnesota Duluth, made the remarks in a phone interview with Press TV on Thursday.

“The situation is very disturbing if Iran has fulfilled all of its obligations under these tentative agreements and then the United States, or the other nations involved here, should not fulfill their obligations,” Fetzer said.

Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council -- Britain, China, France, Russia, and the United States -- plus Germany signed an interim nuclear agreement in Geneva, Switzerland, last November.

The deal is aimed at setting the stage for the full resolution of the West’s decade-old standoff with Tehran over its nuclear energy program.

Under the Geneva agreement, the Sextet agreed to provide Iran with some sanctions relief in exchange for Tehran agreeing to limit certain aspects of its nuclear activities during a six-month period.

In an interview with CNN on Monday, Wendy Sherman, under secretary of state for political affairs and the Obama administration’s top negotiator in talks over Iran’s nuclear energy program, admitted that Iran has fulfilled all its commitments under the interim deal.

“Iran, in this instance, has fulfilled its part [and] it would be a disgrace, it would be an international scandal, it would be completely discrediting of the United States as a great power for it to renege or fail to fulfill its obligations,” said Fetzer, who has written several books on important issues, such as the theoretical foundations of scientific knowledge, computer science, artificial intelligence, cognitive science, and evolution and mentality.

“I certainly hope, therefore, that the Obama administration, that Barack Obama and [Secretary of State] John Kerry do not renege because that would be a terrible, terrible example for the United States to set in the world,” the US academic stated.

“There is too much violation of international law, too much lawlessness, too much aggression, for which the United States, alas, is responsible for a very great deal. And this, it seems to me, would be a terrible black eye for the United States, and reveal that the United States is an unworthy member of the community of the nations,” he noted.

Iran and the P5+1 group continued their talks in the Austrian capital Vienna this week in order to reach a final agreement. According to Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, the talks concluded on Thursday with “an agreement on the framework and plan of action for the comprehensive nuclear talks".

Is Washington Considering A Full-Scale Drone War Over Syria?

A desperate Obama continues to pursue WWIII in Syria to save himself from impeachment

GLOBAL RESEARCH
By Timothy A. Guzman
02/21/2014

Will the Obama administration launch a full scale drone war over Syria in the coming months ahead? Public support for Washington to order a direct military intervention against the Syrian government because it is accused of using chemical weapons against civilians is at the lowest level in 20 years according to a Gallop Poll conducted on September 2013.

More than 51% of Americans oppose military action and 13% are unsure if military action is practical.

In February 2013, US Press Secretary Jay Carney stated to the public, the ethical and “wise” use of drones that can pinpoint targets without of course killing innocent civilians is legal:

"We have acknowledged, the United States, that sometimes we use remotely piloted aircraft to conduct targeted strikes against specific al Qaeda terrorists in order to prevent attacks on the United States and to save American lives. We conduct those strikes because they are necessary to mitigate ongoing actual threats, to stop plots, prevent future attacks, and, again, save American lives. These strikes are legal, they are ethical and they are wise. The U.S. government takes great care in deciding to pursue an al Qaeda terrorist, to ensure precision and to avoid loss of innocent life."

Washington did consider launching drone strikes in the same year as reported by the Los Angeles Times ‘CIA begins sizing up Islamic extremists in Syria for drone strikes’:

"The CIA has stepped up secret contingency planning to protect the United States and its allies as the turmoil expands in Syria, including collecting intelligence on Islamic extremists for the first time for possible lethal drone strikes, according to current and former U.S. officials.

President Obama has not authorized drone missile strikes in Syria, however, and none are under consideration."

Obama’s speech on his drone policy had concerns on the public’s attitude towards another war in the Middle East.

Obama said the following on the use of drones in foreign land:

"Any U.S. military action in foreign lands risks creating more enemies and impacts public opinion overseas. Moreover, our laws constrain the power of the President even during wartime, and I have taken an oath to defend the Constitution of the United States. The very precision of drone strikes and the necessary secrecy often involved in such actions can end up shielding our government from the public scrutiny that a troop deployment invites. It can also lead a President and his team to view drone strikes as a cure-all for terrorism."

In a recent meeting between French President Francois Hollande and President Obama to discuss issues in the Middle East and Africa, Obama was asked about the situation in Syria:

"I’ve said throughout my presidency that I always reserve the right to exercise military action on behalf of America’s national security interests. But that has to be deployed wisely. And I think that what we saw with respect to the chemical weapons situation was an example of the judicious, wise use of possible military action."

The Obama administration refers to the use of military action and how it is deployed as a “wise” option.

Is he talking about the use of drone warfare?

He later continued his statement saying that the Syrian situation is “Fluid”:

"Whether we can duplicate that kind of process when it comes to the larger resolution of the problem, right now we don’t think that there is a military solution, per se, to the problem. But the situation is fluid, and we are continuing to explore every possible avenue to solve this problem, because it’s not just heartbreaking to see what’s happening to the Syrian people, it’s very dangerous for the region as a whole, including friends and allies and partners like Lebanon or Jordan that are being adversely impacted by it."

The Obama administration can possibly launch a full scale drone war on Syria without involving ground troops since the public is opposed to another direct military intervention in the Middle East. Washington still has its hands tied with troops remaining in Afghanistan. Relations with President Hamid Karzai are strained. President Karzai refused to sign a security pact allowing 10,000 US troops to stay in Afghanistan for counter-terrorism purposes and training Afghan forces beyond 2014.

Karzai also wants limited NATO troops in Afghanistan.

With US and Israeli troops in preparation for a possible confrontation with Iran if nuclear talks fail, the use of drones would be a viable option for Washington since it would strike a delicate balance with the international community and the American public concerning their attitudes towards a new war using ground troops.

A full-scale drone war launched by Washington would seem like a low-intensity war to the public, meaning that a drone war is not really a “major war” involving US troops on the ground, as President Obama said in his 2013 drone policy speech “such actions can end up shielding our government from the public scrutiny “.

Washington would hope that the American public and the international community would not organize anti-war protests regarding America’s 21st century drone war against President Bashar al-Assad and the Syrian people involving so-called “precision” strikes. War is war, regardless of what some people in power may think. The public wants no war against Syria, but will Washington and its allies listen? That is a good question.

Venezuela’s President Maduro Threatens To Expel CNN Over Its Coverage

"Mainstream media" squeals in terror as their CIA spies are now being exposed, arrested, jailed:  Venezuela now following Egypt lead in ejecting, prosecuting MSM spies operating undercover as journalists

EURONEWS

Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro has threatened to expel the US TV news channel CNN unless it “rectified its coverage” of the recent protests.

“I asked the Communications Minister to notify CNN to start the administrative process of removing them from Venezuela if they don’t rectify their story. CNN, go from Venezuela and stop your propaganda war. I don’t accept a propaganda war,” Maduro announced on TV.

Anti-government protests continued in cities across Venezuela on Thursday with people angry at high levels of crime and economic hardship.

Six people have died in the last week of demonstrations with dozens more injured.

Pro-government supporters also marched in Caracas, in support of Maduro’s government.

Meanwhile, opposition leader Henrique Capriles called on the president to disarm pro-government groups.

“I ask for you to disarm illegal armed groups. As it is not true that the arms of the Republic are only in the hands of the armed forces,” Capriles said.

Maduro accuses the US and other right-wing governments of being behind the protests and attempting to overthrow him.

84-Year-Old Nun Sentenced To Prison For “Sabotaging” U.S. Preparations For War

Trial balloon to soon make all forms of dissent in America illegal:  Jailing of nun testimonial to the personification of evil that is now the United States, once the leader of the free world

WORLD SOCIALIST WEBSITE

An 84-year-old nun and two of her compatriots were sentenced to prison time for breaking into a nuclear weapons plant and covering parts of the facility with biblical phrases and human blood.

Martyr for humanity:  Sister Megan Rice
Sister Megan Rice was given a 35-month prison sentence. Michael Walli, 64, and Greg Boertje-Obed, 58, were both sentenced to 62 months in prison.

These sentences are in addition to the nine months they have already spent in jail.

The three could have faced sentences of up to 30 years for sabotage and damaging federal property.

The major felony they were convicted of was violation of the Federal Sabotage Act of 1918. This act, passed during World War I, prohibits “the destruction of war material” and “the obstruction of war preparation.” The implication of this is that the nuclear weapons production facility is an instrument in the preparation for war and is designed for future use.

Handmaiden of evil, U.S. traitor:  Jeffery Theodore
The prosecutor, Assistant US Attorney Jeffery Theodore, called for a six-to-nine year sentence. Theodore argued that the trio had conducted sabotage in line with the Act of 1918 and urged the court to recognize that their wrongdoings were “serious offenses that have caused real harm to the Y-12 National Security Complex.”

The Y-12 National Security Complex is, according to its web site, “a premier manufacturing facility dedicated to making our nation and the world a safer place… [playing] a vital role in the Department of Energy’s Nuclear Security Enterprise.” The plant was started in the 1940s as a key site for the Manhattan Project, the military scientific project that led to the creation of the first atomic bomb.

The trio broke into the complex on July 28, 2012. They cut through three separate fences and gained access to the most secure part of the facility, a $548 million dollar uranium storage bunker.

The protesters spent more than two hours inside. According to the Guardian newspaper, “they hung banners, strung up crime-scene tape and hammered off a small chunk of the fortress-like storage facility.” The group had filled up baby bottles with human blood and poured them on the sides of the wall. Biblical verses were spray-painted, such as “the fruit of justice is peace.”

Journalists now being threatened
The 84-year-old Rice said that she was “stunned” that she got so far into the facility and encountered no resistance for hours. She also expressed disbelief that the entire plant complex was shut down in response to the group.

When security guards arrived, the three protesters were singing. They offered white roses, candles, bread, and a bible to the security dispatch.

The Union of Concerned Scientists and certain government officials asked that the activists’ sentences be reduced because they had exposed holes in the security system of a site that is supposed to be one of the most secure in the world.

US District Judge Amul Thapar told the court before handing out sentences that “at some point, the law has to command respect, and there is a lawful way to change it.” The judge expressed the hope that prison would cause the defendants to reconsider their actions and bring them “back to the political system I fear that they have given up on.”

Sister Rice demanded no leniency for her actions and said, at the age of 84, that it would be an “honor” to spend the rest of her life in prison. US Attorney Theodore told the court that Rice and her cohorts were “recidivists and habitual offenders,” and that he was perturbed by the fact they “pretty much celebrated their acts.”

The United States possesses roughly 7,700 nuclear warheads, about 45 percent of the world’s known total of 17,300. A site, nukemap, shows the effect a nuclear weapon could have if it were detonated over a major metropolitan area.

"Saudi Arabia Key Sponsor Of Terrorism"

Apostate Saudi "royals" and "Chemical Bandar" responsible for Syrian gas attacks, Lebanon bombings

PRESS TV
02/21/2014

Saudi Arabia has become the key sponsor of terrorism across the world attempting to disseminate the Takfiri ideology, a political analyst tells Press TV.

“Now the main protector and incubator of all terrorist groups around the Arab world and around the world is Saudi Arabia itself,” said Redwan Rizk in a Friday interview.

The analyst pointed to reports that the Al Saud regime has relieved its spymaster, Prince Bandar bin Sultan, of his duties in spearheading the kingdom’s mission in the Syria crisis.

According to a new report by the Wall Street Journal, Saudi royal advisors say the removal of Prince Bandar from the task may lead to smoother Riyadh-Washington relations.

Rizk said sponsorship of terrorism “is not coming from Bandar as a person. It is a policy of the kingdom, it is the policy of the family to spread Wahhabism under any possible way they can.”

Hezbollah on the rise in Lebanon, Syria
“Saudi Arabia is trying to shine its image in front of the nations and trying to cover up its acts on the ground against all these crimes.”

He said Saudi authorities should be tried for as criminals of war and criminals against humanity. They are creating danger to the world.”

The analyst touched on Saudi Arabia’s role in the Syria crisis and said that many former officers of the Saudi army are now training an army of al-Qaeda forces in Jordan to operate in southern Syria in the near future.

In the past years, Prince Bandar has presided over Saudi Arabia’s anti-Damascus operations with little success. There has been no mention of Bandar in Saudi media outlets since January. He was reportedly in a hospital in the United States for treatment and is currently living in Morocco.
