Following up on homeless feeding controversy in Ft. Lauderdale
THE 5TH ESTATE ASIA

We have received numerous emails from individuals concerned about our homeless neighbors and the issues of homelessness. Many have asked how they can help our homeless, including where they can make donations to organizations providing assistance to the homeless. Without soliciting for or endorsing any one of the numerous worthy organizations, we encourage you to do whatever you can as we approach the holidays.

On Friday, December 5, 2014 at 7:30 a.m., I will once again be working at the 14th Annual Breakfast for Champions of the Homeless at the Homeless Assistance Center here in downtown Fort Lauderdale. This will be my sixth (6th) year serving as a Celebrity Waiter for this event and, this year, I will be joined by my fellow City Commissioners. The fundraiser is hosted each year by the Downtown Council of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce, and all proceeds from the event will assist the Broward Partnership for the Homeless in operating the 230-bed Central Homeless Assistance Center, which serves more than 1,200 homeless men, women and children each year.
In addition to safe shelter and nutritious meals, the Broward Partnership offers wrap-around case management and comprehensive services, such as medical and dental care, behavioral health, workforce development, family therapy and others that assist the homeless in reacquiring health, housing and employment as quickly as possible. For more information, please visit www.bphi.org.
Further, our website (FortLauderdale.gov) lists numerous other homeless assistance organizations that are also doing great work for the homeless here in our community, and we encourage you to review that list in determining where and how you can donate, contribute or volunteer.
Happy Thanksgiving and, more importantly, thanks!
