A spokeswoman for the Placer County Sheriff's Department said Mareclo Marquez, 34, was taken into custody at a home on Belmont Avenue just before 4 p.m.
Marquez was taken into custody nearly six hours after Sacramento County sheriff's deputy Danny Oliver was shot and killed in the parking lot of a Motel 6 on Arden Way in Sacramento.
Oliver, 47, was struck once in the forehead. He died from his wounds after being taken to a nearby hospital, Jones said.
Oliver was a 15-year veteran of the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department. He has a wife and two daughters, Jones said.
"To the men and women of the Sheriff's Department: We live as a family, today we will grieve as a family, and tomorrow we will start healing as a family. I pray for each and every one of you that you will find the courage that I know you have," Jones said.
Oliver is the first Sacramento County sheriff's deputy to die in the line of duty since Nov. 12, 2008.
The Placer County Sheriff's Department said two of their deputies were shot during the search for the suspected gunman.
