President Barack Obama ordered additional steps to ensure the American medical system is prepared to follow correct protocols in dealing with Ebola following news of an apparent breach in Dallas, the White House said in a statement Sunday.
Obama was briefed about the diagnosis of a second case of Ebola in Texas, where a healthcare worker has contracted the virus after treating a Liberian who died of the disease at a Dallas hospital last week.
Confirmatory tests run by the United States' Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed Sunday evening that the Dallas hospital staff member was infected by Ebola.
CDC Director Dr. Thomas Frieden said that at some point during the care of the original patient there was a breach in protocol which resulted in the infection of the healthcare worker.
"We'll conduct a full investigation of what happens before health workers go in, what happens when they're there, and what happens in the taking out, taking off their protective equipment because infections only occur when there's a breach in protocol,'' Dr. Frieden said in a televised interview on Sunday.
Obama said federal authorities should "take immediate additional steps to ensure hospitals and healthcare providers nationwide are prepared to follow protocols should they encounter an Ebola patient."
The measures include further training and information for medical staff. Meanwhile, the White House said the US was boosting laboratory capacity for Ebola detection and imposing more stringent border controls at international airports.
Chances of an outbreak in the US 'extremely low'
"We know what has to be done and we’ve got the medical infrastructure to do it. But this is an extraordinarily virulent disease when you don’t follow the protocols," Obama said, adding that "the chance of an Ebola outbreak in the United States is extremely low".
The Texas medic was the first person to become infected with the Ebola virus on US soil. Health officials have interviewed the patient and are identifying any contacts or potential exposures. They said people who had contact with her after symptoms emerged will be monitored based on the nature of their interactions and the potential they were exposed to the virus.
