A man armed with a hatchet who attacked a group of cops on a Queens street, critically injuring one of them, was shot dead by the officers on Thursday afternoon, and a female bystander was hit by an errant round.
The officer critically injured in the deadly encounter in Jamaica, a 25-year-old rookie, suffered a hatchet wound to the side of the head. He was being operated on and doctors listed him in critical but stable condition, NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton told reporters at a 5 p.m. press conference.
The bystander, a 29-year-old woman, was struck in the back by a stray bullet and also underwent surgery. She was initially listed in critical condition, but surgeons managed to stabilize her, Bratton said.
Hatchet in hand, the 32-year-old suspect rushed at four rookie cops as they stood on Jamaica Ave. near 160th St. about 2 p.m., police said. He lunged at them with the weapon, striking one of them in the arm and landing the severe blow to the 25-year-old cop’s head.
“The suspect charged at the officers,” Bratton told reporters.
The two officers who were not dealt hatchet blows fired at the suspect, killing him, Bratton said.
Police did not reveal how many rounds were fired, or where on the body the suspect was hit. His name was not released.
The clash took place on the sidewalk outside of a Conway store at mid-block. The female bystander was roughly two doors down when the bullet lodged in her lower back. Her name also was not released.
Police officials said the attack was unprovoked, and that the suspect did not make any statements during his crazy charge; but Bratton said a motive has not been established.
“It was a completely unprovoked attack,” said NYPD Chief Kim Royster, a department spokeswoman.
The four cops who were attacked all were graduated from the Police Academy in July, Bratton said. They were assigned to Jamaica’s 103rd Precinct.
The investigation was continuing Thursday night.
