The leader of the Ukrainian Batkivshchyna (Fatherland) opposition party, Arseniy Yatsenyuk, has asked President Viktor Yanukovich for a truce until morning, Itar-Tass reported.
Yatsenyuk appealed to Yanukovich while speaking from a stage on Maidan amid a standoff between armed protesters and police.

EU Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fule said he spoke with the acting Ukrainian prime minister over the phone and that the official assured him that no gunfire would be used against the anti-government protesters in Kiev.
“I was just on the phone with the acting prime minister, telling him that seeing the Berkut [riot] police with Kalashnikovs is a source of great concern, and he assured me that he himself and the authorities will do everything for those weapons to stay silent,” Fule said, as quoted by Reuters. He added that he has been “shaken” by images of Tuesday clashes in Kiev.

Rioters in central Kiev attempted to set fire to a police armored vehicle with a flurry of Molotov cocktails after the police used it to storm a barricade. Reports from the scene say the fire has been extinguished and the vehicle is now operational.

Police are using loudspeakers and urging protesters to leave Independence Square (Maidan). Speakers on stage are calling for the government to call off its “dogs” and are chanting slogans like “Glory to Ukraine!” and “Death to the enemies!”

An emergency meeting has been scheduled at 11pm local time between President Viktor Yanukovich and the nation's three opposition leaders to find a solution to the escalating violence, according to the Kiev Post.
However, the Unian news agency has reported that Yanukovich said he would meet the opposition only after the violence stops.

A group of rioters armed with clubs have stormed into the Canadian Embassy in Kiev, reports the press service of the Ukrainian Interior Ministry. The unidentified rioters broke into the Embassy, destroyed some of its property and attacked the Embassy’s staff, the ministry says.
Earlier on Tuesday, a group of about 1,000 rioters attempted to storm a district police headquarters building in Kiev, using an explosive device in the process. The rioters seized two trolley buses to block the streets and a truck to ram police cordons. They also smashed an ambulance and broke into several offices in central Kiev.

Security forces have started an anti-terrorist operation at Independence Square in Kiev.
The Berkut police forces and three water cannon have gathered at the scene, while armored troop carriers have reportedly surrounded the square.
Protesters are calling for women and children to leave the area immediately, while stun grenades are exploding at the scene.

Footage from central Kiev shows rioters hurling fireworks, petrol bombs and stones at the police regrouping around Independence Square (Maidan). Fire trucks were also in evidence and used for extinguishing fires ignited by protesters along the square, and for keeping rioters away from police lines.

Road traffic coming to Kiev will be limited from midnight to prevent an escalation of clashes, the Ukrainian Cabinet of Ministers has announced.
