The Director of National Intelligence, James Clapper, should be “fired” and “prosecuted” for lying to Congress about the nature of US spying programs, a peace activist tells Press TV.

“There’s a growing chorus of people who demand that Clapper be fired as Director of National Intelligence for perjuring himself and that in fact he should be prosecuted,” said Brian Becker, a member of the ANSWER Coalition, a protest umbrella group consisting of antiwar and civil rights organizations.
The US spy master gave false testimony during a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing in March about the mass collection of phone records by the National Security Agency (NSA).
During the hearing, Senator Ron Wyden asked Clapper whether the NSA “collects any type of data at all on hundreds of millions of Americans.”
Clapper told Wyden: “No sir, it does not.” When asked by Wyden for clarification, Clapper said “not wittingly.” Clapper later apologized for giving a “clearly erroneous” testimony to Congress.
Clapper “lied to Congress, in other words he perjured himself under oath,” Becker said.
“He said calculating no, the US government does not do that. Then we learned just weeks later from documents revealed by Edward Snowden that in fact, the US government does just that, it spies on the American people and the people of the entire world,” he added.
The NSA’s spying programs, uncovered last year by whistleblower Edward Snowden, has raised widespread privacy concerns about the reach of the agency's operations and its ability to spy on individuals in the United States and abroad as well as the communications of foreign leaders.
US Senator Rand Paul plans to file a class-action lawsuit against the Obama administration over the NSA programs. Paul urged everyone in the US with a cellphone to join the suit against the administration.
