The U.S. Unpromising Role in the New Middle East

The U.S. needs to get the hell out of other people's countries, only then will it know peace

Editors representing many Asian newspapers stood in a perfect line. They were nervous and giddy at the prospect of meeting Li Changchun, China’s powerful member of the Communist Party’s Politburo Standing Committee.

Personally, the Great Hall of the People and the fortitude of Chinese society mesmerized me.

Despite its challenges and repeated accusations of corruption and power struggles, China appeared composed while an unwavering forward movement was propelling it.

As for the country’s foreign policy, it is governed by a cautious slowly churning agenda, which is unambiguously clear in its long-term objectives.

On that day, nearly two years ago, we knew that Li was awaiting our arrival, for a solitary old jacket, which bore his name with a sticker fastened on the hanger, hung in a closet in the hallway leading to the room where the meeting took place. Li Changchun spoke frustratingly slow as if he were a Hollywood stereotype of a Chinese emperor. Self-assertive and unperturbed by our presence and the many probing questions, Li’s perception of history was much more far-reaching than one expected from the chief of propaganda. There was not much to quote in terms of sound bites, buzzwords or catch phrases. Li clearly saw his country’s foreign policy in light of US global military adventures, geopolitical advances and setbacks. No other country seemed to matter. It was a competition and China was determined to win.

A few months later, upheaval struck the Middle East. Its manifestations - revolutions, civil wars, regional mayhem and conflicts of all sorts - reverberated beyond the Middle East. Shrinking and rising empires alike took notice. Fault lines were quickly determined and exploited and players changed positions or jockeyed for advanced ones, as a new Great Game in the resource and strategic rich region was about to begin. The so-called ‘Arab Spring’ was rapidly becoming a game-changer in a region that seemed resistant to transformations of any kind. China was wary of its existing investment in the region - literarily, as was in the case of Libya, and figuratively, in its long-term relations with Arab and Muslim countries. So they moved with predictable caution: Wobbled at times, as in Libya, appearing firmer in Syria, and almost entirely aloof in Bahrain.

For China however, the space for future political movement is boundless. Unlike the United States, a ‘new’ or stagnant Middle East will not change the fact that China is barely associated with an atrocious history of military onslaughts or economic exploitation, with which western powers are undeniably associated. The speed of the political transition underway in the Middle East may require Li Changchun to speak a bit faster, a tad louder and with greater clarity, but it will hardly demand a complete shift in China’s policies. It is the interests and rank of the US, as the dominant foreign power in the region, that will consequently suffer irreparable damage.

When discussed through the prism of sheer political analysis, history can be narrow, selective, broken-down and problematically short. But based on a methodical historical investigation, reality is much less confusing, and the future is far less unpredictable. The seemingly unbridled conflict in the Middle East is no exception.

In his review of Fredrik Logevall’s recently published book: “Embers of War: The Fall of an Empire and the Making of America’s Vietnam,” Gordon Goldstein wrote, “Over the centuries, strategic overextension by great powers acting on the periphery of their national interests has hobbled ancient empires and modern states” (Washington Post, September 28). Goldstein was referring to US conduct in Southeast Asia, where the US adopted as its own, the disastrous legacy of French colonialism in Indochina (Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos). Both powers were squarely and humiliatingly defeated.

Empires don’t crumble overnight, however. A fall of an empire can be as agonizingly long as its rise.

Signs of that collapse are oftentimes subtle and might not be followed by a big boom of any sort, but can be unambiguous and definite.

Since the Second World War, US foreign policy has been largely predicated on military adventures, by severely punishing enemies and controlling ‘friends’. Diplomacy was often the icing on the cake of war, wars that seemed to follow similar patterns such as targeting powerless, economically browbeaten and isolated countries. It was a successful brand while it lasted. It allowed the generals to speak of the invincibility of their military might, the politicians to boast of their global responsibilities and the media to tirelessly promote American values. Few seemed to care much for the millions of innocent people who bore the brunt of that supposed quest for democratization of the Third World - the American equivalent of France’s Mission Civilisatrice or 'civilizing mission’ of the ‘barbarian’ others.

Few US foreign policy disasters can be compared to that of the Middle East. Similar to its Southeast Asia inheritance from the French, the US ‘inherited’ the Middle East from fading British and French empires. (For example, such recurring media questions as ‘who lost Egypt?’ is indicative of that perception.) Unlike European imperial powers, US early contacts with the region were marred with violence, whether through its support of local dictatorships, financing and arming Israel at the expense of Palestinians and other Arab nations, or finally by getting involved - some say, entangled - in lethal wars. The memory of Iraq’s destruction will never fade away from the annals of Arab history. It is a major dark spot close to that of US support for Israel. In fact, as it stands, the chapter of US-Arab relations is tainted beyond any comprehension.

The US does not lack bright historians and sharp analysts capable of helping devise an alternative foreign policy. But the problem of ‘great’ empires is that their ability to maneuver is oftentimes restricted by their sheer size and the habitual nature of their conduct.

They can only move forward and when that is no longer possible, they must retreat, ushering in their demise. US foreign policy is almost stuck when it is required to be most agile.

While the Middle East is finally breaking away from a once impenetrable cocoon, and China - and Russia, among others - is attempting to negotiate a new political stance, the US is frozen. It took part in the bombing of Libya because it knows of no other alternative to achieving quick goals without summoning violence. In Syria, it refuses to be a positive conduit for a peaceful transition because it is paralyzed by its military failure in Iraq and fearful over the fate of Israel, should Syria lose its political centrality.

Even if the US opts to stave off a catastrophic decline in the region, it is shackled by the invasive tentacles of Israel, the pro-Israel lobby and their massive and permeating network, which crosses over competing media, political parties and ideological agendas. The US is now destined to live by the rules - and redlines - determined by Israel, whose national interests are barely concerned with the rise or demise of America. Israel only wants to ensure its supremacy in the ‘new’ Middle East. With the rise of post-revolutionary Egypt, Israel’s challenges are growing. It fears that a nuclear Iran would deprive it from its only unique edge - its nuclear technology and massive nuclear arsenal.

If Iran obtains nuclear technology, Israel might have to negotiate in good faith as an equal partner to its neighbors, a circumstance that Israel abhors. Between the Israeli hammer and the anvil of the imminent decline of all empires, the US, which has held the Middle East hostage to its foreign policy for nearly six decades, is now hostage to the limitations of that very foreign policy. The irony is inescapable.

Listening to the monotonous voice of Li Changchun, it was clear that China was in no great hurry. Nor are the other powers now eyeing with great anticipation, the endgame of the Middle East upheaval.

Listening to US President Barack Obama’s lecture to the UN’s General Assembly on September 25, as he spoke of democracy, values and the predictable and self-negating language, it seems that there is no intention in changing course or maneuvering or retreating or simply going away altogether. The empire is entangled in its own self-defeating legacy. This is to the satisfaction of its many contenders, China notwithstanding.

Reuters Claims (Falsely) that HPV Vaccine Found Safe in Large Study

Reuters shills for Gardasil, Merck & Co.’s killer vaccine;  How much were they paid to print this piece of crap; Reuters will also be held responsible for a ALL DEATHS RESULTING FROM THIS BOGUS, EUGENICIST "vaccine"

A study of nearly 190,000 young women injected with Merck & Co's human papillomavirus vaccine Gardasil found no new safety concerns.

Researchers said the only side effects they observed - rare cases of skin infections and fainting - were benign and expected.

"This analysis was very reassuring," said lead researcher Dr. Nicola Klein of the Kaiser Permanente Vaccine Study Center in Oakland, California, whose work was funded by Merck.

HPV vaccination is recommended for both boys and girls to shield them from the sexually transmitted infection, which may cause various types of cancer.

While Gardasil has already been deemed safe and effective by health regulators across the globe, large follow-up studies are typically required after vaccines hit the market to make sure less-common side effects haven't been missed.

Klein's team studied girls and women ages 9 to 26 who had had at least one Gardasil shot between 2006 and 2008. Based on electronic records, they compared ER visits and hospitalizations soon after vaccination and several months later, when short-term side effects would no longer be expected to show up.

Parents will be responsible for the deaths of their children
Three doses of Gardasil, the recommended amount, cost about $360. U.S. health regulators have found no serious side effects apart from soreness at the injection site.

At first glance, several health conditions appeared to be linked to the vaccination, including seizures, allergic reactions and birth defects in vaccine recipients.

A special safety committee without ties to Merck concluded that most of these conditions were not truly caused by the vaccine, however, but rather unrelated or preexisting conditions detected when the shot was given.

"All of a sudden these things get brought up again," said Klein, "but it has absolutely nothing to do with the vaccination."

After reviewing medical records for a number of different conditions that might be linked to the vaccine, the researchers determined that only two of them were legitimate findings.

As will doctors, medical "professionals" that administer this killer

In the two weeks after getting the vaccine, there were 1.8 cases of skin infections per 10,000 women, compared to just one case per two weeks per 10,000 women months away from the vaccination.

And some of those "infections" might simply have been red swellings at the injection site, said Klein, whose findings are published in the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine.

A STRESS REACTION?

On the day of the vaccination, the rate of fainting was six times higher than usual. But again, the risk was very low and has been seen before in other vaccine studies, Klein said.

It's possible that fainting may be a stress reaction to the injection itself, according to Dr. Michael Brady, an expert in pediatric infectious diseases at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.

He said adolescents should sit down for 15 minutes after getting a shot, as also advised by health officials.

"If they do fall and hit their head it can have consequences, so it's not something to be ignored," added Brady, who was not involved in the new work and has no ties to HPV vaccine makers.

Overall, he said the study didn't bring up any unexpected concerns.

"The combination of a vaccine that is working and is safe should make people feel comfortable," Brady added.

Gardasil is expected to prevent more than 90 percent of genital warts and between 60 and 70 percent of cervical cancers, according to Dr. Christopher Harrison of Children's Mercy Hospitals and Clinics in Kansas City, Missouri.

"The risk benefit here is clearly and resoundingly in favor of the vaccine being much more beneficial than risky," said Harrison, who was not linked to the new study and has not had any relationship to Merck for the past three years.

U.S. Marine General John Allen : 'I'm Mad As Hell' About Insider Attacks In Afghanistan - CBS (Not You Tube) Video

General Allen heroically speaks out - again:  Why is it that the majority of people questioning the Bush/Obama illegal wars are Marines?

Huffington Post
By Joshua Hersh
10/01/2012

The top American commander of troops in Afghanistan showed signs of impatience about the growing spate of insider attacks that have taken a toll on U.S. troops during a blunt interview on "60 Minutes" Sunday night.

Marine Hero General John Allen
"I'm mad as hell about them, to be honest with you," Gen. John Allen said in response to a question about the incidents, which the military calls insider, or green-on-blue, attacks. "We're going to get after this. It reverberates everywhere, across the United States. You know, we're willing to sacrifice a lot for this campaign. But we're not willing to be murdered for it."

President Barack Obama's plan for withdrawal from Afghanistan calls for the U.S. to train Afghan security forces to defend their own country as most of the remaining 68,000 U.S. troops return home in 2014.

In the meantime, Allen -- who said that the "vast majority" of Afghans and Afghan soldiers stood with the U.S. -- warned that Americans should be prepared to see the deadly attacks continue.

"The enemy recognizes this is a vulnerability," Allen said. "You know, in Iraq, the signature weapon system that we hadn't seen before was the IED. We had to adjust to that. Here, I think the signature attack that we're beginning to see is going to be the insider attack."

Coward, murdering shitbag George W. Bush's idea of a reward for this Marine's horrific injuries sustained in Iraq:  A fucking worthless T-shirt - this Marine later committed suicide and will be avenged by his Brothers - General Allen is right to be mad as hell, as are all good Marines

Allen's comments come at a moment when the fate of the troop-training program in Afghanistan is seriously in doubt.

Coward Obama telling Marines to kiss his black ass
U.S. forces resumed joint patrols with their Afghan counterparts, halted after a spike in insider attacks prompted a temporary reevaluation period, only last week.

But in the days since the patrols were resumed, several more suspected insider killings have occurred, including a wild firefight over the weekend between American and Afghan units that left two Americans and five Afghan soldiers dead. The military has called the incident the result of a miscommunication.

On Sunday, the Pentagon formally announced the death of the 2,000th servicemember in the war in Afghanistan, a gruesome benchmark in a conflict that has now lasted 11 years. So far this year, about 1 in 5 combat-related deaths of a U.S. or NATO-allied troop has been at the hands of Afghan friendly fire, according to Reuters.

Last week, a former top defense official who currently advises the campaign of President Barack Obama said that the green-on-blue killings were largely a sign of "Taliban desperation" and a "very occasional" occurrence.

Lawyers for Australian Woman in Bid for Plea Deal

The fact remains that drug offenses in Southeast Asian countries may result in the death penalty and those that choose to risk trafficking know it:  In the meantime, draconian U.S. drug laws forced on these countries - including Indonesia - are resulting in terminally ill patients dying in agony for lack of pain-killing drugs

Sydney Morning Herald
10/01/2012

Kuala Lumpur -

Lawyers for Emma L'Aiguille, the Australian mother of six accused of drug trafficking and facing the death penalty if convicted, have asked the prosecution to drop the charges, promising that she will act as a witness in any related cases.

L'Aiguille made mistake of marrying drug traficker
Ms L'Aiguille, who was arrested in July when police allegedly found more than one kilogram of methamphetamine in the back seat of the car she was driving, made a brief appearance in the Kuala Lumpur Magistrates Court today, when her case was rescheduled for November 9.

Ms L'Aiguille, 34, sobbed as she hugged her mother and sister over the wooden partition that divides the public gallery from the dock where the accused must sit.
Prosecutors had been expected to present a chemist's report today that would confirm the quantity of drugs seized from the car. However, because the report is not yet ready, the case was postponed.

Ms L'Aiguille has been charged under Section 39B of Malaysia's Dangerous Drugs Act, which carries a mandatory death sentence for anyone found in possession of 50 grams or more of methamphetamines.

If the chemist's report confirms that the drugs weigh 50 grams or more, lawyers expect her case will be sent to the Kuala Lumpur High Court for trial.

While old, white men bear the brunt of "sex tourism" (and rightfully so) in many Southeast Asian countries, it is in fact menopausal, self-deluded middle-aged white women that comprise the mainstay for the trade (and is at present "acceptable," or regarded as "cute" in the West,) sometimes marrying drug-dealing pimps who then use them as unwitting  "mules" for drug trafficking; indeed, they should take a deep breath, a good hard look in the mirror and ask themselves who on earth would want to marry an old, fat, sow when there are so many beautiful Asian women available; horror stories regarding these "marriages" abound, are the norm rather than the exception and Nigerians are without a doubt the main offenders in all countries - including Indonesia:  The bottom line is Judges simply do not care - trafficking drugs is the death sentence

Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, Ms L'Aiguille's lead lawyer, said he had written to the prosecution two weeks ago asking for the charges against Ms L'Aiguille to be dropped. He does not expect to hear from the prosecution until they receive the chemist's report.

"She will become a witness for whatever she knows about the matter," he said outside the courtroom.

Is L'Aiguille guilty?  The fact is it does not matter to Judges

Mr Shafee said that, if the case was sent to trial, he was "very confident" that Ms L'Aiguille would be acquitted because she had no knowledge of the drugs.

"In Emma's case, I'm very confident because so far we have found nothing that implicates her," he said.

Guilty or not, the result is the same, regardless
However, he conceded that she was facing "very serious" charges".

"For trafficking the only penalty is death," he said.

Ms L'Aiguille has told her lawyers that her Nigerian boyfriend and another Nigerian man had been in the car, but got out before the police searched the vehicle.

She has not heard from her boyfriend since her arrest and her lawyers have been told that police have so far been unable to find him. Another Nigerian man who was in the car with Ms L'Aiguille has also been charged with trafficking.

"The police must have been observing so it cannot be the case that they never saw the two men leaving the car. I hope they tell the truth and Emma is as good as free," he said, adding that he suspected the other men were the target of a police operation.

Southeast Asian Judges, many still sporting a hangover from colonial days are determined to convict Westerners, are not fooled by and appalled at mixed white-black "marriages" while press coverage demanding they modify their judgements in most cases only makes the situation worse, sometimes throwing the court to the death penalty where otherwise mercy may have been shown

"She happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time."

Ms L'Aiguille, who was handcuffed, dressed in black and pulled a scarf over her head when she entered the courtroom, had lost weight since her last court appearance.

Her sister, Amber Lawn, 33, said when she visited Ms L'Aiguille in prison last week, she was "very depressed and very teary but she looked fine".

Ms L'Aiguille was to meet her family members today before being taken back to Kajang Women's Prison, just outside Kuala Lumpur.

Ms Lawn said her sister had been living in Malaysia for the past two years, and previously worked in Perth as a nurse. She was born in Perth but raised in the Albury-Wodonga area.

Ms L'Aiguille is the second Australian to be charged with drug trafficking in Malaysia this year.

Dominic Bird, 32, was arrested in March after allegedly trying to sell methamphetamine to an undercover police officer. The Perth man is scheduled to face trial in early December.

The last Australian hanged in Malaysia was Sydney man, Michael McAuliffe, who was put to death in 1993. Two other Australians, Kevin Barlow and Brian Chambers, both from Perth, were hanged in 1986. All three had been convicted of drug trafficking.

Afghanistan : Bomber Kills 14 Including 3 U.S. Troops

Obama, Clinton will sit back and let U.S. military personnel bleed to death in a lost illegal war they will pay the price for continuing:  WAR CRIMES TRIALS FOR OBAMA, CLINTON, PANETTA, CIA SCUM BETRAYUS

Associated Press
By Amr Shah and Helen Vogt
10/02/1012

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) —

A suicide bomber driving a motorcycle packed with explosives rammed his bike into a joint Afghan-American patrol on Monday morning in eastern Afghanistan, killing at least 14 people including three U.S. troops and their translator, officials said.

WHO will be the last U.S. military death in illegal Afghan war?
The Taliban claimed responsibility for the blast, which came a day after the U.S. death toll in the war in Afghanistan reached 2,000 troops. Such joint patrols are considered key to the training of Kabul's security forces but have been cut back by a string of insider shootings of international troops by their Afghan allies.

In Monday's attack, the bomber struck a group of Afghan police and American troops shortly after they got out of their vehicles to walk through a market area in Khost city, the capital of Khost province, said provincial government spokesman Baryalai Wakman.

Six civilians and four police officers were killed in the blast, Wakman said. He said the police officers were part of a specialized quick-reaction force.

Blood could be seen on the market road as Afghan police and soldiers tried to clean up the area after the blast. Slippers and bicycle parts were strewn about.

And after racking up a little last-minute slaughter (punishment) Obama will leave Afghan civilians to the tender mercies of the Taliban, who will want a little piece of that revenge for themselves

"I heard the explosion and came right to this area. I saw the dead bodies of policemen and of civilians right here," said policeman Hashmat Khan, who ran to the site of the blast from his job as security for a nearby bank.

Obama has already demonstrated he could care less about deaths
Coalition spokesman Maj. Adam Wojack would only confirm that three NATO service members and their translator died in a bombing in the east on Monday, without giving an exact location or the nationalities of the dead.

The international military alliance usually waits for individual nations to announce details on deaths. Most of the troops in the east and in Khost province are American. The translator was an Afghan citizen, Wojack said.

More than 60 Afghan civilians were also wounded in the bombing, the governor's office said in a statement. The city's hospital alone was treating about 30 people injured in the explosion, said Dr. Amir Pacha, a physician working there. He added there could be other victims being treated at nearby private clinics.

Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said in text messages to media that the insurgent group was behind the attack.

Murdering assholes of a feather:  Bush and Obama have played off the same sheet of music the entire time in Afghanistan and continue to cover for each other

Joint patrols between NATO and Afghan forces have become more limited following a tide of attacks by Afghan soldiers and police on their international allies. Last month, the U.S. military issued new orders that require units to get approval from higher-ups before conducting operations with Afghans. Then, two weeks later, U.S. officials said most missions were being conducted with Afghans again, though the system of approvals has remained in place.

The close contact — coalition forces working side by side with Afghan troops as advisers, mentors and trainers — is a key part of the U.S. strategy for putting the Afghans in the lead as the U.S. and other nations prepare to pull out their last combat troops by the end of 2014.

"And when I am elected (because Romney is a fucking idiot) I promise Americans a (GM) chicken in every pot, and a cheap metal casket in every family plot in every graveyard in America"

But the rising death toll for international troops has increased calls in the U.S. and other allies to get out as soon as possible. On Sunday, a U.S. official confirmed that an American soldier was killed in a firefight that broke out between Afghan and U.S. troops, sparked by either a premeditated attack or confusion about the origins of an insurgent strike.

There are no words in the English language to adequately describe this abomination

According to an Associated Press count, that soldier's death brought American troop deaths in Afghanistan since the 2001 invasion to 2,000 — a cold reminder of the perils that remain after an 11-year conflict. Monday's bombing brought the death toll to 2003.
