New Greek Election as Talks Fail

Sarkozy gone, Merkel is circling the drain; Greece wise to consider bailing from dying EU; phony "austerity" (read theft) unmasked and now being trounced by enraged voters

DEBT-stricken Greece must hold fresh elections after last-ditch talks to form a government collapse

The new election is likely to prolonging a tortuous crisis which could see Athens exit the troubled eurozone.

No more kissy-face for you:  Deposed Sarkozy and Merkel
The new polls, expected on June 17, follow an inconclusive election on May 6 when a majority of Greeks voted against the austerity measures which Athens agreed to in return for a massive EU-IMF bailout late last year.

"We are going again towards elections, in a few days, under very bad conditions," said socialist Pasok party leader Evangelos Venizelos, regretting the fact that there was no accord.

"The Greek people must now make the right decisions for the good of the country," said Mr Venizelos, who supported the rescue deal in a technocrat government formed last November.

A statement from Greece's President Carolos Papoulias's office read on state television noted simply that efforts to form a government had failed and that he would hold talks today with all political parties on setting up a caretaker administration.

With no guarantee that Greece's second elections in less than two months will produce a viable government, the prospects now are for prolonged volatility and uncertainty over its future and that of the wider eurozone.

International Monetary Fund head Christine Lagarde raised the possibility that Greece could leave the currency union.

"If the country's budgetary commitments are not honoured, there are appropriate revisions to do, which means either supplementary financing and additional time or mechanisms for an exit, which in this case must be an orderly exit," MS Lagarde said in an interview with France 24.

Greeks want out of EU, return to Drachma
German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said the collapse of the coalition negotiations was a "severe setback for the urgently needed confidence in Greece's readiness to reform".

Mr Papoulias had called yesterday's meeting after talks on Monday with the conservative New Democracy, Pasok and radical Democratic Left parties failed to reach an accord on a coalition government.

He had suggested that in the absence of any other solution, a government of "distinguished and non-political figures" should be considered to break the impasse over the EU-IMF austerity measures.

Success would have seen a return to the technocrat solution of November when former central banker Lucas Papademos, supported by New Democracy and Pasok, pushed through the 240 billion euro ($307 billion) EU-IMF bailout which staved off Greek bankrupcty.

It would also likely have helped ease strains over Greece's future in the 17-member eurozone but now everything is up in the air again while the economy remains mired in recession for a fifth year.

Figures issued yesterday showed the Greek economy slumped a massive 6.2 per cent in the first quarter compared with a year earlier, driving anger with the austerity policy and reforms.

The response to the talks breakdown on the financial markets was immediate, with European stocks turning lower and the euro slumping below $US1.28.

"Investors are pricing in a Greek exit from monetary union with a risk that it could turn out to be disorderly," said VTB Capital analyst Neil MacKinnon.

Mike McCudden at Interactive Investor said Greece posed a problem of contagion for other weaker eurozone members, namely Spain and Italy, as Europe sees "a general backlash against austerity measures".

The onus is now on new French President Francois Hollande and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who "have around 24 hours to announce a plan which will offer some hope to the markets," Mr McCudden argued.

German has repeatedly insisted there can be no easing of the Greek bailout terms but Mr Hollande won office on a pledge to focus on growth, not austerity.

There can be little doubt about the gravity of the situation both for Greece, if it has to leave the eurozone, and for its partners, who might lose billions in a disorderly withdrawal from the bloc.

France would face a bill of 50 billion euros if Greece were forced to quit, its outgoing Finance Minister Francois Baroin warned.

Charles Dallara, who as head of the Institute of International Finance helped negotiate a private creditor debt write-down for Greece, warned that the cost of failure would be too high to bear.

"I believe that the cost to Greece, the cost to Europe and the cost to the entire global economy may still be enough to cause Greek politicians and European politicians to pause before they pull the trigger on a Greek exit."

Guantanamo, Poetic Justice and Prophetic Judgment

Guantanamo will remain a stain on U.S. government, military for generations to come

World News

The reason why chaos reigned for the five Guantanamo Prison Camp (GPC) suspects charged with the Sept. 11 retaliatory attacks can be found in Sami al Haj's prophetically poetic poem, a Sudanese journalist falsely arrested and tortured at Bagram Air Base before being transferred to GPC. "They have monuments to liberty," wrote Sami al Haj, "and freedom of opinion, which is well and good. But I explained to them that Architecture is not justice. America, you ride on the back of orphans, and terrorize them daily. Bush beware, the world recognizes an arrogant liar."(1)

Guantanamo
Isolated prisoners "inside the wire" evolve from rich Arab and Islamic traditions of political and religious poetries, ones filled with deep human emotions. Psychological tyranny, denial of medical care, endless interrogations, repeated abuses, painful stress positions, sleep deprivation, extremes of heat and cold, and water-boarding have caused dozens to attempt suicide by hanging and slashing wrists, or death through fasts. But through poetry, their sanity and human dignity confronts chaos and indefinite detentions. Their spirits are free in the heavens, while their bodies are overpowered by chains.(2)

Those "inside the wire" reflect poetic justice in the sense that, they mirror America The Oppressed. "Their aim is to worship petty cash, and for it they will break all vows" writes Mohammed el Gharani, a fourteen year-old Chadian and one of the first to be labeled an enemy combatant. "I came to their land to pursue an education, and saw such malice among them." Captured while praying in a mosque, he was then transported in shackles for hours without food and water. Hearing Islam cursed and seeing the Koran destroyed, while being struck with boots, Gharani writes "Their war is against justice and Islam."(3)

NATO complicit in Guantanamo War Crimes
If Mohammed el Gharani's dismantles America's idolatrous myth, one that cages its people by depreciating memory and hope and human dignity and by proclaiming a false liberation and peace and security through war, then Shaikh Abdurraeem Muslim Dost delivers a pre-prophetic judgment. He asks, "Does oppression not demand some reaction against the oppressor?" (Since 2006, he has not been heard from.)(4) America's GPC has made a mockery of Western enlightenment ideas. America is a criminal increasing in crime, a criminal claiming to be peace-loving, a criminal for torturing hunger strikers.(5)

Poetic theater, an alternate language and consciousness and perception, was performed in the imperial courtroom when defendants refused to answer questions. Walid bin Attash, was strapped to a chair after boycotting the tribunals, believing a fair trial was impossible in the midst of a fearful, hysterical and vengeful atmosphere. After having rose suddenly and while guards rushed at him, Ramzi bin al-Shibh knelt on the tribunal floor to pray. "Be generous to others and leave behind your avaricious spirit. If your brother has hurt you recall the good deeds and the pain will go away"(6) is what's on trial and at stake.

Architects of Guantanamo:  Cheney, Bush, Rumsfeld
Poetry is born of immediate suffering. Prophetic words envision a new future, a new Heaven and Earth that dismantles the Old World Order and dominant politics of violence, hatred, retaliation and war. The courage and fortitude of those "inside the wire" point to a radical break with the realities of an American empire, one that mistakenly thinks and believes it can maintain its global hegemony through terror. Their poetic words and prophetic actions are an assault against Empire's consciousness, one that is distorted and seared. "Even if the days in prison endure, there must be a day when we will get out."

Those "inside the wire" are captive, but the crimes are their captors'.(8)

Facebook Co-Founder Renounces U.S. Citizenship

The squeeze on Americans wishing to leave is getting tighter and tighter:  Soon the door to immigration will close as increasing numbers of Americans try to get out with at least some of their money - Hitler did the same thing

The Wall Street Journal

Eduardo Saverin, the Facebook co-founder who gave up his U.S. citizenship, has nothing against the U.S., just its complicated rules on U.S. citizens holding money overseas, a spokesman said.

Mr. Eduardo Saverin
Mr. Saverin, who now lives in Singapore, decided last year to renounce his U.S. citizenship, a decision that was made public a few days ago. The move sparked an outcry among some tax experts who suspect he’s aiming to save on taxes. Although Mr. Saverin will have to pay a hefty exit tax for renouncing his citizenship, based on some calculation of his assets, Singapore is a relatively low-tax jurisdiction, particularly for foreign investors, and does not levy capital gains tax. Thus he could save in the longer term.

In a political environment that’s rife with talk of raising taxes on the wealthy, Mr. Saverin’s case could become another flash point.

Saverin spokesman Tom Goodman said Sunday his renunciation was prompted not by tax considerations but by U.S. rules that make it more difficult for U.S. citizens to live and invest overseas.

“U.S. citizens are severely restricted as to what they can invest in and where they can maintain accounts,” said spokesman Tom Goodman. “Many foreign funds and banks won’t accept Americans. This was a financial rather than a tax motive.”

It’s true many U.S. expats complain that American rules are making life more difficult for them. Those include the U.S. tax system’s global reach (many countries tax based on residency); foreign bank account reporting rules; and the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA), which requires foreign financial institutions to start reporting to the IRS on U.S. citizens’ accounts.

Expats say as a result of all the regulations, some foreign banks are dumping more U.S. customers. Mr. Goodman also cited FATCA, among other rules, as a problem for Mr. Saverin.

Treasury Department officials say they don’t see evidence of a systemic problem for Americans living abroad arising from FATCA. People as wealthy as Mr. Saverin tend to have an easier time untangling red tape than the average U.S. retiree living abroad.

The spokesman said Mr. Saverin plans to continue to invest in tech companies around the world, including the U.S.

“His decision had nothing to do with dissatisfaction here, but with his strong desire to do business there,” Mr. Goodman said. He also plans a charitable foundation.

We have already discussed in the first part of this analysis how the American geography dooms whoever controls the territory to being a global power, but there are a number of other outcomes that shape what that power will be like. The first and most critical is the impact of that geography on the American mindset.
