BREAKING : 6.1-Magnitude Quake Strikes Indonesia

Damage reports (if any) should be coming in shortly

New Zeland Herald
Agence France-Presse
04/21/2012

A strong 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck off Indonesia's Sumatra island, the US Geological Survey said, but no tsunami warning was issued.

The quake struck at 5.14 am (local time) at a depth of about 34 kilometres, 427 km southwest of Banda Aceh on the northern tip of Sumatra. There were no immediate reports of damage.

Aceh province was shaken earlier this month by two huge earthquakes, triggering an Indian Ocean-wide tsunami alert.

At a magnitude of 8.6, the first of the two quakes was the strongest to hit since the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami that killed 170,000 in Aceh. No major damage was reported.

World's Richest Worth $1 Trillion on Billionaires Index

What in the hell do you do with one trillion dollars while homeless people starve on the mean streets of the world's Capital cities

Bloomburg
By Alexander Cuadros and Devon Pendleton
04/18/2012

The 40 richest individuals on Earth lost a combined $6.2 billion yesterday as stocks dropped amid disappointing U.S. earnings, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, a daily ranking of the wealthiest people.

Filthy-rich Richard Branson, owner of Virgin Air
Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal joined the index, which doubled the number of billionaires it tracks yesterday. Alwaleed's fortune has increased 18.2 percent, or $3.2 billion, this year, as shares of his Kingdom Holding Co. (KINGDOM), a diversified investment group that is planning to build the world's tallest tower, rose 36 percent. The 57-year-old ranks 24th on the index with a net worth of $20.5 billion.

"There is no secret to success," Alwaleed said in an e-mail sent from Saudi Arabia. "It is based on a sound investment strategy, commitment and long-term vision."

The Bloomberg Billionaires Index takes measure of the world's wealthiest people based on market and economic changes and Bloomberg News reporting. Each net worth figure is updated every business day at 5:30 p.m. in New York. The valuations are listed in U.S. dollars.

The expanded list was published with the release of new billionaires profile pages in the Bloomberg Professional service. The profiles feature a transparent analysis of how each billionaire's fortune was calculated.

Alwaleed's fortune makes him richer than Google Inc. co- founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin. Page ranks in 29th place with $18.9 billion, while Brin ranks 32nd on the list compiled by Bloomberg News. He is worth $18.7 billion.

Buffett, Zuckerberg

The combined wealth of the index is $1.1 trillion. The 40 billionaires have gained a combined $88.2 billion since the beginning of the year.

War Criminal former and former U.S. President George W. Bush accomplished his mission:  Starting two illegal wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, enriching his corporate masters and himself becoming one of the richest men in the world in the process

Mexican telecommunications magnate Carlos Slim, 72, remains the richest person in the world, with a fortune of $68.8 billion, down $572.3 million for the day. Second is Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) co-founder Bill Gates, 56, with $62.7 billion, followed by Warren Buffett, who's worth $44.6 billion.

Buffett, 81, the chairman of Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (BRK/A), said in an April 17 letter to investors that he has been diagnosed with stage 1 prostate cancer that is "not remotely life threatening."

Mark Zuckerberg, the 27-year-old founder of Facebook Inc. (FB), the world's largest social-networking company, is 25th on the ranking. Based on a roughly $100 billion valuation the Menlo Park, California-based company was trading at in the private market when it ceased trading April 3, Zuckerberg may be worth $20.5 billion, or about 25 percent less than previous estimates, once Facebook holds its initial public offering.

Tax Obligations

The reason: Facebook will issue more than 500 million shares of its Class B stock at the offering, diluting Zuckerberg's ownership to 21 percent after he exercises 120 million options and sells about 42 million shares to cover the tax bill associated with the gain from those options.

Lee Shau Kee, who has said he would swap 99 percent of his wealth for 30 years of time, ranks 26th in the world and second in Hong Kong with a net worth of $19.8 billion. Lee, 84, has gained $2.6 billion this year after shares of Henderson Land Development Co., the developer he founded, rose 17 percent.

Cheng Yu Tung, the third-richest person in Hong Kong, has a net worth of $18.8 billion. The owner of Chow Tai Fook Jewellery Group Ltd. (1929) and property company New World Development Co. Ltd., 60, is ranked 30th in the world. His net worth is down 6.2 percent so far this year.

India, Australia

Lakshmi Mittal, the India-born chairman of ArcelorMittal (MT), the world's biggest steelmaker, is in 28th place with $19 billion. In addition to his 41 percent stake in ArcelorMittal, the 61-year-old London resident owns hundreds of millions of dollars in U.K. real estate.

Gina Rinehart, the Australian mining heiress, is worth $18.7 billion, putting her in 31st place on the index. Rinehart, 58, the daughter of the man who discovered the mines that made Australia the world's biggest iron ore exporter, owns perpetual royalty rights to some of Rio Tinto Ltd. (RIO)'s Hamersley mines in addition to other iron-ore and thermal coal deposits throughout the country.

Three of her four children have taken legal action in an effort to remove her as guardian of the family trust. Last month, she lost a bid to keep details of the family litigation private. Newly released documents indicate her four children may have a stake worth as much as $4.7 billion in the trust.

Li Ka-shing, 83, ranks as the richest person in Asia with a net worth of $23.9 billion.

Usmanov Tops Akhmetov

Ukrainian tycoon Rinat Akhmetov, 45, ranks 36th. His $18 billion fortune is derived from closely held metallurgy, mining and energy holdings owned through System Capital Management JSC. In government auctions held between November 2011 and March 2012, Akhmetov's DTEK Holdings Ltd. acquired control of significant Ukrainian state coal and energy assets at prices that helped push up his net worth up by more than $3.5 billion since the auctions began.

Alisher Usmanov, the 58-year-old Muscovite who controls the Metalloinvest metals and mining company and Digital Sky Technologies, became Russia's richest person after lucrative technology investments in Facebook, Groupon and Zynga pushed his fortune to $19 billion, up $1.6 billion this year.

The second wealthiest person in Russia is Gennady Timchenko, who controls a portfolio of international energy and oil trading assets, the largest of which is a 45 percent stake in Gunvor Group Ltd. Timchenko, worth $17.9 billion, became acquainted with Russian President-elect Vladimir Putin in the early 1990s when Putin was serving as deputy mayor of St. Petersburg -- and as chairman of a judo club Timchenko founded.

Chocolate Empire

Michele Ferrero, who owns the closely held Ferrero SpA chocolate empire, is Italy's richest citizen with $21.9 billion. Since 1949, he has been the family leader of the global chocolate and confectionery company that makes Nutella, Tic Tac and Ferrero Rocher.

Alberto Bailleres, the second-richest man in Mexico behind Slim, is worth $18.5 billion. His net worth has soared $1.3 billion this year. While his most-valuable asset, Industrias Penoles SAB, Mexico's largest silver producer and a miner of gold, has only gained 1 percent in 2012, Bailleres, 80, has benefited from a strengthening currency. The Mexican peso is the best performer among major currencies this year, up 5.7 percent against the dollar.

Iris Fontbona, the matriarch of Chile's richest family, ranks 34th. Fontbona, her three children and two heirs from the late Andronico Luksic's previous marriage, control a combined fortune of $18.4 billion. The family owns copper producer Antofagasta Plc (ANTO) and, through holding company Quinenco SA (QUINENC), interests in banking, beer and shipping.

40th Place

Jorge Paulo Lemann is the second-richest man in Brazil with a net worth of $15.9 billion. He ranks last on the ranking.

The 72-year-old tripled his latest investment after he and his partners at 3G Capital Inc. sold a 29 percent stake in Burger King Holdings Inc. this month for $1.4 billion, valuing the fast-food chain at $4.8 billion. As part of their 2010 leveraged buyout, 3G put up $1.5 billion in equity and loaded at least $2.5 billion of debt onto the company's balance sheet.

Carl Icahn didn't make the cut. The activist investor, 76, has a net worth of $15.6 billion based mostly on his stakes in Icahn Holdings, a hedge fund he closed to outside investors in 2011, and publicly traded Icahn Enterprises LP. (IEP)

Icahn last week sued Amylin Pharmaceuticals Inc., in which he is the third-largest shareholder, demanding records related to a $3.5 billion takeover offer by Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. as he seeks to start a proxy fight against Amylin's board.

Ricardo Salinas, 56, also fell short. His stake in Grupo Elektra SA plunged 25 percent in the past week, leaving him with a net worth of $15.8 billion. The retail and banking conglomerate posted its biggest two-day drop since at least 1994 as new Mexican stock-exchange rules threaten to cut the company's weight in the benchmark index.

George Zimmerman Apologizes to Trayvon Martin’s Family, Could be Released from Jail Soon : Video

This is a sad case and a sad commentary on what America has become; Obama burned again for jumping the gun for political gain; bottom line is that the "mainstream media" lied - let's see what they have to say now and where this case winds up*

The Lookout
By Jason Sickles

Updated at 2:10 p.m. ET

Accused Florida murderer George Zimmerman will be allowed to go free on bail after a dramatic two-hour hearing in which he took the stand and apologized for gunning down Trayvon Martin, an unarmed 17-year-old.

Zimmerman at hearing
"I wanted to say I am sorry for the loss of your son," a stoic Zimmerman said in his first public statements about the death. "I did not know how old he was. I thought he was a little bit younger than I am. I did not know if he was armed or not."

After the hearing, attorneys for Martin's parents said the apology was disingenuous, the Associated Press reported.

Circuit Judge Kenneth Lester ordered Zimmerman to remain in jail for at least another day, but he could be released while awaiting trial if his family posts a $150,000 bail. Prosecutors who charged the now-infamous neighborhood watchman with second-degree murder lost their argument that he not be freed or that the bail be set at $1 million.

Zimmerman's attorney said after the hearing that it could take the suspect's family more than a day to come up with the funds. But once released, Zimmerman may be allowed to leave Florida if electronic monitoring can be established with officers responsible for tracking his whereabouts. His attorney argued that Zimmerman's location needs to remain a secret due to threats against him.

Other conditions of his release include no contact with Martin's family and no possessing a firearm.

The gunman's parents, who testified by phone because they fear for their safety, told the court their son would not be a flight risk or a threat to the community.

"I've never known him to be violent at all unless he was provoked and then he would turn the other cheek," his father, Robert Zimmerman, told defense attorney Mark O'Mara.

But that's not the Zimmerman being portrayed by Florida prosecutors. They allege the 28-year-old volunteer watchman with a license to carry a gun disobeyed a 911 operator and continued to trail the black teen through his gated Sanford, Fla., neighborhood. Zimmerman, who told police he thought Martin looked suspicious, says he was attacked and shot the teen in self-defense.

Robert Zimmerman testified he saw his son's wounds the day after the Feb. 26 altercation and shooting.

"His face was swollen quite a bit," his father said. "He had a protective cover over his nose. His lip was swollen and cut. And there were two vertical gashes on the back of his head."

Zimmerman was not arrested for 44 days, sparking an uproar about racial profiling and justice in the United States.

In court on Friday, Zimmerman wore a charcoal suit, white shirt and gray tie. He was shackled and may have had on a bulletproof vest, according to the Associated Press. If convicted, he faces life in prison.

O'Mara, his defense attorney, used part of the hearing to try to pick apart the prosecution's probable cause argument for arresting Zimmerman. He repeatedly quizzed state investigator Dale Gilbreath on who may have thrown the first punch.

"Do you have any evidence that supports who may have started the fight?" O'Mara asked.

"No," Gilbreath said.

Misinformation Campaign Targets USA TODAY Reporter, Editor

"Mainstream media" now getting a taste of what Independent Media has been hit with; a solid reminder that anything - anything - may be manipulated, people impersonated on the Internet

USA Today
By George Korte
04/20/20012

WASHINGTON –

A USA TODAY reporter and editor investigating Pentagon propaganda contractors have themselves been subjected to a propaganda campaign of sorts, waged on the Internet through a series of bogus websites.

Panetta having heart attack over being busted for
$860,000.00 he stole from taxpayers
Fake Twitter and Facebook accounts have been created in their names, along with a Wikipedia entry and dozens of message board postings and blog comments. Websites were registered in their names.

The timeline of the activity tracks USA TODAY's reporting on the military's "information operations" program, which spent hundreds of millions of dollars on marketing campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan — campaigns that have been criticized even within the Pentagon as ineffective and poorly monitored.

For example, Internet domain registries show the website TomVandenBrook.com was created Jan. 7 — just days after Pentagon reporter Tom Vanden Brook first contacted Pentagon contractors involved in the program. Two weeks after his editor Ray Locker's byline appeared on a story, someone created a similar site, RayLocker.com, through the same company.

The CIA has operated domestically against Americans for decades
If the websites were created using federal funds, it could violate federal law prohibiting the production of propaganda for domestic consumption. "We're not aware of any such activities, nor would it be acceptable," said Lt. Col. James Gregory, a Pentagon spokesman. A Pentagon official confirmed that the military had made inquiries to information operations contractors to ask them about the Internet activity.

All denied it, said the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the inquiries were informal and did not amount to an official investigation.

The websites were taken down following those inquiries. Various other sites and accounts were removed for violating their providers' terms of service.

The NSA: Domestic Enemy of all patriotic Americans
"I find it creepy and cowardly that somebody would hide behind my name and presumably make up other names in an attempt to undermine my credibility," Vanden Brook said. The activity is the work of what online reputation expert Andy Beal calls a 'determined detractor.' "It's like a machine gun approach. They're trying to generate as much online content as they can," he said. "

"The person who's behind this, we can give them a lot of credit here and assume they're very sophisticated about reputation attacks."

It can cost $10 to register a domain name, but $50 to pay for a proxy service to hide the owner's identity, as was done with two of the websites. A third was registered to a non-existent address in Pueblo, Colo.

"This is the work of somebody who knows what they're doing. They have some experience of covering their tracks. This is probably not the first time they've done something like this," said Beal, CEO of Trackur, an online reputation tracking service.

Some postings merely copied Vanden Brook's and Locker's previous reporting. Others accused them of being sponsored by the Taliban. "They disputed nothing factual in the story about information operations," Vanden Brook said.

DoD under Panetta now playing Bush/Cheney/Rove games
On Feb. 8, as Vanden Brook continued to ask questions of contractors, a new Wikipedia user attempted to create an entry on him, alleging he "gained worldwide notoriety" for his "misreporting" of the 2006 Sago Mine disaster in West Virginia. Early reports from the scene, relying on faulty information from the governor and mine operators — said 12 of 13 miners were found alive, when in fact only one was.

Many news outlets — including the Associated Press, The New York Times and USA TODAY — conveyed the inaccurate reports in early editions.

Wikipedia took down the page and banned the user, but similar comments started populating Internet message boards and blogs. In one case, the fake @Tomvandenbrook Twitter account defended his Sago reporting to another apparently fake account.

Vanden Brook said he's continuing to pursue the propaganda story. "If they thought it would deter me from writing about this, they're wrong."

"This is a clear attempt at intimidation that has failed," Locker said.

SITE PROBLEMS : COMPUTER SECURITY ADVISORY

We are experiencing temporary problems with our layout, seems the provider made a design switch and didn't bother to let us know.  The navbar has been inactivated and we are endeavoring to fix it, we will also take the time now to make some updates on the design.

This is a good time to remind readers to up their security.  While perusing the net to find some way of preventing our system - which has had several major attacks - from being turned into a bot and spewing out porn we ran across the below listed program, and are providing partial list of what we use.   Most programs are free and at least provide a modicum of safety from this kind of nefarious event occurring, first is the Cloud-based OpenDNS:

http://www.opendns.com/

And we also recommend CSID:

http://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20111229005085/en/Stratfor-Moves-Assist-Customers-Victimized-Security-Breach

We also use Viper:

http://www.vipreantivirus.com/Antivirus-Trial/

And our firewall (one of them anyways) is Zonealarm:

http://www.zonealarm.com/

Remember, the bastards that are breaking into your system don't play by any rules and they are playing for keeps, so give them no quarter when discovered.  The best poison for them is PUBLIC EXPOSURE.  How you deal with them, however, is up to you.  We choose direct, public confrontation and if we are hit again you will surely hear about it.

A few basics we had to learn the hard way:

Close all ports unless you designate otherwise.

Change your passwords on a regular basis.

Do not open unfamiliar e-mail and definitely no attachments.

Max your firewall settings in accordance with your allowable operational capabilities.

Give us 24 hours and we will be back up to speed.  We will continue to publish without the navbar.

In the meantime, here is an Internet security video from STRATFOR's chief of security Bill Burton.
