MCRP 3-02H - Multi-service military manual on PROCEDURES FOR SURVIVAL, EVASION, AND RECOVERY

An insurance policy for you and your family

The 5th Estate
By Robert S. Finnegan

As with the USMC Winter Survival Manual, this publication is the Cadillac of post-collapse insurance policies.  It is also too large to post here so here is the PDF:

http://www.equipped.com/multiservice_ser_manual_1999.pdf

And no, you are not overly paranoid - oddly enough becoming a virtue now - or a doomsdayer fruitcake.
You are simply looking out for yourself and family.

So, blow-off the naysayers and attain some peace of mind by educating yourself in how to survive should things get very bad in the U.S. and for that matter around the World.  I despise writing about this crap and hope to be seriously wrong, but the signs are pointing to something giving in the ripped, moth-eaten tapestry of what was once America.

A good stiff wind (economic, another illegal "war") would blow the U.S. over right now.  If things go bad in the Persian Gulf gasoline will be to expensive to afford.... that's when the wheels will come off.

Thought might be given to printing a hard copy, you never know if there is going to be electricity or the Net.  Most systems in the U.S. are not hardened and an EMP would melt of lot of computers, so hauling around a certain amount of paper is going to be a necessity and a hedge against "advanced" technology that will fail when you need it most.  The good news is that it's free and Americans are free to access it.

That may change in the near future, and not just in America.

IMPROVISE, ADAPT, OVERCOME.

Hezbollah Identifies Undercover CIA Officers

CIA idiots finding out that it's not cool to try out Rove, Bush, and Cheney's "hide in plain sight; " Lebanon repeats history yet again with foreign interventionists, soon-to-be dead Americans

Associated Press
By Adam Goldman
12/13/2011

WASHINGTON (AP) —

The militant group Hezbollah has revealed the identities of CIA officers working undercover in Lebanon, a blow to agency operations in the region and the latest salvo in an escalating spy war.

Hezbollah made the names public in a broadcast Friday night on a Lebanese television station, al-Manar. Using animated videos, the station recreated meetings purported to take place between CIA officers and paid informants at Starbucks and Pizza Hut.

Regan presided over the deaths of at least 220 Marines in Lebanon
The disclosure comes after Hezbollah managed to partially unravel the agency's spy network in Lebanon after running a double agent against the CIA, former and current U.S. intelligence officials said. They requested anonymity to discuss matters of intelligence.

In June, Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah bragged that his group had identified at least two spies working for the CIA. It is not clear whether one of those spies was, in fact, the same double agent working for Hezbollah, which is considered a terrorist group by the U.S. Nasrallah has called the U.S. Embassy in Beirut a "den of spies."

The fiasco happened despite top CIA officials being warned to be extra careful when handling informants after Hezbollah and Lebanese officials arrested scores of Israeli spies in 2009.

Oct. 23, 1983:  Marines pull dead Brothers from barracks
The outing of the officers is particularly damaging because it will hinder the ability of these CIA employees to work overseas again — especially in the Internet age where references to their names will be widely available to other foreign intelligence agencies.

The CIA dismissed Hezbollah's assertions.

"The agency does not, as a rule, address spurious claims from terrorist groups," CIA spokeswoman Jennifer Youngblood said. "I think it's worth remembering that Hezbollah is a dangerous organization, with al-Manar as its propaganda arm. That fact alone should cast some doubt on the credibility of the group's claims."

Former officials said one of the named officers was considered a rising star at the CIA and had been involved in many important operations in Iraq. Whether or not this employee would be able to continue a CIA career outside the U.S. is unknown. Former officials said it is likely Hezbollah has already shared photographs of the case officers with Iran, its closest ally.

It was not immediately clear whether the exposed CIA officers in Lebanon have been pulled out of the country.

Tortured to death:  CIA's Buckley
Revealing the identities of CIA officers has happened in the past. The last instance came about one year ago when the name of the CIA's Pakistan station chief was leaked to reporters there. The CIA initially let him stay but eventually decided it was too dangerous for him to remain in the country.

Case officers met with informants at locations more than once, a practice frowned upon because it risks their exposure.

The disclosure indicates that Hezbollah is sending a sharp message to the CIA to stay out of Lebanon, suggesting that it could have captured the CIA officers at any time since it knew their identities. In 1984, Hezbollah kidnapped the CIA station chief in Beirut. He was tortured and later killed.

Al-Manar said the CIA team in Lebanon consisted of 10 officers and all used diplomat cover. The station said their jobs were to oversee intelligence networks in Lebanon.

Obama, CIA want "their" drone back from Iran

Pathetic: delusional Obama and his drugged-out, spasmodic CIA whine, demand drone back from Iran despite committing act of war with it

Press TV
12/12/2011

Following days of silence on the American spy drone captured and unveiled by Iranian armed forces, US President Barack Obama says Washington has asked Tehran to return the US reconnaissance drone.

“We've asked for it back. We'll see how the Iranians respond,” Obama said in a news conference with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki on Monday.

Iranian Republican Guards inspect captured U.S. drone
The plea comes as the US and CIA refused to adopt an official position after Iran aired footage of the captured unmanned aerial vehicle on December 8.

The US RQ-170 Sentinel stealth aircraft was brought down with minimal damage by the Iranian Army's electronic warfare unit on Sunday, December 4, 2011, when flying over the northeastern Iran city of Kashmar, some 225 kilometers (140 miles) away from the Afghan border.

On December 6, two US officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed to CNN that the drone was part of a CIA reconnaissance mission, involving the US intelligence community stationed in Afghanistan.

They claimed the reconnaissance capability of the RQ-170 Sentinel drone enabled it to gather information from inside Iran by flying along Afghanistan's border with the Islamic Republic.

The RQ-170 is an unmanned stealth aircraft designed and developed by the Lockheed Martin Company.

Iran has announced that it intends to carry out reverse engineering on the aircraft, which is similar in design to a US Air Force B2 stealth bomber.

CIA's RQ-170 drone; Iran has not intentions of giving it back
Tehran says that the US drone spy mission was a “hostile act,” adding that it will lodge a complaint with the United Nations over the violation of its air sovereignty by the intelligence gathering aircraft.

Iranian Ambassador to the United Nations Mohammad Khazaei on December 8 called on the world body to condemn US aggressive moves against the Islamic Republic with respect to the reconnaissance drone that violated the Iranian airspace.

He made the plea in a letter sent to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, General Assembly President Nassir Abdulaziz a-Nasser, and Vitaly Churkin, Russia's UN ambassador who holds the rotating Security Council presidency for December.

Meanwhile, Iran's Foreign Ministry has summoned the Swiss ambassador, who represents US interests in the country, and the Afghan ambassador to condemn the US violation of Iranian airspace.

Hundreds of US-NATO Soldiers Arrive and Begin Operations on the Jordan-Syria Border

It will be interesting to see American sheep attempt to display shock, disbelief when Americans begin dying again in this new Obama/Clinton illegal war; where is congress and JCS

Global Research
12/12/2011

Update 1: Today at 12:00 P.M. we contacted DOD Press Office via two voicemail messages and one e-mail asking for comment(s) on this story. As of 6:00 P.M. EST we have not heard back.

Update 2: Another journalist with a major mainstream media publication was told by his editors that there would be no coverage or follow up on these developments.

According to first-hand accounts and reports provided to Global Research by several sources in Jordan, during the last few hours foreign military groups, estimated at hundreds of individuals, began to spread near the villages of the north-Jordan city of “Al-Mafraq”, which is adjacent to the Jordanian and Syrian border.

According to one Jordanian military officer who asked to remain anonymous, hundreds of soldiers who speak languages other than Arabic were seen during the past two days in those areas moving back and forth in military vehicles between the King Hussein Air Base of al-Mafraq (10 km from the Syrian border), and the vicinity of Jordanian villages adjacent to the Syrian border, such as village Albaej (5 km from the border), the area around the dam of Sarhan, the villages of Zubaydiah and al-Nahdah adjacent to the Syrian border.

Another report received from our source in Amman identified an additional US-NATO Command Center in “al-Houshah,’ a village near Mafraq.

Our Iraqi journalist source in London provided us with the following related information:

“Some of the US forces that left the Ain al-Assad Air base in Iraq last Thursday, did not come back to the USA or its base in Germany, but were transferred to Jordan during the evening hours.”

The above information was further corroborated by our correspondent and advisor Nizar Nayouf who interviewed an employee in the London-based office of Royal Jordanian Airlines:

“At least one US aircraft carrying military personnel landed in the Prince Hassan Air base located about 100 km to the east of the city of Al-Mafraq.”

Earlier last week, Jordanian news websites disclosed that “Western officials have requested the King to allow establishing an electronic spy station in the north of Jordan (near the Syrian border) in order to access the Syrian army and contact Syrian high-rank officers for convincing them to make a military coup or (at least) rebel against the regime”.

Abdullah making fatal mistake allowing U.S. passage
Nizar Nayouf, BFP advisor and correspondent on Syria in London, had the following statement on Al-Mafraq:

“The al-Mafraq air base, which now includes Air Force Academy, was a starting point for “conspiratorial activities” by Jordan, The UK and Israel against Syria in the past, particularly in the 1960s. In September 1968, a Syrian commando Major, Salim Hatoom, who fled to Jordan with a number of officers after a failed coup attempt, established a camp from which he started a rebel military against the then left-wing government of Syria under president Nureddin al-Atassi and Salah Jadid. By the end of 1970s and early 1980s, the Syrian Islamic Brotherhood and their military wing “At-Taleeah al-Islamiyyah al-Muqatilah” (the Islamic Militant Vanguard) used the same base for its military struggle against president Hafez a-Assad regime, in which they were being trained by the Jordanian and Israeli intelligence agents, and cars were being bombed before they were sent to the streets of Syrian cities for the killing of innocents and undermining state facilities.”

Mr. Nayouf went on to emphasize the irony of the situation:

“I guess history repeats itself but as farce…Last spring, that tens of Syrian soldiers, who fled to Jordan, were transferred to a camp west of the Jordanian city of “Salt”, in which officers from Israeli military intelligence (AMAN) began the investigation with them under the supervision of the Jordanian military intelligence. This was to extract information from them on issues related to the development of the Syrian army, weapons and training, especially after 2006.”

OWS and Its Battle With MacArthurism

OWS lacks leadership to persevere; now being ripped to shreds by elitists and criminal cops

World News
By Dallas Darling
12/11/2011

Just like Occupy Wall Street protesters and the soon approaching 2012 new year, eighty years ago battle lines were also drawn between Bonus Army marchers and the powers residing in Washington DC and Wall Street. Thirty-thousand World War One veterans had descended upon the nation's Capitol requesting their $250 bonuses for having fought in the Great War. (According to then-President Woodrow Wilson, it was a war that had made America safe for democracy.) However, Congress and President Herbert Hoover refused to meet with the hungry and unemployed marchers, let alone grant their bonuses.

Veteran Bonus occupiers in Washington
Therefore, a contingent of veterans occupied and camped on a small portion of land near the Capitol. President Hoover considered the squalid shantytown, filled with veterans and their poor families, an eyesore and embarrassment, even a disgrace. Congress and Wall Street associated many of them with radical communists and revolutionaries wanting to overthrow the government. After several months of peaceful marches filled with patriotic songs, President Hoover called on General Douglas MacArthur to clear the Bonus Marchers from several abandoned government buildings where they were living.

Although the War Department accounted for the largest chunk in the national budget,(1) Chief of Staff General MacArthur, a career-minded military officer and politician, resented how the stock market crash and Great Depression had prevented an increase in funding for America's armed forces. And when MacArthur was not fighting to protect and fund his army, he was fighting to control the public's imagination. Like others in the conservative War Department, General MacArthur regarded protesters across America threats to the national security, calling them Communists and anarchists, both reprehensible scourges.(2)

Traitor:  Douglas MacArthur attacked Bonus occupiers
Years earlier, General MacArthur had opposed the Geneva Convention and Washington Naval Conference's disarmament treaties, viewing them as "pacifist" movements and a national threat. When addressing the graduating class at the University of Pittsburgh, he seized the occasion to argue that demonstrators protesting the government's ineffectual responses to the spreading Depression were "organizing the forces of unrest and undermining the morals of the working man." Students that jeered were arrested. The university apologized and announced incoming freshmen would sign loyalty oaths.(3)

Upon receiving orders from President Hoover, General MacArthur saw an opportunity to use his army in a spectacular manner against Bonus Army occupiers. Even though a Veterans Administration survey showed that 94 percent of the Bonus Army marchers had army or navy records, 67 percent had served overseas and 20 percent had been disabled, General MacArthur refused to believe it. He thought 90 percent of them were fakes and wrote their ranks "were swollen with criminals, men with prison records for such crimes as murder, manslaughter, rape, robbery, burglary, blackmails, and assault."(3).

General MacArthur never changed his mind about the protesters, but he did claim to have captured a secret document disclosing a secret Communist plan. It covered such details as the public trial and hanging in front of the Capitol of high government officials, and at the very top of the list was the name of Army Chief of Staff MacArthur.(4) The secret document, leaked to the media, was a fake. The Bonus Army marchers were only hungry for food and justice and dignity. Meanwhile, General MacArthur believed a commander must protect his image at all costs and must never admit his wrongs.(5)

General MacArthur falsely believed there was an "incipient revolution in the air" and informed his officers that he was "going to break the back" of the Bonus Army.(6) He also wanted to dramatically use his army to justify the need to Congress to increase its funding. General MacArthur gave the orders to march and while the last cavalry charge on U.S. soil was trampling veterans, tanks were dismantling and burning down the protesters squalid encampment. General MacArthur's shock and awe campaign killed three veterans and a veteran's wife. A boy was bayoneted. A 9-month-old baby suffocated in the flames.

MacArthur's army troops attack Bonus occupiers
Today, OWS protesters are still battling MacArthurism. MacArthurism is local, state and national security forces using dramatic displays of militancy against peaceful activists-like beatings, pepper-spray, destroying encampments, caging protesters for hours without food and water-mainly to justify their massive budget expenditures and to propagate the need for more police forces, more training, and more advanced weaponry. It is an opportunity for militant and career-minded leaders to achieve new goals to fund more jails and prisons, and to push through new legislation to militarize courts while repressing peaceful dissent.

MacArthurism is violent bureaucracies that rationalize and justify disproportionate uses of force. While concentrating power and weapons in the hands of the capital-rich Few and their security forces, it dis-empowers regional and local working-class movements. It also enriches corporate armament industries and their media empires. Repeated images usually portray peaceful protesters negatively. Seldom are their voices aired. Instead, viewers are fed a steady diet of leaders and their emotional warnings that protesters are radicals, socialists, terrorists, or anarchists, and that they need to "take a bath" and "get a job."

Coward MacArthur attacks occupiers with tanks and cavalry
But with 26 million unemployed Americans, jobs are scarce, as is national unity. Just as MacArthurism can break nations by misappropriating and wasting funds on needless military expenditures, when intermingled with hyper-police forces, it can destroy local communities. Overtime, distrust and insecurity among the poor and working-classes builds against the rapid growth of government policing. Mixed with over-taxation and an increase in economic disparity, minor and major revolutions or acts of sabotage occur. They are displayed through criminal activities or attacking the state and its armed forces.

As modern-day MacArthurism engages in more costly security measures at home and more deadly wars abroad, and as it commits more absurd and violent acts against peaceful protesters and foreign citiznes, its capacity to provide stability and democracy will end. During economic crises, the best way to maintain a nation and to protect state freedoms is always to provide employment opportunities while rejecting empire building and hyper-militarism. The best way to build safe and democratic communities is always through educational and public works programs while dismantling hyper-security forces.

President Franklin D. Roosevelt claimed that General MacArthur, who exceeded his orders, was "one of the two most dangerous men in the country."(7) President Roosevelt understood that an engaged workforce, like the OWS protesters, was more productive and liberating than military and security forces or a rogue general. Workers and protesters should have a higher degree of patriotic fever than MacArthurism, which is one of the two most dangerous ideologies in the country. The other most dangerous American ideology is passive and disengaged citizenry. Is it not time, then, for citizens to exceed their orders?

"Dugout Doug" fled in face of enemy
Today, Monday, December 12, the Occupy Wall Street groups in California, Oregon and Washington state are taking action against the 1% owners and the global economy by committing to a general strike to shut down West Coast ports. In "Counterpunch," Steve Stallone, Secretary of Pacific Media Workers Guild, writes: "They hope to amass picket demonstration so large that dockworkers of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU), long live the radical labor vanguard of the West, will invoke the part of their contract allowing them not to cross the line because it is a health and safety risk."

Mr. Stallone also believes the Shut Down Wall Street on the Waterfront movement "...could signal a new direction for the Occupy movement: engaging in mass direct actions outside of established institutions to both support local labor practices and strike at the heart of the global economic apparatus." The ILWU has also been on the forefront of improving workers rights and preventing deadly military equipment and weapons from reaching dictatorial regimes around the world. Please show your support and solidarity for this historic movement and general strike.)(8)

WAYNE MADSEN REPORT : Giffords, Roll Hit a Planned Twin Assassination

The CIA cannot survive without it's drug running and child trafficking

Wayne Madsen Report
By Wayne Madsen
12/11/2011

Wayne Madsen
Aknowledgeable federal government counter-narcotics source in Arizona has revealed to WMR that the shooting on January 8 this year of U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords and U.S. Judge John Roll in Tucson was planned as a twin assassination of two individuals who threatened to expose a weapons-for-drugs smuggling operation carried out by a covert group working under the aegis of the Central Intelligence Agency and Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano. In fact, the covert operation dates back to when Napolitano was governor of Arizona. Roll had been Chief Judge of the District of Arizona since 2006. The assassin, Jared Lee Loughner, killed five others and wounded thirteen, including Giffords, at a Safeway parking lot in north Tucson. Loughner's first and priority targets were Roll and Giffords.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano
WMR has also been told that while the U.S.-Mexican border operation oversees the smuggling to Mexican drug cartels of weapons, including fully automatic AK-47s, in return for drugs smuggled across the border, mostly delivered by airplanes that make clandestine drops on pre-approved drop zones or landing strips in Arizona, New Mexico, and west Texas, at night, it is only peripherally connected to the "Fast and Furious" operation. Our source said that there were so many weapons being smuggled across the border that some were dropped, including a new AK-47 that was found in a wash on the Arizona side of the border. When the discoverer of the weapon contacted federal authorities about his find, he was told to keep the weapon since there were so many in the area. The "area" in question is said to be a special zone created by Napolitano when she was governor and that the special operations carried out there involve a number of "former" CIA, Navy SEALS, and other Special Operations personnel.

BATF "OPERATION GUNRUNNER"
Operation Fast and Furious was a weapons tracking program conducted by the Justice Department's Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. In what is known as "gun walking," agents permitted the sale to Mexican cartels of weapons obtained from Phoenix area gun stores in order to identify the major weapons traffickers on the U.S. and Mexican side of the border. However, Fast and Furious soon allowed for some 2,000 weapons purchased in the United States to end up in the hands of drug cartels. Two of the weapons were later used to kill U.S. Border Patrol agent Brian Terry on the U.S. side of the border.

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder
House Republicans are calling for Attorney General Eric Holder to fire all those involved with Fast and Furious, something he has refused to do in a wholesale manner. Holder claims Fast and Furious was a "regional" operation and that little direction came from Washington. Holder, we are told, is not being forthcoming because of the possibility that the more secretive weapons-for-narcotics operation being conducted by the CIA and Napolitano could be exposed. In fact, Napolitano's predecessor as Homeland Security Secretary, Michael Chertoff, who still advises his old department, has defended the head of the Justice Department's Criminal Division, Lanny Breuer, over charges that Breuer has covered up Fast and Furious details.

Jared Lee Loughner
WMR has been told that in 2009, information about the CIA/Homeland Security/Napolitano smuggling operation came to the attention of three individuals, two members of Congress and a federal judge. The three were Arizona Democratic Representatives Giffords, Republican Representative Mike Conaway from west Texas, and Judge Roll. Giffords and Roll were working together on investigating the extent of the clandestine weapons and druigs smuggling operation and held some joint meetings with informants, one in north Phoenix, in 2009. Information on the investigation and informants was strictly limited to only a few trusted staffers and clerks for Giffords and Roll. In addition, Conaway was also being briefed by informants on the smuggling operation but since the death of Roll and the severe mental and physical incapacitation of Giffords from the shooting carried out by Jared Lee Loughner, said to be an MK-ULTRA-like trained assassin, he has gone silent in fear for his own safety. Loughner's was declared mentally incompetent and there are reports, including one in Slate Magazine, that the U.S. Medical Center for Federal Prisoners in Springfield, Missouri, where Loughner is being held, pending a determination of his mental fitness to stand trial, is being administered psychotropic drugs in his Kool Aid.

Jim Jones' Cool-Aid tub, Guyana
In addition to receiving drugs to fund its off-the-books operations, the CIA weapons smuggling program is designed to arm the two main Mexican cartels -- Sinaloa and Los Zetas -- in order to destabilize Mexico. A violence-ridden Mexico makes it more dependent on U.S. military aid and, eventually, the country is seen by Washington as a future virtual U.S. protectorate, whose state PEMEX-controlled oil reserves will be available to U.S. oil companies.

Iran must chose between a bomb or survival: Israel

Israel determined to commit suicide along with madman Netanyahu; Obama going to defend Israel to very last U.S. soldier

Agency France-Presse
12/12/2011

A senior Israeli cabinet minister on Monday said Iran must be forced to face an existential question over its nuclear drive: choose between getting an atomic bomb, or survival.

"We believe that in order to stop the Iranian military nuclear project, the regime in Tehran should face a dilemma -- whether to have a bomb or to survive," Strategic Affairs Minister Moshe Yaalon told reporters in Jerusalem.
Madmen:  Netanyahu and Obama
Yaalon said however it was for the international community, rather than Israel, to apply what he called an "achievable" policy.

"We prefer that the international community led by the United States will bring about this dilemma in order to convince the regime to give up its military nuclear programme," he said, stressing the need for political isolation and economic sanctions aimed at the banking and oil sectors.

Israel and much of the international community fear that Iran's nuclear programme masks a drive for a weapons capability.

Tehran denies any such ambition and says the programme is for peaceful civilian energy and medical purposes only.

"Our policy is very clear -- by one way or another, the military nuclear project in Iran should be stopped," Yaalon said, indicating it "might be 12 months, might be 24 months" until Iran was able to reach a military nuclear capability.

Israel has pushed Washington and the European Union for tough sanctions against Tehran, but has repeatedly warned it would not allow Iran to obtain nuclear weapons.

Yaalon, a member of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's inner circle of eight ministers, also reiterated the line that while a military option was still on the table, as "the last resort."

He declined to comment on what was behind a deadly explosion at a Iranian military base near Tehran last month, which a top Israeli intelligence official reportedly said was a site where ground-to-ground missiles were being developed.

"They had some blow to the missiles project in the last incident in which a missile site absorbed a significant blow -- especially regarding long-range missiles," Yaalon said.

Media reports have suggested the blast was part of a covert effort by the United States, Israel and other states to disable Iran's nuclear and missile programmes.

Last month, the UN's International Atomic Energy Agency said it had "credible" information Iran was carrying out "activities relevant to the development of a nuclear explosive device."

Iraq: A war of muddled goals, painful sacrifice

American military families need to come to grips with fact that the illegal Iraq and Afghanistan wars were complete failures and their loved ones died for absolutely nothing

Associated Press
By Robert Reid
12/11/2011

BAGHDAD —

In the beginning, it all looked simple: topple Saddam Hussein, destroy his purported weapons of mass destruction and lay the foundation for a pro-Western government in the heart of the Arab world.

Nearly 4,500 American and more than 100,000 Iraqi lives later, the objective now is simply to get out — and leave behind a country where democracy has at least a chance, where Iran does not dominate and where conditions may not be good but "good enough."

Americans must accept responsibility for dead from both "wars"
Even those modest goals may prove too ambitious after American forces leave and Iraq begins to chart its own course. How the Iraqis fare in the coming years will determine how history judges a war which became among the most politically contentious in American history.

Toppling Saddam was the easy part. Television images from the days following the March 20, 2003, start of the war made the conflict look relatively painless, like a certain type of Hollywood movie: American tanks speeding across the bleak and featureless Iraqi plains, huge blasts rattling Baghdad in the "shock and awe" bombing and the statue of the dictator tumbling down from his pedestal.

But Americans soon collided with the complex realities of an alien society few of them knew or understood. Who were the real power brokers? This ayatollah or that Sunni chief? What were the right buttons to push? America had its own ideas of the new Iraq. Did most Iraqis share them?

Places most Americans had never heard of in 2002, like Fallujah and Abu Ghraib, became household words. Saddam was captured nine months after the invasion. The war dragged on for eight more years. No WMD were ever found. And Iraq drained billions from America's treasury and diverted resources from Afghanistan, where the Taliban and al-Qaida rebounded after their defeat in the 2001 invasion.

Bush and Cheney's Abu Grahib
In the early months, America's enemy was mostly Sunnis angry over the loss of power and prestige when their patron Saddam fell. In September 2007, the bloodiest year for U.S. troops, Shiite militias — part of a community that suffered terribly under Saddam — were responsible for three-quarters of the attacks in the Baghdad area that killed or wounded Americans, according to the then-No. 2 U.S. commander in Iraq, Lt. Gen. Ray Odierno.

Saddam had not tolerated al-Qaida. With Saddam gone and the country in chaos, al-Qaida in Iraq became the terror movement's largest and most dangerous franchise, drawing in fighters from North Africa to Asia for a war that lingers on through suicide bombings and assassinations, albeit at a lower intensity.

As American troops prepare to go home by Dec. 31, they leave behind a country still facing violence, with closer ties to the U.S. than Saddam had but still short of what Washington once envisioned. Iranian influence is on the rise. One of the few positive developments from the American viewpoint — a democratic toehold — is far from secure.

Bush/Rove hoaxes:  Pat Tillman and Jessca Lynch dishonored
In 20-20 hindsight, the U.S. probably should have seen it coming. By 2003, communal rivalries and hatreds, fueled by years of Saddam's suppression of Kurds and Shiites, were brewing beneath the lid of a closed society cobbled together from the wreckage of the Ottoman Empire after World War I. Saddam's rule of terror kept all these passions in the pot. Lift the lid and the pot boils over. Remove Saddam and a new fight flares for the power that the ousted ruler and his Baath Party had monopolized for decades.

A day after Saddam's statue was hauled down in Baghdad, the U.S. arranged what was supposed to be a reconciliation meeting in the Shiite holy city of Najaf, bringing together prominent clerics from the majority Shiite sect eager for a dominant role in Iraq after the collapse of Saddam's Sunni-dominated rule.

War Criminal Donald Rumsfeld:  Trying to hide in plain sight
One of them was Abdul-Majid al-Khoie, son of a revered ayatollah. Al-Khoie had fled to Britain during Saddam's crackdown against Shiites after the 1991 Gulf War. Now he and the other clerics were back in Iraq, freed from Saddam's yoke.

As al-Khoie approached a mosque, a crowd swarmed around him. He was hacked to death in an attack widely blamed on Muqtada al-Sadr, a fellow Shiite cleric.

In Baghdad, meanwhile, mobs looted and burned much of the city as bewildered U.S. soldiers stood by.

"Stuff happens," then-U.S. Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld famously said at the time. "And it's untidy, and freedom's untidy, and free people are free to make mistakes, and commit crimes and do bad things. They're also free to live their lives and do wonderful things. And that's what's going to happen here."

Within months, angry Sunnis had taken up arms to resist what they saw as a Shiite takeover on the coattails of the Americans. Their ranks were bolstered by former soldiers whose livelihood was taken away when the Americans, in a bid to appease Shiite and Kurdish leaders, abolished Saddam's military.

Runsfeld:  "Stuff happens"
In August 2003, a massive truck bomb devastated the U.N. headquarters, killing the chief of mission, his deputy and 20 other people. Two months later, rockets slammed into the U.S.-occupied Rasheed Hotel in the Green Zone, killing an American lieutenant colonel and wounding 17 people. One of the architects of the war, visiting Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz, barely escaped injury.

By then it was clear: America was in for a long and brutal fight. The triumphant scene of Saddam's statue falling would be replaced by new iconic images: the bodies of butchered Americans hanging from a bridge in Fallujah, military vehicles engulfed in flames, terrified hostages staring into a video camera moments before decapitation, and flag-draped caskets resting at open graves as aging parents and young widows wept for their loved ones.
