America’s Shambles in Afghanistan

The price paid by Pakistan:  Thousands of dead civilians; militias out of control; former "friend" United States breathing down it's neck and threatening obliquely to invade

By Brian Cloughley

In the course of research for a paper on US-Pakistan relations I came across a speech given by President Obama in March this year, titled  ‘A New Strategy for Afghanistan and Pakistan.'  It was interesting and quite informative, if misguided and engagingly ingenuous, but the riveting sentence that leapt from the page to my astonished eyes was the declaration that  “The United States of America did not choose to fight a war in Afghanistan.”

It’s a bit like being told  “Hitler didn’t cause World War Two”, or reading a newspaper headline like  “Republican Politician Tells Truth” or “Netanyahu Says Arabs are Human”  But the Obama assertion was even more bizarre.

War Criminals:  Blair and Bush
Nobody grabbed America’s collective nose and ordered it to send special forces to go to Afghanistan’s Tora Bora region on 7 October 2001, along with a few dozen British colleagues and a now-rich bunch of raggy baggy Afghan warlords who took millions of CIA dollars in enormous shrink-wrapped bundles and then sat down on their money and did nothing – until they sent the cash to Dubai and Geneva, courtesy of the corrupt Kabul Bank. The prime mover in that farce (for such it was, alas, in spite of instances of exceptionally courageous conduct by US and British soldiers;  I have had a first-hand description of the operation, but alas can’t recount it because of the UK’s Official Secrets Act), was the White House.  The pathetic Blair of Britain followed in his usual fashion, desperate to have bonding photographs taken alongside the grinning Bush.

It was most certainly the United States of America that chose to invade Afghanistan.  And it was the United States that manipulated the United Nations Security Council into a Resolution that seemed to give justification for its unwinnable war.

Two researchers in the British House of Commons have produced a paper titled ‘The Legal Basis for the Invasion of Afghanistan’.  These analysts are not bleeding-heart liberals;  they are intelligent, independent assessors of fact. And they wrote :  “The military campaign in Afghanistan was not specifically mandated by the UN – there was no specific Security Council Resolution authorising the invasion – but was widely (although not universally) perceived to be a legitimate form of self-defence under the UN Charter.”

The whole thing was a con-job. And dozens of nations were summoned to give it a slimy veneer of quasi-legitimacy.  They were all duped – or chose to be manoeuvred – into committing blood, young lives and treasure to the preposterously named “Operation Enduring Freedom.”

Soldier with Afghan "terrorist"
While writing this piece I went to the website icasualties and saw that yet more young foreign soldiers had been killed.  Boys of 19 and 20 are dying in Afghanistan for . . .   for what?   There are no names of Afghan soldiers, of course, because they don’t matter to the West – any more than the deaths of Pakistani soldiers matter to Western politicians and generals who demand that “Pakistan must do more to combat terrorism.”  What they mean is that even more soldiers of the Pakistan army and Frontier Corps should sacrifice their lives in order to make things easier for the West to claim that things are improving in its Afghan catastrophe.

Had there been no invasion of Afghanistan by foreign troops, Pakistan would not be in the dreadful situation in which it now finds itself. The fanatics came over the border and found sanctuary amid the lawless, savage, but culturally hospitable Pushtun tribes, which at that very time were being encouraged, with signs of modest success, to join mainstream Pakistan.  But the displaced militants began energetic campaigns of propaganda and hatred, and then wreaked havoc by brainwashing home-grown barbarians to develop their own brand of evil mayhem.

Pakistan had no suicide bombings until 1995 when an Egyptian citizen tried to drive a bomb-truck into his embassy in Islamabad. There were no other attacks until 2005, when there were two, by sectarian religious fanatics. But then the foreigners’ war in Afghanistan really got going, and in 2007 there were over fifty suicide attacks in Pakistan,  most of which directly targeted military forces. Since then it’s been a hideous growth industry.  Last year fifty bombings killed over 1100 people, and so far this year the score is 500 dead innocents.

Pakistan suicide bombing casualty
Thank you, Operation Enduring Freedom. And thank you, too, America, for the deaths of over 3,000 soldiers of the Pakistan army and Frontier Corps, because none of them would have been killed were it not for your war in Afghanistan.

Kabul’s US-endorsed and fraudulently elected government and its supporting foreign military forces whine about Pakistan being unable to control movement of militants to and from Afghanistan, and certainly it is impossible to do this – as the US well knows but won’t admit.  Across its own fenced and heavily patrolled  border with Mexico, which costs an annual 6 billion dollars to maintain and has over 20,000 border agents, pass hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants and thousands of tons of drugs every year.

Ignoring its own backyard cross-border shambles, the US demands that Pakistan commit its soldiers to invade its border Tribal Agency, North Waziristan to fight militants who – undoubtedly – cross the border to Afghanistan to fight there.

This operation – or, rather, long series of operations, because it would take years if mounted,  would require some 60,000 soldiers, of whom a thousand would be killed in a two-year campaign – were that all the time it would take. There would be at least 3,000 Pakistan army and Frontier Corps soldiers wounded, with hundreds of them maimed for life.  There would be thousands of widows, orphans and grieving parents and families.

Pakistani child being treated for shrapnel wounds
The aim of the US and its dwindling number of international supporters in Afghanistan is not intended to further stability in Pakistan – because a North Waziristan military operation would mightily increase the numbers of suicide and other attacks throughout the country.  Their objective is to make it  easier for them to claim that their war in Afghanistan is going well, as part of President Obama’s ‘New Strategy for Afghanistan and Pakistan.’  Thousands of civilians would have to flee from their homes in Waziristan. The social and economic cost would be immense throughout the country.

Does Pakistan think this is a price worth paying?

The US Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Mullen, stated unequivocally on September 22 that Pakistan’s government and armed forces “use violent extremism as an instrument of policy”,  and were responsible for the recent attack on the US embassy in Kabul, as well as “the 28 June attack against the Inter-Continental Hotel in Kabul and a host of other smaller but effective operations.”

Now Mullen isn’t the sharpest knife in the box, and has made many fatuous statements ever since he got into a position in which he thought that he could get headlines by making fantastic statements;   but even for him, this was a lulu.  He has also declared that the government and intelligence service and army of Pakistan have killed, or want to kill, American citizens. He has announced that Pakistan “jeopardises not only the prospect of our strategic partnership, but also Pakistan’s opportunity to be a respected nation with legitimate regional influence.”

Pakistan tribal area boy and girl
He has utterly destroyed any tiny lingering trust between America and Pakistan.

Then, amazingly, on the one hand he declares that Pakistan is an international pariah and not to be regarded as reliable on any account, and then says “With Pakistan’s help we have disrupted al-Qaeda and its senior leadership in the border regions and degraded its ability to plan and conduct terror attacks”. This is so illogical and off-the-planet as to make one wonder if he had had a bevy of Scotches before he went in to the legislators’ Committee to which he testified.

And I’ll tell Mullen something he doesn’t know:  Yes, Pakistan’s intelligence agency does have liaison with extremists.  The Directorate of Inter Services Intelligence maintains contact with all sorts of loony, barbaric and evil organisations.  Just as does the CIA.  It does so, because it knows the people of these groups are ruthless, powerful and extremely dangerous and it wants to have a handle on what they do, and, if possible, engage them in negotiations on behalf of government.  Just like the CIA did with, for example, Libya’s lunatic and murderous Gadaffi.

Pakistan war casualty
Mullen’s wacky pronouncements have pushed US credibility in Pakistan to an even further low, which might have been expected, given what his boss, defence secretary Panetta, has been spouting.

The US is threatening to invade Pakistan rather than endorse ongoing and extremely delicate negotiations with tribal and other fanatics in its western regions.  The intention was made clear when Panetta, referring to Pakistan’s supposed support of militant operations in Afghanistan, declared that “We’re not going to allow these types of attacks to go on.”

I’ve got news for Mullen and Panetta.  If they imagine the Pakistan Army will be a pushover like the Iraqis, they have another think coming.  If US forces attempt an incursion into Pakistan in North Waziristan or anywhere else they will meet reaction not only from the tribes and militants but from a proud and professional army which will not accept flagrant violation of national sovereignty. I know the Pakistan Army, and I state flatly that man-for-man it will hammer any opponent, no matter if the skies are horizon-filled with US bombers.

Does America think this is a price worth paying?

Japan Rice Crop Tests find huge amounts of radation far beyond already inflated government safety standards

Lying Japanese government now attempting to limit public access to radiation measuring Geiger counters; Japan puts money before international public safety, continues to export rice

By Chikako Mogi

Japan found the first case of rice with radioactive materials far exceeding a government-set level for a preliminary test of pre-harvested crop, requiring thorough inspection of the rice to be harvested from the region, the farm ministry said late on Friday.

The ministry said radioactive cesium of 500 becquerels per kg was found in a sample of the pre-harvested rice in Nihonmatsu city, in Fukushima Prefecture, 56 km (35 miles) west of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant which was crippled by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, triggering the world's worst nuclear disaster in 25 years.

Destroyed, melted down reactor at Fukushima

The ministry said the Fukushima Prefecture will expand the inspection spots nearly ten-fold to around 300 areas.
It is the first case in Japan of rice containing radioactive cesium exceeding 200 becquerels per kg, a level which requires further thorough testing of the area for the harvested rice.

The government introduced inspection guidelines in August, with preliminary tests followed by more before approving shipment.

So far, no rice crop has been banned for shipments.

If preliminary tests found rice to contain radioactive cesium levels of 200 becquerels per kg or more, the crop will be tested more thoroughly before approvals are made for shipments.

If the level of cesium in rice exceeded the government-imposed cap of 500 becquerels per kg, shipments from locally produced rice will be halted.

If the follow-up tests of rice harvested from Nihonmatsu city find radioactive materials exceeding the government-imposed cap, it would deal a huge blow to Japan.

The country has been struggling to regain public trust in the safety of nuclear power so it can resume operations of nuclear reactors to supply energy as well as food safety after wide-ranging products from water to vegetables were found with radiation contamination.

Fukushima Fallout in California Waters

ABC News

The radioactive fallout from Japan’s Fukushima nuclear plant accident has spread as far as California waters, according to scientists from the University of California, Berkeley.

But although the level of radioactivity in the water was higher than normal, they said, it was still very low and not harmful to humans.*

“The levels of fallout we have observed in San Francisco Bay area rain water pose[d] no health risk to the public,” wrote the study authors, led by Eric B. Norman of UC Berkeley’s Department of Nuclear Engineering.

Children are especially vulnerable to radioactive iodine
The March earthquake and tsunami that rocked Japan compromised the nuclear plant, causing radioactive material to run into the surrounding waters.  Researchers subsequently found some of that same material in rainwater collected from the San Francisco Bay area.

Samples gathered between March 16 and March 26 showed abnormally high levels of radioactive elements.

The levels were highest in samples collected on March 24, but after that the levels returned to normal.

“The levels in the rain water went down very quickly,” said Dr. Nagy Elsayyad, assistant professor of radiation oncology at the University of Miami’s Miller School of Medicine.  “Even the water with the highest levels would be safe. It’s impossible to ingest the amount of water it would take for the radioactivity to be harmful.”

Additionally, he said, people don’t generally drink rain water.

Scientists also found radioactive material in samples of weeds, vegetables and milk sold in the area, but those levels were also very low.

While people have no reason to fear these findings, Elsayyad understands why people worry when they hear about elevated levels of radiation.   The health effects of being exposed to radiation can be very serious, and include organ damage and cancer.

“It’s deeply ingrained in our culture that radiation is harmful,” he said.  ”I wouldn’t blame people for being worried, but it’s important to make it clear that these results show the water is safe.”

* There is no safe level of radiation.  With both Japanese and U.S. governments continuing to lie and cover-up the lethal amounts of radiation spewing from the destroyed Fukushima reactors, it is now up to the public to protect itself.  The "scientists" that are supposed to serve mankind are now complicit in the cover-up, going as far as to now use a previously unknown measurement for the leaking radiation called "milliseverts" instead of the industry standard rems.  This is to confuse and downplay the catastrophe and give the international public the impression of lower numbers.  These "scientists," and all government officials who have lied to the public need to be burned at the stake in front of the destroyed reactors.  The Japanese and U.S. governments do not fear panic in the population - as that would serve their purposes - they fear being violently deposed after the public finds out the extent of the radiation they and their children are being needlessly exposed to.  All in the name of greed by satanic corporatists and the corrupt, evil governments of Japan and the US. who originally sold these infernal plants to the public by claiming that "electricity from nuclear plants will be too cheap to meter."  The international public also bears some responsibility for this, as they allowed these plants to be constructed in the first place.

While world leaders party with looted funds, the world prays for an economic miracle

The only "crisis" is how to spend looted money

The Independent
By Ben Chu

After an incredibly volatile day on world markets, the head of the International Monetary Fund, Christine Lagarde, warned of a looming "collapse in global demand" which threatens to push economies around the world into a new recession.

"Dark clouds over Europe and huge uncertainty in the United States" mean that "the challenge could not be more urgent", she told politicians and leading economists in Washington, who are meeting there in an attempt to tackle the world's economic woes.

Lagarde:  Destroyer of Third World countries
Calling for immediate action to support global growth and stabilise the international financial sector, Ms Lagarde said: "The actions I am calling for today are not for the coming years – they are for the coming months."

The stark warning followed the failure of the G20 group of leading economies to convince investors that they would avert a new global banking crisis. A communiqué from G20 finance ministers and central bank governors pledging to "take all necessary action to preserve the stability of banking systems and financial markets" failed to deliver a significant lift to investor sentiment. Stock markets in Europe and the US picked up slightly by the close of trading yesterday, but generally failed to recover the large losses experienced earlier in the week.

The Chancellor, George Osborne, who is in Washington for the IMF summit, attempted to ratchet up the pressure on his European counterparts, warning that they had six weeks to agree on radical measures to address the eurozone sovereign debt crisis before the next G20 meeting in November in Cannes. "There is now a quite clear deadline set which is the Cannes summit," he said. "The eurozone has six weeks to resolve this political crisis." The Chancellor claimed that European finance ministers are finally waking up to the fact that they must act faster to resolve the Continental debt crisis, saying that the "leading lights of the eurozone are aware of the fact that time [is] running out for them".

The G20 communiqué had sought to reassure financial markets that prompt action would be taken to ensure that all banks have sufficient capital buffers to absorb any economic shocks.

It said: "We will ensure that banks are adequately capitalised and have sufficient access to funding to deal with current risks."

But no new plan to inject capital into the Continent's fragile financial sector was announced. The IMF claimed this week that there is a potential €200bn-hole in the balance sheets of European banks as a consequence of strains in the European sovereign debt market.

On  Iran's Ahmadinejad:  "It's ... this ... big ...
And Ms Lagarde repeated her call for European leaders to act quickly to strengthen the balance sheets of their banks. A move by the credit rating agency Moody's to further downgrade eight Greek banks underlined the stresses in the Continent's financial sector.

The G20 communiqué also promised that the powers of the eurozone's emergency stabilisation fund, the EFSF, will be significantly boosted by the time of the Cannes meeting, enabling it to recapitalise banks and increase emergency lending to troubled states.

But that is dependent on national parliaments sanctioning an increase in the EFSF's powers. The German Bundestag will vote on the measures on 29 September. The German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, is facing problems convincing her Christian Democrat Party and her coalition partners, the Free Democrats, to back the legislation.

Despite instructing European leaders to take radical action in the face of the looming economic emergency, Mr Osborne refused to budge from his own radical deficit-reduction strategy. The Chancellor rejected claims he is contributing to the deficiency of global demand with his determination to wipe out the bulk of the UK's budget deficit by the end of this parliament. "This is a debt crisis. You can't separate debt and demand," he said. "They are intricately linked. Unless you deal with debt you can't deal with demand."

The Chancellor also stressed that, despite his opposition to the UK ever joining the single currency, it is in Britain's national interest for the eurozone to survive the present crisis: "I'm very clear that a break-up of the euro is bad for Britain ... It is in Britain's interest that the euro works, that it's stable."

Although Britain is not in the eurozone, the British banking sector is significantly exposed to turmoil in the currency bloc. A stress test of Europe's banks in July by the European Banking Authority showed that the Royal Bank of Scotland, Barclays and HSBC have extended loans amounting to €204bn to governments and companies in troubled eurozone nations.

If the single currency were to collapse, British banks would register large losses on those loans. Despite rising fears about the health of European banks, Mr Osborne yesterday insisted that British banks are perfectly safe: "UK banks are well capitalised and liquid."

Wayne Madsen Report: A depressed president hooked on Google "vanity searches"......

.......when he is not lying and plotting with Clinton, Reid to shut down the government.  "We'll show the repukes this time!"

Wayne Madsen Report
By Wayne Madsen

WMR has learned from government sources with close contacts inside the White House that media reports that The New York Times is developing a story on President Obama suffering from clinical depression are correct and that Obama is fixated on how the media, including certain web sites, view his presidency.

WMR has previously reported on Obama's narcissistic personality and how it has adversely affected his leadership capabilities as president. Obama's day usually begins by his conducting "vanity searches" on Google to see how he is being treated by both the main stream media and political blogs. When he encounters negative articles, Obama flies of the handle in a rage punctuated by the use of foul language, according to sources close to the White House. Obama is reportedly totally obsessed with how the media is covering him.

Obama:  "I wasn't lying... it was ...ahh... pretexting!"
Obama's three major interlocutors between his administration and Democratic Party officials and the Congress -- chief of staff Bill Daley, First Lady Michelle Obama, and political adviser Valerie Jarrett -- have concluded the best current course of action is to keep Obama in the environment he handles best: the campaign trail where he is the focus of adulation by swooning crowds.

WMR has been told by informed sources that when he first read our accounts of his background with the CIA, including his employment with Business International Corporation, and the CIA histories of his mother and grandparents, Obama flew into a rage -- the possible source for three independent reports that indicated that the White House wanted this editor "dead."

Privately, some White House officials have expressed fear to Democratic Party officials and elected Democratic office holders around the nation that Obama is on the verge of a mental breakdown. The White House officials believe that only by putting Obama in front of adoring crowds in a carefully-orchestrated campaign mode can they buy time for the administration. However, the White House sources have expressed grave doubts about Obama's ability to maintain his composure when faced with growing criticism. Their worst fear is that Obama will suffer from a public breakdown, sealing the end of his re-election chances and dooming the down-ticket electoral prospects for the Democratic Party in 2012 and beyond.

"Holder and his damned $16.00 muffins!"
When faced with impeachment during his final months in office, Richard Nixon, who also suffered from depression and was drinking heavily and taking anti-depressants, opted to resign from office in August 1974. Nixon's predecessor, Lyndon Johnson, depressed over the failure of his Vietnam War strategy, opted to forego his re-election campaign in March 1968.

Observers of White House politics have pointed to Daley using the term "I" when he is discussing the administration's policies, an indication that Daley is increasingly calling the shots on major policy issues in the White House. However, Daley's increased profile has resulted in growing friction between him and Jarrett and the First Lady.

Obama is known to search the Internet for stories about himself before he receives the President's Daily Brief from top intelligence officials. Woe be it to any intelligence briefer who reports on information obtained from open sources. Obama, who, in many cases has already read such accounts, will let loose with a barrage of abusive epithets, yelling, at times, "I already know that you stupid motherfucker!"

Caught spanking Boner's monkey
Ron Suskind's new book, "Confidence Men," which mainly concerns the dysfunctional nature of the Obama White House, has resulted in a full-court press being directed by the White House and its spin doctors against the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist.

When asked whether one or more over-zealous White House aides may have taken Obama's rage at this editor for the reports about the CIA backgrounds of Obama and his family as a  reason to convey a personal threat, the answer was that, given the current nature of the White House staff, such a scenario was more than likely. We have also been told that Obama was well-aware of this editor's recent foray into Indonesia in search of details about his and his family's time in that country.
