After a “day of rage” on Friday that saw over 5,000 protesters march through Wall Street, only to be rebuffed by a police barricade, organizers say their struggle has only just begun

Not going anywhere:  Wall Street  protesters
Presently encamped one block from the Federal Reserve are several hundred protesters, in a tent city that’s sprung up in a park on Liberty Street they’ve renamed “Liberty Plaza” (otherwise known as Zuccotti Park). They’re holding camp in an effort to inspire others to join them, borrowing their tactics from Egyptians who camped in Tahrir Square.

The video below is from Saturday, the second day of the protest, and features a speech by the activist actor Rev. Billy, who promotes moralistic capitalism and fair trade issues.

Blair paid secret visits to Gaddafi

Blair and good friend Gaddafi had many secret meetings in past

Agency France-Presse
09/19/2011

Former prime minister Tony Blair made two private trips to see Moamer Kadhafi in the run-up to the release of the Lockerbie bomber, The Sunday Telegraph revealed.

Blair, who left office in June 2007, used a Libyan regime jet to visit Kadhafi in June 2008 and April 2009, the broadsheet said, citing documents discovered in Tripoli since Kadhafi was ousted from power.

Blair played a major role in trying to bring Kadhafi in from the cold in exchange for giving up his nuclear weapons programme and first visited him in March 2004 in what was dubbed the "deal in the desert".

In good company:  War Criminals Blair and Gaddafi
A spokesman for Blair acknowledged that the visits took place and that the Libyans had raised the issue of Abdelbaset Ali Mohmet al-Megrahi but the former premier simply told them that it was a matter for the Scottish authorities.

Megrahi is the only man convicted over the December 1988 bombing of Pan Am flight 103, which killed 270 people, mostly Americans, when it exploded over the Scottish town of Lockerbie.

Megrahi, who has terminal cancer, was said to be only three months from death when he was freed from a Scottish jail on compassionate grounds on August 20, 2009.

The Telegraph disclosure is likely to add to pressure for Blair to make public the full extent of his dealings with Kadhafi since leaving Downing Street.

The Sunday paper said that the documents showed that in both 2008 and 2009, Blair negotiated to fly to Tripoli from Sierra Leone in a jet provided by Kadhafi.

The documents also showed that Blair had a further private meeting with Kadhafi in June 2010.

The Sunday Telegraph said the visits raised concerns of possible conflicts of interest between Blair's roles as a Middle East peace envoy, a business consultant and a philanthropist.

Fooling only themselves:  Blair and Gaddafi
A spokesman for the ex-premier said: "Tony Blair has never had any role, either formal or informal, paid or unpaid, with the Libyan Investment Authority or the government of Libya and he has no commercial relationship with any Libyan company or entity.

"The subjects of the conversations during Mr Blair's occasional visits was primarily Africa, as Libya was for a time head of the African Union; but also the Middle East and how Libya should reform and open up.

"Of course the Libyans, as they always did, raised Megrahi. Mr Blair explained, as he always did, in office and out of it, that it was not a decision for the UK government but for the Scottish executive.

Faker?  Abdelbaset Ali Mohmet al-Megrahi
"No business deals of any nature were discussed. At the time, governments around the world were engaging with Libya. Kadhafi was received in several European capitals including Brussels, Rome and Paris.

"There was therefore at that time no reason whatsoever for not continuing to engage with him, especially since Mr Blair in office had been responsible for getting Kadhafi to give up his chemical and nuclear weapons programme and renounce terrorism."

A review released in February found that the British government did "all it could" to help Libya in pursuing Megrahi's freedom, fearing that "UK interests would be damaged" otherwise.

Only in America: PETA (People for ethical treatment of animals) launches porn site

PETA shows true colors, launches deviant porn site, exploits women

By Ray Sanchez

NEW YORK (Reuters) -
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, no stranger to attention-grabbing campaigns featuring nude women, plans to launch a pornography website in the name of animal rights.

The nonprofit organization, whose controversial campaigns draw criticism from women's rights groups, said it hopes to raise awareness of veganism through a mix of pornography and graphic footage of animal suffering.

Moo:  PETA - over the top porno terrorists
"We're hoping to reach a whole new audience of people, some of whom will be shocked by graphic images that maybe they didn't anticipate seeing when they went to the PETA triple-X site," said Lindsay Rajt, PETA's associate director of campaigns.

PETA has been accused of campaigning for animal rights at the cost of exploiting women. A Facebook group, Real Women Against PETA, was launched after the organization paid for a billboard showing an obese woman with the message: "Save the Whales. Lose the Blubber. Go Vegetarian."

Another critical Facebook group is called, "Vegans (and Vegetarians) Against PETA."

"PETA is extremely disingenuous," said Jennifer Pozner, executive director of the New York-based advocacy group Women In Media & News. "They have consistently used active sexism as their marketing strategy to garner attention. Their use of sexism has gotten more extreme and more degrading.

"This may be in their minds the only thing left at their disposal to lower the bar," she said.

PETA has filed paperwork to launch its pornography site when the controversial new .xxx domain becomes active in early December. While many nonprofits and corporations are scrambling to protect their website names from being hijacked by a pornographer slapping on a .xxx domain, PETA is embracing the new domain as just another way to conduct business.

PETA uses "shock ads" to disgust, outrage
"We try to use every outlet that we can to speak up for animals," Rajt said. "We anticipated that this new triple-X domain name would be a hot topic and we immediately decided to use it and take advantage of it to try to promote the animal rights message."

Jill Dolan, director of the program in gender and sexuality studies at Princeton University, was critical of the PETA campaigns.

"Exploiting porn to get people's juices going seems lame; exploiting pornographic images only of women to make their point is retrograde and misogynist," Dolan said in an email. "Come on, PETA. Don't be Neanderthals."

Rajt denied that PETA has been insensitive to women.

"Our demonstrators, the models, all chose to participate in our campaigns... It's not a very feminist thing to do to turn to women and tell them whether or not they can use their voices, their bodies to express their voice."

Visitors to the X-rated site will initially be presented with pornographic content as well as images from PETA's salacious ads and campaigns, Rajt said. Those images will be followed by pictures and video shot undercover of the mistreatment of animals. The site will also include links to vegetarian and vegan -- using no animal products -- starter kits as well as recipes.

ZERO decency:   PETA degrades women, knows no limits
PETA's ad campaigns have featured adult film stars Sasha Grey, Ron Jeremy and Jenna Jameson. In 2008, the organization's YouTube account was temporarily shut down after showing racy videos of celebrities and others posing nude.

"When people first visit the site, it will be very enticing and once they go just a little bit deeper, that's when they'll be confronted with images that we hope will make them stop and think and get them talking and hopefully encourage them to make a lifestyle change to a plant-based diet," Rajt said.

Indonesian women protest daylight rape in Jakarta

Jakarta protesters angered at recent comments regarding rape incident, wear miniskirts to emphasize rights

Jakarta women gathered downtown today wearing miniskirts to protest the recent rape of a woman here in broad daylight and the remarks made in the aftermath.

The incident sparked outrage and concern that there was a failure of the authorities to aggressively pursue charges against the rapists. The attack was especially brazen as it was carried out in daylight in crowded downtown Jakarta.

Indonesian women demand justice
On Friday Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo addressed women and asked them to avoid wearing  miniskirts when riding on public transport in the capital following the sexual assault of a 27-year-old woman who was attacked in a public minivan early this month.

In a statement protest coordinator Chika Noya said  "We are here to express our anger. Instead of giving heavy punishment to the rapists, the governor blamed it on women's dress. This is discrimination," she said, adding that Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo's remarks regarding the incident were unrealistic and unhelpful.

In the subsequent years following the 1997 revolution during which President Suharto was forced from power, Indonesian women have enjoyed increasing freedom and gained hard-won rights for their efforts to bring about equality between the sexes.  They have been largely successful in their efforts and continue to vigorously protest inequities when they arise.

The women demonstrated at the main roundabout in the capital wearing short skirts and low-cut blouses, some holding a big banner saying:  "My miniskirt is my right," and "Don't tell us how to dress, tell them not to rape."  Passersby were overwhelmingly supportive.  "What happened to the victim should never be allowed to go unpunished in civilized society" said Uli, who attended the protest in order to support the women and voice her opinion on the crime.  "The rapists should be caught and punished severely according to the law," she added.

Mini-skirt clad protester Dhyta Caturani said the protest was inspired by the "SlutWalk" demonstrations that had their origins in April in Toronto, Canada when women and men took to the streets by the hundreds to protest a crack made by a Toronto police constable that "women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimized."  "The way women dress is not cause for or excuse for rape.  Sexual violence against women in Indonesia is unacceptable in our democracy," Caturani told The 5th Estate.

Jakarta police are now dealing with an increase in recorded rape cases, logging 41 for this year up to September in this city of 12 million, an increase from the 40 rapes and sexual assaults reported during the whole of 2010.

On Saturday Governor Bowo apologized for his statements.

"Violent protests" over China pollution

In odd reversal, solar power comes up dirty

BEIJING —

Hundreds of Chinese have mounted violent protests against a solar panel factory in eastern China over three days, accusing it of cancer-causing pollution, state media reported Sunday.

China's price for high-speed progress:  massive, killing pollution
Around 500 protesters gathered in Haining city, Zhejiang province, on Thursday, demanding an explanations for the death of large numbers of fish in a nearby river, the Xinhua news agency said. The contamination had caused at least 31 cases of cancer among residents of Hongxiao village, which is part of Haining, they said, including six of leukaemia.

The demonstrators broke into the Jinko Solar factory, ransacking offices and overturning vehicles before being forced back by police, Xinhua said, adding that the violence continued on Friday and Saturday evenings.

Since April industrial waste from the plant has exceeded legal limits on pollutants, Xinhua quoted Chen Hongming, deputy head of the Haining office of environmental affairs as saying.

Jinko Solar, which is listed on the New York Stock Exchange, has more than 10,000 employees in plants located in Jiangxi and Zhejiang provinces, according to its website.

Despite draconian crackdowns, Chinese people protest
There was no comment on the website Sunday about the protests or the demonstrators' allegations. Calls to the plant by AFP went unanswered.

Local authorities and police declined to comment when contacted by AFP.

The protests follow a number of a violent demonstrations in China, especially in the southern province of Guangdong, where tens of millions of migrant workers toil in the "workshop of the world."

Industrial pollution has caused unrest in China before. Authorities in the northeastern city of Dalian recently agreed to move a chemical plant after protests from local residents.
